Plus, the wines to avoid!

By Lourdes Avila Uribe

For those of us who identify as wine snobs, it can be difficult to stay the course when a diet restricts alcohol consumption. And lets be honest, most diets and healthy lifestyles require that alcohol intake be moderate, at the very leastfair enough! I know that once I get a glass or two in me, the second plate of french fries seems eminently reasonable. But if youve ever been curious about the keto diet;, youll be happy to know that it is possible to enjoy your nightly glass of vino thanks to a few delicious keto wine brands.

Have you ever tried the ketogenic diet? For the diet-averse such as myself, it is an appealing option. Its a low-carb, high-fat diet that puts the body in a state of ketosis, which burns fat for energy at a high level of efficiency. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which supplies energy to the brain. The best part? Chocolate, cheese, meat, and even some wines are good to go while on a keto diet. Phew!

But heres the thing, not all wines are keto-friendly. In general, you want to stick with wines that have low or non-existent sugar content, are low in carbohydrates, and have lower alcohol content. In general, that means a drier wine, like those from France, Italy, and Greece. If a wine is sweet, then its probably not keto. Apologies to dessert wine lovers!

Wait Can I Drink Wine On Keto

Well, it depends. Manybut not allwines are keto-friendly. It all comes down to how much residual sugar they contain. Ideally, a keto wine will have zero residual sugar and less than 13.5 percent ABV .

When it comes to finding a wine that fits within the keto diet, your safest bet is to err on the dry side. Wines with high residual sugar content will taste sweet, while dry wines are relatively low-carb. But even wines marketed as dry can contain up to 30 grams per liter of residual sugar, so a true zero-sugar wine is hard to come by. And since the U.S. has no labeling requirements, its all about looking in the right place: Wines from France, Italy and Greece are usually drier, as is anything categorized as bone dry.

Heres the scientific explanation: Researchers theorized the ketonuria was caused by a delayed change in intermediary metabolism from alcohol-induced glycogen depletion.

The bottom line: Drinking alcohol on the keto diet;might result in a quick burst of ketone activity, but your liver will eventually start to use alcohol for energy instead of fat. That means less fat-burning over time.

What Makes A Wine Keto Friendly

Whether or not a wine is keto friendly depends largely on the amount of residual sugar content it contains. Sugar ultimately turns into carbs and therefore ruins the keto diet.

In a perfect keto world, your wine would have no residual sugar, though its almost impossible to achieve this. Therefore, opt for a bone dry wine with just a few grams of residual sugar.

It should also have an alcohol concentration of less than 13 percent.

Unfortunately, American wines are not required to have nutrition labels. Therefore, it can be difficult to deduce what wines are keto friendly. A solution to this problem is to purchase wines from European countries that do require nutrition labels.

Comparison Of Keto Wine To Other Alcoholic Drinks

Wine is preferable for people who undergo a keto diet because it has lower carbs than other alcoholic drinks. Distilled spirits such as gin, rum, whiskey, tequila, and vodka have zero carbohydrates due to the removal of sugar through distillation.

However, most cocktails and mixed drinks that use these spirits are made with syrups, sodas, and high-sugar juices. An example of this is Long Island Iced Tea which has 33 g of carbs per 8.3 ounces due to the combination of lemon juice, cola, and simple syrup.

Another drink that is not ideal for a low-carb diet is beer because it has starch that is high in carbs. A can of beer is about 12 ounces and has more than 12g of carbohydrate content.

Wine coolers also have high carbohydrate content. Smirnoff has about 26g while Breezer has 30g, so you should not consume them on a keto diet.

Keto Friendly Wine is Real: How to Drink Wine on a Keto ...

I decided that I would use the term keto wines only for wines that have 2 grams of residual sugar per liter or less. This way, you can have your glass of wine while using up less than 0.5 carbs. I pretty much went to my local LCBO, which is really small , and grabbed all the wines under $20 and had only 2 grams of sugar. They were all surprisingly delicious! I was expecting them to taste really dry, but many still tasted sweet. As I learned on How Can I Dry Wine Taste Sweet?:

Some;wines;can;taste;sweeter than they really are, with oak, fruit, acidity, and alcohol levels all playing their part in tricking your palate into detecting the presence of residual sugar.

Can I Use Sweeteners In Salad Dressings

Yes, you can! However, the problem with a lot of synthetic sweeteners is that they also draw an insulin response like sugar. I personally stick with naturally-derived sweeteners like erythritol and stevia in my homemade salad dressings.

As Ive talked about on other posts on this site, erythritol is resistant to dissolving in cold liquids. My go-to method for getting around this is to boost its surface area by powdering it in a spice grinder or food processor. If you dont own either or have time for this step, there are powdered varieties available. This is an approach I have used before on this website, such as with my Texas Keto BBQ Sauce.

A quicker and easier way of sweetening your white wine vinaigrette salad dressing is with liquid stevia. It dissolves far more rapidly than powdered erythritol and only requires a few drops. I use liquid stevia glycerite, which lacks a lot of the bitterness of other preparations that people find off-putting.

What About Biodynamic Wines

All biodynamic wines are also lower on sugar content than other wines. A wine can be called biodynamic if its grown according to a specific set of farming practices which are even more stringent than when it comes to organic wine label requirements.

Biodynamic farms use very sustainable practices which leave the land in an excellent shape compared to when they have started to grow wines. This means that chemical fertilizers and pesticides are out of the question and all plants and its animals work in tandem to create a fertile environment which creates an outstanding quality level.

Watch out for biodynamic or dry-farmed wines which is the easiest way to find keto-friendly ones. Mr and Mrs SYLTBAR Sparkling wines proudly show each less than 2 Grams of residual fruit sugar per 750ml bottle which is a fantastic example of extremely keto-friendly wines. And we are very happy that these results have been certified by a very competent and well known Diabetes Institute which is an essential part of the Miami University.

Not all wines are keto-friendly, as many have a high residual sugar content. Some you can enjoy with limitation, some are just no-gos when on a keto diet.
