But after officially retiring from the sport last year, she’d prefer to be known by her current profession: winemaker. Inspired by a love for Napa Valley, the Wisconsin native purchased a plot of Northern Californian vines back in 2009. In the decade since, she’s quietly been developing her own brand of cabernet sauvignon and rosé under the Somnium label. In stark contrast to her previous gig, viticulture is testing her penchant for slow and steady patience. And Patrick isn’t shy about getting her hands dirty along the way. This isn’t some outsider’s pet project. In fact, she’s grown into something of a fixture in her adopted community. Here she tells Forbes about the long journey from drinking wine to making it.
When did you first develop a love for wine?
Danica Patrick:;I started loving wine when I lived in England. At 15, I left home and moved there for racing. They had a lower drinking age, so as soon as it was legal, I remember going to the bar and asking for a glass of their sweetest white wine. I’m sure it was not very nice. But like any first time drinker, it developed from there. You go from sweet to medium-white, then dry, and then you go to red. I ended up drinking a lot of Chablis and Sancerre because there was a lot more of that over there than there was here.

Danica Patrick is pretty intense. Known as one of the most famous women in racing history, Danica has switched gears and slowed it down in the vineyards of Napa. For the last decade she has developed and produced Somnium; a cabernet sauvignon which is a symbol of her long standing passion for wine.
In 2006 she met her winemaker Aaron Pott, and a year later she was looking at properties in the heart of Napa Valley and eventually settled on Howell Mountain in 2009. Previous to coming home to a new, immaculate wine cellar, Danica Patrick traveled across the globe to Egypt. On Tuesday, the former race car driver shared multiple photos from her amazing journey, including her visit to view one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
