Ask the world’s top sommeliers, or the wealthiest collectors of wine why they are fanatical about Pinot Noir, and you’ll get essentially the same response: It’s a grape that produces the greatest wines in the world.

The sacred home of Pinot Noir is France’s Burgundy region. Some of the most expensive red Burgundy wines in the world begin here as tiny, delicate clusters of precious berries dangling from rows of pristine, manicured vines. As Jancis Robinson MW, says, it is a grape “capable of producing divinely scented, gorgeously fruity expressions of place.”

To give you an idea of its potential, a current-release of one of the most sought-after wines in the worlda rare Grand Cru Red Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits, produced by Aubert de Villaine at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti retails in the U.S. for around $15,000-$20,000 or more per bottle.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to buy a bottle of DRC to become an expert in Pinot Noir. What you need to do is understand the grape, and taste the classics.

Next, gather these 30 Pinots and drink them, while pondering their place of origin and the story behind each bottle. Good Pinot isn’t typically cheap, so you’ve got to be willing to pony up a little more to become an expert, but it’s worth it. Cristom Pinot Noir Louise Vineyard Eola

The Eola-Amity Hills AVA is another source of truly exceptional American Pinot Noirs, and again, it comes down to soils and climate: Vines are rooted in 15.5 million-year-old Columbia River Basalt Group soils, and others on Helvetia, which was deposited in the infamous Missoula Floodsvery deep, well-draining soils. “Louise” was the first vineyard planted by founder Paul Gerrie and also the most unique. Steep, slopes which gradually change in soil type yield the deepest, darkest, and most structured Pinot Noirs in the Cristom portfolio. Creamy with ample dark fruit, sweet spices and hints of cedar and clove.

Alois Lageder Krafuss Pinot Noir Trentino

You’re practically a Pinot expert by now. So, don’t let anyone roll their eyes at you when you start praising the Pinot Noirs from the northeast of Italy! Researchers have noted that Pinot grapes first made their way here in the 1830s. Grown at higher altitudes, the climate is cooler, and hence kinder to Pinot Noir. The Lageder familygrape growers and producers in 1823 was around when those grapes were introduced, and today, fifth and sixth-generation family members carry the torch. Medium bodied, spicy with fresh and bright red berry flavors.

Tasting Notes For Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is a dry red wine that is relatively pale in color and is characterized by moderate tannins, moderate to moderate-plus alcohol and high acidity. Typical aromas and flavors include red fruit, savory herbs, earthy tones, black tea and violets. With age Pinot Noir wine can develop hauntingly alluring characteristics of fresh earth, savory spice and dried fruit. Pinot Noir is highly reflective of its terroir and therefore can offer a varied flavor profile, for example:

  • Burgundy: Silky and ethereal, with cherry, cranberry, hibiscus, forest floor, mushroom, leather.
  • Oregon: Complex and supple, with ripe red berries, dusty earth and loam.
  • New Zealand: Concentrated yet balanced, with strawberry, cherry, wild herbs.
  • Californias Russian River Valley: Can be bolder, with black cherry and plum, cola and dark loamy notes.
  • Californias Sta. Rita Hills: Dynamic and vivid, with bright red fruit, oak and spice.

According to Jim Bernau, the president of Willamette Valley Vineyards, one of Oregons leading Pinot Noir producers, cool climate Pinot Noir, especially whole cluster fermented wines, are more likely to deliver high levels of resveratrol than other varietal red wines.

Jim Bernau, President, Willamette Valley Vineyards

Bernau notes that resveratrol is a fungicide, a polyphenolic compound an antimicrobial deterrent and repellant that is naturally produced by grape plants to protect grapes from molds. Its found in the skin of the grapes.

Red grape varieties grown in cool regions that are prone to high levels of humidity during harvest time, and more prone to mold damage, will produce higher levels of resveratrol than red grapes grown in drier regions.

Thin skinned grapes are even more vulnerable to being attacked by molds, so those varieties of grapes, he believes, also tend to produce even higher levels of resveratrol. According to Bernau, local climatic conditions post veraison, regardless of where the thin-skinned grapes are grown, is the determining factor.

There are many thin-skinned red grape varietals. Sangiovese, Tuscanys main grape varietal, is famously thin skinned, although Sangiovese Grosso, the Sangiovese clone used to make Brunello di Montalcino, is much thicker skinned.

To maximize the level of resveratrol in a wine, Bernau argues, its necessary to minimize the wines contact with oxygen.

Escarpment Pinot Noir Te Rehua Martinborough Nz

At the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island, in the Wairarapa region, the Pinots from just around the town of Martinborough are fast becoming critical darlings. The area shares similarities to Marlboroughample sunshine, cool nights, rocky, well-draining soilsmaking it a hotbed for Point, but there’s something terrifically refined about the Pinots from here. They’re perhaps less flashy and opulent as those from Marlborough, and Escarpment’s founder, Larry McKenna, is a pioneer of the region. The grapes for Te Rehua are hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts, gentle pressing into partial new French oak barriques for 18 months, bottled unfiltered, giving way to a mouth-filling and firmly structured wine, layered with creamy black cherry, sandalwood, wild sage, and cracked pepper.

In the 2004 Oscar winning film Sideways, part romantic comedy, part serious homage to wine, the lead character delivers a heartfelt tribute to the pinot noir grape. As a result, pinot sales everywhere rocketed.

While the films protagonist was spot on calling it a hard grape to grow, with the right combination of soils, topography and climate working together, the results can be sensational.

Burgundy, of course, was the original tucked away place, where some of the most legendary pinots are produced. But in recent decades, remarkable pinots have been produced in New Zealand, California and Chile. And in England, fabulous pinot is also starting to be produced, which its advocates say might represent our best chance of producing a truly great red wine.

All pinot noirs are very food friendly, pairing well with both lighter duck and lamb dishes, as well as being one of the few red wines to work with fish, particularly rare tuna. Plus, the earthy quality also means it goes very well with mushrooms and with game.

So, as we head into the autumn, these wines are ideal for both warm days and cooler evenings. Drink at room temperature, or the straight from the fridge door.

Food & Pinot Noir Wine Pairings

Pinot Noir is an amazingly food-friendly wine. Its silky elegance, however, can be overwhelmed by strong food flavors and spices. It pairs very well with salmon, duck, lamb, pork, veal, chicken, turkey and mushrooms, especially in lighter, grilled or roasted dishes.

Lighter-bodied American Pinot Noirwines tend to be less expensive than full-bodied ones. Full-bodied Pinot Noirs pair well with beef, lamb and game, especially roasted or grilled.

Avoid serving Pinot Noir with smoked fish, spicy dishes, sweet dishes, fruit and fruit-based dishes or sauces.

Pinot Noir is a popular restaurant wine and a safe choice for many pairings because it has enough body and cripsness to handle both heavy and light dishes, and pleases both red and white wine drinkers. The only drawback is that Pinot Noir is rarely available in restaurants for less than $30. Alternatives to Pinot Noir? Look for a good Beaujolais, like Moulin-a-Vent, Brouilly, Fleurie or Morgon.

Bon appetit!

Best French : Domaine De Montille Bourgogne Pinot Noir

Courtesy of Vivino

Region: Burgundy, France | ABV: 12.5% | Tasting Notes: Crushed raspberries, Cranberries, Black pepper, Sweet spice

The de Montille family is no stranger to Burgundian vineyards. The familys regional roots date back to the 1730s, though it was really during the mid-20th century that the domaine took its viticultural focus on quality to a whole new level. Etienne de Montille officially took over from his father back in 1995. Since then, he converted all of the vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming today, the estate is one of the rare few in Burgundy that is equally renowned for both its red and white wine production.

Today, de Montille vinifies his reds with a good amount of whole clusters and implements 12-16 days of macerations with minimal punch-downs. Wines are aged in wood for about a year prior to release, most of which is used. This savory Bourgogne Rouge jumps with perfumed flavors of crushed raspberries, cranberries, black pepper, and a hint of sweet spice.

This Giant Steps delivers juicy red fruits, ample spice, and a long, grippy finish tinged with cola and sage.
