What Is The Sober Curious Movement
What is sober curious? You become sober curious when you decide to avoid consuming alcohol for personal reasons. Not everyone who avoids drinking alcohol has an alcohol problem. Perhaps you are concerned about your drinking even though it hasnt gotten to the stage of addiction or dependence.
The sober curious movement promotes being more intentional about your drinking habits, why you drink and how you drink. Ruby Warrington coined the term for the title of her 2018 book. The sober curious movement is meant to help people step back and evaluate how alcohol affects their lives and what they can do to control their alcohol intake.
For sober-curious people who may still enjoy the smell and taste of wine, non-alcoholic wine can help them on their path to cutting down on their alcohol consumption. Being curious about your sobriety can help you mitigate the health risks that come from alcohol consumption and set you on a path to health and emotional control.
What Does Non Alcoholic Wine Taste Like
Some of you might be wondering nowCan I just buy a fruit concentrate from local Walmart or Target and add water to it? Will it be alcohol-free wine?
And the answer is of course not
This is where non-alcohol wines are very different from fruit concentrates you buy from supermarkets.
Fruit concentrates are syrupy sweet alcohol-free wines are not. Such wines only miss the alcohol part, not the taste part! You can still enjoy the tannins and the texture of the original wine.
Having said that, it may not hold true for all types of alcohol-free wines that you can find out there. Many of them miss the complexity and flavor that their alcoholic versions truly stand for.
This is especially true for red wines as the alcohol-free red wine resembles the alcoholic version in taste but may lack the full-bodied flavor and texture.
This happens because it is mostly the alcohol part in the wine that renders all aromas together in wine and gives it the thickness and the mouth feel that a typical red wine stands for
On the other hand, as many people rightly say, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.
When you drink alcohol-free wines, you are not looking for differences between them and their counter parts, but you are making a life change to switch to non-alcohol drinking.
So even though many dealcoholized drinks do not taste the same as many red or white wines do, they can still be enjoyed for their health benefits and for the smart lifestyle changes they offer.

Potential Health Benefits Of Non
Alcohol has been shown to have negative effects on the body. Per calorie, alcohol is metabolized differently than sugars or starches, and can affect your blood sugar levels in different ways.
Some studies show that drinking red wine may offer beneficial cardiovascular benefits because of its antioxidant properties , while other research contradicts this.
However, this study found dealcoholized wine as an effect way to reduce blood pressure, which is evidence that more research should be conducted in the health benefits of consuming non-alcoholic wine aside from simply avoiding alcohol.
In addition to those surprising benefits, there is a significant difference between the calories in ARIEL Cabernet Sauvignon and alcoholic cabernet style wines: around 3-4x less! One downside is that one glass contains around 10g of sugar, so low sugar dieters beware.

What To Expect From Non
As someone who enjoys and appreciates the real deal, I wasnt quite sure what to expect from non-alcoholic wine.
I knew I probably wouldnt find a bottle that tasted exactly like real wine, since the wine-making process is what gives grape juice its wine-like characteristics: tannins, nuanced aromas, distinctive flavors, all of which are mostly removed through dealcoholizing.
What I hoped to find, though, were options that could be sipped like wine, in a nice glass, that embody the feeling and some of the taste that comes from enjoying real wine.
The most basic definition of wine is fermented grape juice, so to make non-alcoholic wine, you have two options: either bottle the grape juice before its fermented or let the grape juice ferment into wine and then dealcoholize it or remove the alcohol by distillation.
I sampled bottles that were made both ways: wine that was bottled before fermentation and dealcoholized wine. I found some nice choices, but interestingly the ones I liked the least were wines in which the alcohol was removed. None made my final list.
Here are the five that did.

Fermentation And Alcohol Formation
Depending on whether the vintner is making red or white wine, they may remove any seeds, skin and stems from the grape juice. These items produce the most tannins, which are responsible for the dryness of a wine. For red wine, the winemaker leaves the seeds, skin and stems to ferment with the grape juice, but for white wine, the winemaker separates these items out.
Then the vintner leaves the wine to ferment. In the process of fermentation, yeast converts the sugar content in the grape juice to alcohol to produce the wine. The vintner adds different types of yeast depending on the flavors they want to achieve. The wine ferments for as long as the winemaker wants. For example, if they want to reserve some sweetness to the wine, they stop the fermentation early, before all the yeast eats all the sugar. For a drier wine, the grape juice sits through the complete fermentation process until the yeast has converted all the sugar into alcohol.
The fermentation process typically starts between six and 18 hours after the grapes are crushed and can last for one or more months based on the amount of alcohol the winemaker wants. Once fermentation is complete, the wine can contain as much as 14% alcohol by volume .
The process of fermentation also produces different aromas, flavors and tastes in the wine, which together are called the wines bouquet. The alcohol typically carries most of a wines bouquet.

Proxies By Acid League
Acid League, the maker of Proxies, started out in 2019 developing raw vinegars from fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices. They continue to make these specialty vinegars in small batches for the highly experimental chef. Along the way, the fermentation experiments gave way to Proxies, which are both non-alcoholic and explicitly non-wine. Layered blends of juices, teas, spices, bitters, and more designed to pair with food and be enjoyed in your finest stemware is how the drinks are described. There are currently seven flavors of Proxies, all with moody names that impart more of a vibe than an actual description, like Velvet,Zephyr,Nightshade, and Moss. But what exactly are they?
Each of the Proxies is made with a group of core components that includes a traditional winemaking grape, as well as additional fruits like cherry, cranberry, strawberry, apple, grapefruit, kiwi, and more. Additional core components are broken down into ingredients that impart acidity, body, and spice. Emma Orlow at Bon Appétit writes, It had all of the complexity thats typically reserved for booze was a lot more interesting than other non-alcoholic bevs Ive tried. Its worth noting that while the Proxies mimic the experience of pouring and drinking wine, they arent claiming to perfectly replicate a particular type of vino.
Avoiding Promoting Alcoholto Children
Whether you drink alcohol ornot, youll likely agree that we shouldnt promote alcohol to minors.
Whats this got to do with drinks that dont contain alcohol?
Alcohol-free beer may not contain much if any alcohol. But the packaging and the drink itself is almost indistinguishable from alcoholic beer. And although there are many producers that only produce alcohol-free beer, lots of alcohol-free and non-alcoholic beers are produced by companies that also produce alcoholic drinks.
This means that promoting alcohol substitute drinks such as alcohol-free beer to minors including allowing them to buy it could indirectly promote similar products to them that do contain alcohol.
Two alcohol organisations that have publicly available policies about the promotion and sale of non-alcoholic drinks to minors are the corporate arm of brands like Budweiser and Becks, AB-Inbev, and the Portman Group, a UK trade group of alcoholic drinks producers.
AB-Inbevs Responsible Marketing and Communications Code, which identifies how the company will prevent its products appealing to those under the legal drinking age, specifically mentions that covers includes alcohol-free and non-alcoholic products.
