This is not a simple yes or no answer!; If you are new to keto, I do not suggest consuming any alcohol in the beginning.; There are a few reasons for this.
First, when you initially switch to keto, you have to get your body into ketosis.
You want to burn up your glycogen reserves and get your body efficient at burning fat.; This is where you get the most benefit from the Keto Lifestyle in terms of weight loss and increased energy.;
You want your;body being an efficient fat burning machine that produces ketones for your energy, focus, and general AMAZING feelings.
Im sure you are thinking Im sure thats all great, Trina, but what does this have to do with my yummy wine?.; Well, Im glad you asked!; I think we can all agree that alcohol is a toxin.; Sigh; We cant change that!
So, this is the second part about why beginner ketoers want to stay away from alcohol.; What happens when you drink alcohol is that your body;wants to deal with the toxin FIRST.; To put it simply, it takes resources away from burning fat and puts those wonderful resources towards metabolizing the alcohol.;
So, the fat burning can slow and the fat adaptation process may be disrupted.

Warnings About Consuming Alcohol On A Ketogenic Diet
Alcohol shouldnt be consumed heavily or on a consistent basis. There are many negative health benefits, but in the short run dont forget the following when consuming your alcohol:
- Calories. Alcohol still counts as calories and will slow fat loss down. Alcohol is burned as a priority by the body.
- Tolerance. Most people on a ketogenic or low-carb diet experience a much lower tolerance to alcohol than usual. Be careful with consumption.
- Hunger. Many people experience heightened levels of hunger when drinking this can lead to bad decisions or just over-consuming in general.
- Dehydration. Since keto is a natural diuretic, you have to be watchful of how much water youre drinking alongside the alcohol. Try to drink 1 glass per 1 shot and extra water before bed.
- Added sugars. Mixers, liqueurs, and many alcohols will contain some type of flavoring or added sugar. While many companies are publishing nutrition information, you should try to be prepared and research nutrition beforehand.
Weve read a lot of articles that mention drinking light beers and very dry wine to avoid carbohydrates, but dont get out of hand with consumption. Some light beers can contain over 10g net carbs and some dry wine can average over 8g carbs per glass.
Its also important to note that alcohol does contain calories. There is no function in the human body to store the energy in alcohol, so your body will take a preference to metabolize alcohol over fat.
Which Wines Are Keto
Dry wines have little sugar left after fermentation, which is why they don’t taste sweet. These low sugar levels mean they’re low in carbs. Some examples of low-carb wines would be dry sparkling wines or Champagne that are labeled brut,” “extra brut,” “brut nature,” or “zero brut.”;
Meanwhile, sweet wines such as Zinfandel, Moscato, Port, and late-harvest Rieslings have the highest sugar content, so be sure to steer clear of those.;
It’s important to note that just because a wine is fruity doesn’t automatically mean it’s sweet or high in sugar. Dry wine simply means that there are little or no residual sugars. Also, the amount of sugar in wine isn’t directly correlated to its color there are both sweet and dry red wines, white wines, and rosé wines.

Which Wines Have The Least Carbohydrates
In general, dry wines have the lowest carbohydrate content, usually containing only 1-2 grams per drink, making them a perfect wine for keto diets. This is due to the fact that dry wines are fermented for longer, converting more of the grapes sugars into alcohol. In fact, some dry wines are fermented until all of their sugars are converted into alcohol, resulting in a wine that contains no residual sugar and zero carbs.
On the other hand, sweet wines and dessert wines have a higher carb content, such as ports, madeiras, sauternes, and most sherries. This is because the fermentation process is stopped early, leaving more residual sugar in the wine. In some cases winemakers even add sugar to the wine to create a sweeter wine. Avoid sweet or dessert wines if youre on a keto diet.
Sparkling wines can vary widely in carbohydrate content depending on whether they are dry or sweet – opt for dry varieties such as Brut, Extra Brut or Brut Nature over sweeter varieties such as Demi-sec and Doux if youre looking to avoid carbohydrates . Alcohol And Mixers To Avoid On A Ketogenic Diet
Most of us that are on a low-carb, ketogenic diet know that sugar is in just about everything you can find. This also applies to mixers and chasers for alcohol, as well.
- Port/Sherry. These are also known as dessert wines and include all types of port, sherry, and sauternes. They have a very high sugar alcohol, commonly averaging over 13g carbs for just a 3 oz serving. Avoid these where possible.
- Sweet Wines. Much sweeter than dry wines, these are typically enjoyed with dessert and are a bit lighter than port or sherry. These include Moscato, auslese riesling, tokaji, and malvasia wines. They typically have around 11-18g carbs per glass, so you should avoid these.
- Sangria/Margarita Mix. Typically sangria mixes and margarita mixes have over 10g carbs per 1.5 oz serving . Avoid these as much as possible.
- Wine Coolers/Alcopops. The most common of these are Smirnoff ice theyre essentially sugar-laden soda with alcohol in them. You should definitely avoid these.
- Liqueurs. Usually a combination of alcohol and a simple syrup , these are extremely high in carbohydrates. Below, youll find a full list of the most common liqueurs and their respective nutrition information.

Top 5 Keto Alcoholic Drinks
On a keto diet, you can still enjoy a delicious drink or two on special occasions. Even though many alcoholic drinks contain a lot of sugar, there are still some great keto options, with little or no sugar or carbs.

Why Does Keto Lower Alcohol Tolerance

When you are in ketosis, the liver stores very little glycogen, and this causes alcohol to be metabolized a lot faster. Therefore, the alcohol will enter your bloodstream more quickly and your alcohol tolerance will be lower.

Your target should be a wine with a low alcohol content of 13.5% ABV or lower. It should feature a residual sugar measurement thats in the single-digits of grams per liter. Alcohol Changes Your Metabolism
The goal of the keto diet is to stay in ketosis, and that means that you want your metabolism to be working in a very specific manner. Unfortunately, alcohol can interfere with your metabolism in a way thats not conducive to maintaining ketosis.
One of the reasons for this is that alcohol produces a number of byproducts that the body uses before consuming other nutrients. This is why alcohol can produce such a quick burst of energy. Unfortunately, this can also mess up your ketosis.
Some of the byproducts of alcohol metabolism are acetaldehyde, acetate, and phosphatidyl ethanol. These compounds are pretty toxic, and as such, your body targets them to be burned much like it would any other poisons. The most important factor in enjoying keto wines is perhaps the portion. RS and overall carbohydrate content are determined by a 5-ounce glass. Anyone who drinks the bottle will probably get knocked out of ketosis. The second factor is the type of wine. We do know that it can contribute to excess empty calories, poor decision-making, and increased health risks if we arent careful. How Does Alcohol Affect Ketosis

The keto diet also changes how alcohol affects your body. Once you’re in ketosis, your body will have a much lower alcohol tolerance. Why? Because when you consume carbohydrates, it creates a bit of a buffer for your body when breaking down alcohol. But if you remove that cushion by depleting your body’s storage of carbs, alcohol strikes your system faster and stronger.
Even if you’re just having a couple of glasses of wine, your body will process any amount of alcohol much faster, and youll likely feel the effects sooner. You may even end up with a hangover.
