The chairman of the House Select Committee on Youth demanded that the makers of the fortified wine Cisco, denounced as liquid crack by health organizations, change the shape of its bottle from one appearing to be a wine cooler to one in which liquor is customarily sold.
Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., on Monday also criticized the Treasury Department agency that regulates the sale of alcohol products for not taking stronger steps to protect the public from Cisco.
Twenty-six other members of the House joined Miller in signing a letter demanding that Canandaigua Wine Co. redesign the bottle to distinguish Cisco, which contains 20 percent alcohol, from its present shape. Wine coolers contain only 7 percent or less alcohol.
Cisco, the letter said, is a product so dangerous to the health and safety of the public that the surgeon general, Antonia C. Novello, the American Academy of Pediatrics . . . have called for its total ban.
Rep. Bill Paxon, R-Amherst, whose 31st Congressional District includes Canandaigua, has not yet signed the letter, his press secretary, Mike Zabel, said. Canandaigua Wine is a leading producer and exporter of wine coolers and is by far the largest purchaser of the 140,000 tons of wine grapes produced in Western New York annually.

Sokol Blosser began producing what would later become acclaimed Pinot Noir wines from the Dundee Hills and Eola-Amity Hills AVAs in 1971. Launched by wife and husband Susan Sokol and Bill Blosser , the winery produced its first vintage in 1977. It quickly began winning awards and set standards in the industry.
In 2008, after 37 years running the business together, Bill and Susan passed the reins on to two of their three children, Alex and Alison. Alex Sokol Blosser is the head winemaker, while Alison is CEO. The brother and sister share the title of co-president, and truly feel they are second-generation stewards of the brand and land.

This is another very good winery. We were charged $40 for the required advance reservation, which was refunded upon our arrival at the winery. Their $28 tasting fee is waived with a minimum purchase of 3 bottles of wine. We were warmly welcomed at the door, given a wine glass with our first taste and ushered to a table for our tasting. The table was already set up, and even had our name posted on it. After tasting a Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and two Pinot Noirs, we asked about their Sauvignon Blanc. We were offered a sample and we liked it so much, we bought 3 bottles! This was a very pleasant tasting experience with a very knowledgeable Sokol Blosser employee who was able to easily answer our questions. The staff at Sokol Blosser are very service oriented without being overwhelming. We highly recommend this winery for a tasting experience.
