Jesse Bongiovi, whats harder? Starting up a world class rosè, Hampton Water, or tackling a 240-pound fullback in the secondary at Notre Dame?

Bongiovi of Middletown has done both.

Both are very difficult, I would say, said Bongiovi recently at the Melting Pot in Red Bank. I think this was a lot harder but a lot less physically taxing. I dont wake up feeling so beat up after this.

Hampton Water is a collaboration between Bongiovi, dad Jon Bon Jovi and French winemaker Gérard Bertrand. It features Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre grape varieties, characteristic of the French Mediterranean region. Wine Spectator called it a crowd pleaser and gave it 90 points.

But before the wine making, Bongiovi was walk-on cornerback for Notre Dame football. He made his game debut during his junior season versus the University of Massachusetts in 2015.

Lessons learned on the gridiron are being applied to Hampton Water.

I was never the biggest, fastest or strongest guy on the field, but I basically said to myself Im going to show up everyday and work as hard as I physically can, said Bongiovi, who was listed as 5-9, 194 for his senior year. Ive really taken that into everything I try to do. If I do something, Im going to dive into it all the way and put my all into it.

So it is with Hampton Water, which started out as a concept at Bon Jovis East Hampton house.

Introduced in 2017, Hampton Water Rosé was conceived by rocker Jon Bon Jovi and his son Jesse Bongiovi, who brought the idea to French winemaker Gerard Bertrand. Learning the wines origin, I couldnt help but think of the lyrics to the Bon Jovi hit Wanted Dead or Alive: Sometimes you tell the day by the bottle that you drink Who knew that one of those bottles was French rosé?

But this wine is no joke. Its rock solid. Pun intended, but its true. The 2020 vintage is made with 60% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 15% Mourvèdre, and 10% Syrah grapes all drawn from the Languedoc region of Southern France and aged in French oak barrels for 30 to 60 days. Interestingly, it has been paired with premium candy maker Sugarfinas Candy Bento Box, which includes three different gummy candies made with rosé wine.

2020 Hampton Water Rosé Pouring pale pink in the glass, the 2020 Hampton Water Rosé is delightfully complex. The red berry notes one typically finds in the rosés of southern France are well represented on the nose and palate, and they are joined by bright orange citrus, minerality, a touch of spice, and a creamy mouthfeel that likely draws from the time it spent in oak.
