Food Lion this month expanded online grocery curbside pickup to another 46 stores in the Carolinas and Virginia.
The Salisbury, N.C.-based supermarket chain said Monday that its Food Lion To Go pickup service is now available at 14 more stores, including eight locations in North Carolina and six locations in Virginia. Earlier in June, Food Lion To Go pickup launched at 32 stores, including 28 in North Carolina, three in South Carolina and one in Virginia.

Through the click-and-collect service, customers can shop for and buy groceries including fresh produce, meat, seafood, deli and bakery items online at shop.foodlion.com or via the Food Lion To Go mobile app and have them available for pickup at a local store in as soon as an hour. Customers ages 21 and older in North Carolina also can buy beer and wine via To Go, which runs seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Perishables are stored in a refrigerated or frozen space, and hot food and other fresh items are packed just before shoppers scheduled arrival at the store. Upon arrival, shoppers park in a designated To Go space, and a Food Lion associate brings out their groceries and loads them into their vehicle.

A liquor store owner said he and others plan to take a stand at a public hearing today on the proposed transfer of a wine and beer license from Woodburns of Solomons to the Food Lion off H.G. Trueman Road in Lusby.
Mike and Carolyn Hart, the owners of Patuxent Wine and Spirits, which is across the street from the grocery store, said the transfer of the license which does not include hard liquor could ruin their business by luring customers from their establishment to the grocery store.
But Thomas McKay, a co-owner of Woodburns, who is seeking the license transfer, makes the same argument: that without the transfer his business will die.
A public hearing on the matter is to be held today before the Calvert County Board of License Commissioners, which oversees all matters involving liquor licensure in the county.
Calvert officials have in the past denied the expansion of a Wal-Mart and the construction of national chain hardware stores, such as Home Depot, in the county, citing concerns that the chain stores could take business from local stores. The Harts said they formed a group of eight or nine liquor stores that oppose it. Although Mike Hart said he did not want to list names without having confirmation, he said that two of those owners plan to attend the hearing.
It could affect a lot of liquor stores across the area if they can get this into the big-box stores, Carolyn Hart said of the proposed transfer. There are a lot of people forming to protest.

Food Lion Now Delivering Beer Wine Via Instacart
Food Lion has added beer and wine delivery to all areas where it offers home delivery service, as part of its partnership with San Francisco-based third-party grocery delivery service Instacart.
Customers ordering alcohol on Instacart will have to provide their date of birth during the online checkout process to confirm they are 21 or older. Further, a recipient age 21 or older must sign for the order and show proof of legal age with valid photo identification.
“As we work to expand our home delivery service, Food Lion is proud to provide this additional offering of beer and wine as part of our ongoing commitment to making grocery shopping easy and convenient,” noted Neil Norman, director of customer loyalty at the Salisbury, N.C.-based grocer.
Food Lion is currently testing the Instacart service in 57 ZIP codes across the greater Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C. regions. Additionally, Food Lion has expanded home delivery to 40 ZIP codes across the Charlotte area.
The supermarket chain first piloted Instacart in in May 2016 in Charlotte, followed by the launch of the service in Raleigh a month later. According to the grocer, it will continue to test and expand the service in select ZIP codes in these areas.
