A plate of trout crostini accompanies a glass of cold Dark Horse Chardonnay exceptionally well. As also juicy salmon. Both food choices combine well with the bright apple and ripe exotic flavors of the wine and the butterscotch finish. Roast chicken or even a rosemary pork roast can drive the taste buds crazy when paired with Dark Horse Chardonnay. As a last resort choice, pair the wine with a pepperoni pizza served with brioche garlic bread for more casual occasions.

The Original Dark Horse Chardonnay, California 2014

Dry full body nice, round texture in the mouth good acidity . The Dark Horse tasting notes say this was fermented entirely in stainless steel, but there are oaky, buttery elements. Rich, ripe fruits give sweet quality to the blend of 87% chardonnay, 5% viognier , 3% gewürztraminer 5% other grapes 13.5% ABV.

I am tasting this five years after the vintage, which may explain in deep gold color, but it also shows that it has held up well. This is cheap wine that punches above its weight and will please many palates, especially if you have a taste for oak and butter done well and rich, ripe flavors. The viognier is a nice touch, giving this wine a dollop of complexity and aromatics.

Dark Horse is a Gallo brand, and Gallo certainly knows how to produce crowd pleasers. This is no exception. One of the reasons Gallo launched Dark Horse was to present very approachable wines in the $8-10 price range, hoping to show you can enjoy good wine for less than $10. That may be the backstory to the name: a dark horse is something people do not think will win, but may do so anyway. Dark Horse is a winner in its value wine niche.

How did you get into the wine business? After completing my undergrad work at California Poly in San Luis Obispo, there were hundreds of wineries within an hour in each direction. I had a bunch of friends working in tasting rooms and that seemed like a cool job so the day after I turned 21 I got a job at a tasting room for a winery that specialized in methode champenoise sparkling production.

I immediately fell in love with the industry, the combination of art and science, and how every day and harvest presents a new challenge. I got a minor in Wine and Viticulture and then worked in sales for a couple of years before going back to school to study for a Food Science graduate programme focusing on oenology. Ive been with Gallo for 14 years and have also spent harvests in Napa and in South Australia.

How would you describe your winemaking philosophy? My winemaking philosophy really revolves around constantly learning and challenging yourself in everything you do. Always asking how we can make better wine, make different wine, or make it more efficiently. Always pulling inspiration from everything around us, not just the wine industry, but everything from craft beer trends, cocktail trends, or travel experiences.

E& J Gallo Has Announced It Will Roll Out New Packaging For Its Wine Brand Dark Horse In The Uk

The new labels, which will be phased in between April and September, lead with the brands iconic horse head logo, but now each varietal has its own designated colour to enable greater stand out on shelf and drive differentiation across the range.

They will land in the UK this year after already debuting in the US.

Olga Senkina, Marketing Director EMEA, E& J Gallo Winery, said consumers response to the packaging has been overwhelmingly positive with drinkers showing a much stronger preference for the new labels.

The distinctive designs make Dark Horse easier to find in store and the strong colours enhance the brands stand-out on shelf, setting it apart from its competitors. Research has also revealed that consumers perceive the wine to be better-tasting as a result of the new look, she said.

A recent Nielsen Packaging Study which featured Dark Horse wines conducted in the US showed that consumers were 20% more likely to buy Dark Horse wine in its new packaging compared to the existing labels.

Dark Horse California Ros Wine Review:

Challenging the wine industry, Dark Horse is a modern winery with a whole lot of attitude. Fierce winemaker, and the person at the helm of this company is Beth Liston. Beth created the Dark Horse California Rosé to be a backyard BBQ contender. Because most Rosé found in the states are imports and therefore costly, she really wanted to grow something right in California that would be affordable. Of course, this dry crisp wine had to contend with the best of the bestand it does!

Rosé is a wine often misunderstood. Luckily, Beth set the record straight about these two common Rosé myths:

Rosé is a sweet wine!

  • That may be true for some, but definitely not for all. Provence-style Rosés have become a summer staple thanks to a perfectly dry finish that rounds out the fruit. Its that super satisfying balance that inspired me to create my dry Dark Horse Rosé. Beth Liston

Rosé can simply be made by mixing red and white wine together!

  • Well, it may be pink, but it wont be Rosé. Rosés are actually made with red grapes that are lightly crushed and left to steep with their red skins. The longer that the wine stays with the skin, the deeper the color. Beth Liston

Pinot Noir. Elegant. Layered. Flavorful. Our velvety smooth Pinot Noir wine is pleasantly dry and complements absolutely everything. Layered with notes of dark cherry and strawberries balanced with a flavorful finish, Dark Horse Pinot Noir is light enough for fish and charcuterie yet complex enough for richer dishes like roasted chicken or pasta.

Is Gallo Good Wine

Gallo Family wines never fail to over-deliver, and you can bet that the quality has something to do with the use of a fair amount of good Sonoma County grapes to maintain the consistently high quality. Much like the Jacobs Creek wines, though, the best values are in the reds Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah.
