Gluten Free Beer Alcohol And Wine
Whether you like to kick back with a libation once in awhile, like to bake with alcohol as an ingredient or just want to be sure you have safe options for your gluten free friends, its good to know the facts about gluten free beer, gluten free alcohol, gluten free liquor, gluten free wine and gluten free ciders.
Gluten free beer is relatively new in our world , but many other alcohols and wines have been gluten free all along.;Nonetheless, there remains a lot of confusion surrounding gluten removed versus naturally gluten free beers, and myths perpetuate about gluten in wine and gluten in alcohol.

Gluten In Wooden Casks
The culprit for trace gluten found in wine can often be found in the wheat paste used to seal the wooden wine casks or barrels used to age the wine. While not all winemakers age their vintages in oak casks or barrels , not all modern winemakers seal their oak barrels with a flour paste, either.
However, if you react to a wine that has been aged in an oak cask or barrel, it’s possible you are having a reaction to the flour paste. In those cases, the barrel’s “croze,” which is near the barrel head, was sealed with the paste.
Whether you’re dealing with a gluten-containing fining agent or a wine that was aged in a wooden cask or barrel and sealed with a wheat paste, it only will add a minuscule amount of gluten to the finished wine. In fact, the range of gluten is likely 5 to 10 ppm or less. Now, this is a very small amount of glutenso small that it takes the most sensitive gluten testing methods to detect.
It should also be noted that any food or beverage containing 10ppm or less can become officially certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization .
Many people with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity will never experience symptoms at levels less than 10ppm. Very few who react to gluten will notice symptoms from the trace amounts of gluten in wine. Unless you know for certain that you react to certain wines, you shouldn’t worry about it.

Distilled Alcohol Is Gluten Free
Is there gluten free alcohol? Yes! Liquors like rum , tequila and brandy are not made with gluten, so they are safe for celiacs and others with gluten sensitivity.
Distilled grain alcohols including vodka, bourbon, whiskey, scotch, brandy, and gin ARE gluten free even though they are made with gluten containing grains. The distillation process actually removes the gluten protein from the end product, so unless the manufacturer adds gluten as a flavoring AFTER distillation, those liquors are indeed gluten free.
Let me repeat that in case it was unclear: A PROPER DISTILLATION REMOVES GLUTEN PROTEINS. Therefore, even though grain alcohols may have started out with wheat or barley or rye, after distillation the process that transforms them into liquor they no longer contain gluten. Period.
Check with the manufacturer directly if you are concerned that gluten in flavoring may be added after distillation; many, like Frangelico, for example, are proactively declaring on their websites that their formulas are gluten free.
Distilled alcohol choices made only from gluten free grains like corn or potato also exist, for those with wheat or barley allergy or those who wish to drink naturally gluten free liquor.

Is Wine Gluten Free: Gluten In Wine
Beer, whiskey, and other alcohols are made from grain, which means they contain gluten. Wine, however, comes from grapes, a fruit which contains none of the gluten proteins found in grain. The average bottle of grape juice contains no gluten, so theres no reason a bottle of wine should either, right?
Well, thats not quite correct
You see, there are a few situations where winemakers will add ingredients into the wine that may contain traces of gluten. For example:
A special sealant is used in the oak barrels in order to prepare them for aging. This sealant helps to reduce the risk of leaks. However, it may contain traces of gluten, thanks to the fact that its a sort of paste made from flour.
Thankfully, this practice is VERY uncommon most barrels are now sealed with paraffin wax.
To fine wine means to clarify and stabilise it, eliminating any particles from floating in the liquid. Some rarely used fining agents do contain gluten, which may mean that your wine is exposed to the protein. However, egg proteins, isinglass or bentonite are the most commonly used fining agents, so its highly unlikely that there is gluten in your wine.

Both of these methods do expose your wine to contact with gluten, but the truth is that the amount of gluten in your wine is so small as to be almost negligible.

Seltzers & Bubbles With A Kick
One of the newest alternatives to beer on the gluten free market is seltzer water with a kick. These bubbly beverages are so refreshing!
Made from purified water and infused with natural fresh fruit flavors, these light alternatives to beer and wine contain 6% alcohol derived from fermentation of citrus and sugar. They are wonderful on their own to cool down on a hot summer day, or to use as mixers in any kind of libation. These beverages also come in bottles or cans.

OK, so if there was anyone uniquely positioned to be the authority on gluten-free wine, I guess it would be me.
I wrote a post about Gluten-Free Vodka, and in it I stated that I am not worried about gluten in wine, and I dont think you should be, either.; Oh, the emails!; So, heres the info Ive used, along with real-world-in-several-wineries-experience, to assert that Wine is Gluten-Free.;
It should be noted that all U.S. gluten-free governing and advocacy bodies, including Beyond Celiac, Celiac Disease Foundation + Center for Celiac Disease Research have ruled that wine is gluten-free, plus the FDA.

Best Gluten Free Wines You Have To Try
Wine is usually gluten-free wines, but that only means that its gluten content is below the FDA approved the amount. Which means less than 20 parts per million. This number is quite low, so many people with gluten intolerance can view it as gluten-free.
Unfortunately, though, those with celiac disease can be too sensitive to this chemical. So even if a certain food or drink is labelled as gluten-free, it might not be fit for them. Which is why some manufacturers make things specifically without gluten.
In our case, wine.
All About Gluten Free Beers
Beer used to never be gluten free. Luckily, many craft brewers and even big breweries like Anheuser-Busch are now offering special gluten free beer. Most are brewed from alternative grains like sorghum and millet, so are considered naturally gluten free beers.
There is another category of beer that is called gluten-removed or gluten-reduced; these beers are made from barley in the traditional brew-making style, and are not allowed to be labeled as gluten-free in the U.S., although local state laws may differ when the beers are not crossing state lines.
Experts caution against celiacs and those with gluten sensitivity drinking these beers, since its unclear whether they are truly gluten freeenough to be safe.

Wine Coolers And Gluten
Many people consider wine coolers, to be wine products. Therefore, they might not realize how many other ingredients these alcoholic products containand how likely they are to containgluten. The alcohol brands that produce wine coolers containing gluten in the form of barley malt include:

Because manufacturers of alcoholic beverages do not have to list ingredients on their labels, you should steer clear of bottled wine coolers. Hard cider is almost always naturally gluten-free and makes a good gluten-free alternative to wine coolers.

I was wondering if someone could help me. I am still learning about the do’s and don’ts of this disease and thought that all wine was gluten free. Last night I had two glasses of Yellow Tail chardonney and woke up at 12:30 AM in so much pain I actually vomitted. This is not the first time that I have had this reaction to wine. Can someone tell me if there are only specific types of wine I can drink? Any help would be appreciated.
