How To Make Your Own Wine Company

Don't Miss

Apply For Federalapproval Of Your Wine

Make Your Own Wine at Home

Before starting operations, the TTB requires impacted wine businesses to submit various applications with supportive documentation under the terms of the Internal Revenue Service Code and the Federal Alcohol Administration Act . In general, bonded wineries and bonded wine cellars must complete an Application to Establish and Operate Wine Premises. Bonded wineries, bonded wine cellars planning to blend wines, and custom crush wholesalers must also also submit an Application for Basic Permit under the FAA Act.

Your wine business can begin the application process online using the TTB’s Permits Online system. The TTB application process seeks information about your business structure, signatory authority, wine-making premises, wine-making activities, trade name, grape designations, labelling approvals, and any alternating proprietor agreements. As part of the application process, you must provide a Wine Bond to underwrite your payment of federal taxes on your planned wine sales. Your application may also need to include environmental and water quality information to show compliance with applicable laws.

Focusing On The Retail Part

Lastly, if you are purely looking into getting to the wine business, you should consider focusing on the retail part instead. The wine industry has plenty of different opportunities available, not all of them mean you need to become a wine-farmer.

You could start working with a passionate farmer and just be in charge of the branding and retail aspect of creating the winery. You could even consider buying grapes from established farmers and make your own blends. Youd need to get a location for creating the bottling unit and spend money to get the equipment needed, but it might be a good idea if you dont have a passion for farming.

Preparing Supplies And Ingredients

  • 1Gather supplies. In addition to the wine ingredients, you’ll need a few basic supplies to ensure that your wine can age without being affected by bugs or bacteria. Home winemaking shouldn’t be expensive, so it’s not necessary to splurge on special equipment. You will need the following supplies:
  • A 2 gallon crock or glass jar (you can often find these at vintage or secondhand stores, however, be advised that many used crocks may have been used for sauerkraut or pickles and could contaminate your wine.
  • A 1 gallon carboy
  • An airlock

    Create A Strategic Business Plan

    Sooner or later, you will need to start thinking like an entrepreneur as you expand nationally. And just as every entrepreneur prepares a detailed business plan, sketching out tactics and strategy for the next few years, you will also need to come up with a plan for going national. In the best of all worlds, this strategic plan can be a sort of playbook that you share with your co-workers and employees. It might sound trite and conventional, but you really do want everyone to be on the same page when it comes time to launch.

    That being said, there are certain classic growth strategies that have proven effective:

    • The concentric circles strategy

    • The multi-state strategy

    • The anchor accounts strategy

    In this first strategy, the goal is to set your home market as your core and then to build out concentric circles around that core, in order to reach a larger and larger territory. For example, in building out its national brand, Dogfish Head Brewery used concentric circles of 100 miles to keep reaching a larger and larger target audience along the East Coast. In order to move to the next concentric circle, Dogfish Head Brewery first consolidated its gains in each inner circle. This helps to create a strong core.

    Most people who become obsessed with wine eventually end up at least dreaming about making it. Much like home brewing beer, learning how to make wine helps you better appreciate what went into the product inside the bottle. Better yet, maybe youre that one guy or gal that has a crazy idea for a super geeky new wine that youre gonna make using an obscure grape, or you just have the idea for a really cool new red blend brand because you want to compete with The Prisoner and you think this brand has the ability to make tons of money. Theres just one small problem, youve never worked at a hedge fund where you made millions, only to retire early and you werent born into wealth, so you dont exactly have the capital needed to buy that existing winery and the vineyard it sits on. So what do you do?

    You head to a custom crush facility.

    Custom crush facilities have taken off in recent years because they allow anyone with passion and an idea to make wine at scale. So what exactly is a custom crush facility? A custom crush is a bonded winery that allows other wine brands to make wine at their facility, often times even making the wine for you. Youll still have to get your own winery license in order to market and sell your wine, but you can completely avoid the cost of maintaining your own facility, allowing you to instead concentrate on actually selling your wine.

    It allows a retailer to offer its customers a unique and higher-quality wine product at lower cost. An added benefit is that the retailer can promote their own brand, and potential make a higher margin.

    Defining A Target Audience

    Like with any product, it is crucial you do some basic market research and set up a target market for your wine. Ask yourself what type of wine you are making? Is it a dessert wine, a high quality wine for passionate wine enthusiasts, or a cost-friendly wine for average consumer?

    Wine brands even go as far to have the average buyer in mind. Perhaps your wine has the flavor to appeal to foodies or maybe it is for young professionals having a good time. The key is to clearly create the perfect wine for your audience.

    Its Easy To Get Started

    Find a winery partner.

    For the wine, determine the quantity, the type and style, and the bottle and label you want.;

    Cost depends on the quantity, the wine, the bottle size and style and the label. Delivery costs are additional.;

    The winery will craft your wine, bottle and label it and deliver it depending on your needs.;

    Organize Your Portfolio Of Products

    Your brand portfolio of products should be easy to understand and sell. For example, say that you are a winery in Sonoma. You might offer a Pinot Noir, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Zinfandel. And then, for each of these, you might offer a Reserve version priced at a slightly higher price point. That leaves you a relatively simple portfolio of six red wines. Over time, you might add new wines, such as a Chardonnay, in order to appeal to a larger customer base.

    When putting together your portfolio, just be aware that you will probably not use the same portfolio for every market you are trying to enter. For example, if you are a craft brewery, and you are trying to enter a market that is saturated with local craft breweries, you are probably going to need something new or exotic or even crazy in order to break through with local drinkers. The same is true if you are a Washington State winery trying to breakthrough in the nearby California market. What can you offer that California wine drinkers cant already find from local Napa or Sonoma producers?

    Also, keep in mind that, over time, you will need to come up with the timing of new products in order to keep everything fresh in the minds of consumers. For example, the traditional timing involves a core portfolio , a seasonal portfolio , and a limited release portfolio of rare, exceptionally high-quality or just plain unique offerings.

    How to Make Your Own Wine Labels (+ Delicious Winter ...

    Wineries are some of the most romanticized backdrops in history.;

    Who wouldnt enjoy drinking a glass of delicious wine while watching the sunset over a beautiful vineyard?;

    Better yet, what if you owned that winery?

    WHAT WELL COVER:

    Owning a winery can be a wonderful, romantic business. However, that does not mean it is easy. In fact, starting a winery is an incredibly tough field to break into. It takes large investments in time and money and a lot of determination and good work ethic.;

    If you are up for the challenge of opening your own winery, this article will act as a guide in your initial research. Design Your Winerys Building

    By now, its likely youll know how big your vineyard is, so you can start designing the interior and floor plan layout design of your winery, where your wine will be created, stored, sampled, and sold.;

    Consider what you need in your winery, such as equipment and storage space, then consider what you want in your winery.;

    Do you want a fancy tasting room for guests? If so, where? In the retail space? Outside on a patio? In the cellar? All will showcase your hard work, but it depends on the experience you want your tasters to have.;

    Additionally, are you planning to have a retail shop where visitors can buy bottles of wine, glasses, or brand merchandise? If people are visiting your winery and tasting your wine, youll probably want somewhere they can buy the wine they sampled and, likely, enjoyed.;

    Will you serve food with your wine or will it simply be a winery? Crackers and cheese are always a good pairing with wine, but what about full meals? If youre planning to offer food to complement your wine, youll probably need an area specifically for this and likely a kitchen as well!;

    Abide By Relevant State Laws And Regulations

    State laws and regulations may further limit wine-making for both personal consumption and commercial purposes. For example, state laws may determine if your homemade wine may be shared with your house guests, transferred to other locations, or provided in public tastings, exhibits, and competitions. Alternatively, your wine business may operate a home winemakers’ center which provides facilities, material, and advice to the public on wine-making or may make and sell wine-making kits to those wishing to make homemade wine for personal consumption. Although the TTB does not regulate these businesses, they may be subject to state, county, and local laws. Even wine businesses approved by TTB must further comply with relevant laws and licensing requirements. Your wine business may need a general business license to operate locally along with beverage distribution and premises licenses. State laws on cleanliness, health and safety, zoning, and environmental rules may also impact your new wine-making business.

    For further assistance on converting your home wine-making into a commercial enterprise, check out the TTB’s Frequently Asked Questions-Wine or the National Association of American Wineries for legal, policy, and market news on the wine-making industry.

You can, of course, also pick the grape first and then find the suitable location.

    The worlds grape types used in wine are divided into three different species. The most popular one of them is Vitis vinifera, used in nearly 99% of all wines. You might know the grape type from the wines it is used in such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
