Alcohol And Calories: Low Alcohol Wine Vs Low Calorie Wine

Unlike the food labelling laws, wine manufacturers arent required to list ingredients on their wines, just allergens. How can you know about calories in wine if the nutritional information isnt available on the wine label?

The higher the alcohol content of the wine, the less residual sugar it contains, but the more calories the wine has.

This might sound counter to the above advice knowing that lower alcohol means higher sugar content, but the lower the alcohol content, the fewer the calories.

Why?

  • Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram.
  • Carbohydrates contains 4 calories per gram.

Meaning the higher the alcohol content of your wine, the higher the calorie count of your wine.

  • White wine tends to have a lower alcohol content than red wine, making it low-calorie alcohol in comparison.
  • Sparkling wine like champagne is the ultimate low-calorie alcohol always opt for the brut nature version as this also has the least sugar of all too.

Opt for a wine with lower alcohol content if you are looking for a wine with fewer calories. Also, learn more about calories in a bottle of wine.

What Colour Wine Has The Lowest Sugar Content

Generally speaking, red wine has the lowest sugar content, with an average of around 0.9g per serving. White wines will usually have around 1.4g of sugar per serving, although this varies by type. Given its sweet nature, it will come as no surprise to learn that a glass of rose could include a huge 21g to 72g of sugar.

However, you shouldnt base your choice purely on sugar content. There are many other factors to consider when evaluating the health implications of different wines. Take red wine, for example. Whilst it may have the lowest sugar content, red wines tend to have a higher overall calorie content than other wines, partly due to its higher alcohol content. Its best to understand the whole picture when determining which wine is right for your needs.

The sugar in wine is called Residual Sugar or RS.

That means the sugar in wine is what remains after grapes have gone through the winemaking process. Grapes contain fruit sugars and the residual sugar is whats left after yeast has chomped on those sugars.

Dry vs. Sweet WineDuring winemaking, yeast eats up sugar and makes ethanol as a by-product. When the yeast is able to eat up all the sugar the result is a dry wine higher in alcohol content and low in sugar. When the yeast is is stopped by a winemaker sugar remains and alcohol is lower.

How and why the White Stuff varies between different types of wine? How to know which wine is the lowest sugar wine? There are different amounts of sugar in different types of wine.

Wine contains residual sugar, and its just part and parcel of drinking wine, it doesnt necessarily mean that your wine has had sugar added in. The naturally occurring sugars in the grapes are eaten by the yeast and turned into ethanol the alcohol, as a by-product during the fermentation process.

  • Dry white and dry red wines

Essentially, the dryer a wine, the less sugar it has as the yeast has eaten all the sugars in the grapes. Dry wines have lower residual levels, ranging from 1 to 3 grams per litre of wine.

What Wine Has The Least Sugar

Lately, it feels like the only sugar we’re craving is the kind Harry Styles sings about in “Watermelon Sugar.” Unfortunately, Harry hasn’t responded to any of our calls or texts, so it appears we’re stuck with all of the other kinds of sugar, which are a little more carb-rich than the one Harry has to offer. At least we can have wine…

So, we’ll cut to the chase and take a page out of our go-getter sales team’s book. If you’re avoiding excess sugar, the blunt truth is: wine has sugar. But we’ve got good news! Bev, oh hey there that’s us, has ZERO sugar! And here’s even more good news: wines are different when it comes to their sugar content. The wine with the least sugar content are dry wines, and they have residual sugar levels of about .1-.03%.

So here we go, we promised a blog on all wines and sugar, so we’ll do what we promised and dive right in!

But Why Is Sugar Added To Wine

Some winemakers need to add the White Stuff when they use under-ripe grapes to make their wine not to make wine more sweet, but to enable yeasts to produce more alcohol . This process is called chaptalization, where cane or beet sugar is added to the crushed grapes before the grapes ferment in order to increase the alcohol by volume of the final wine.

So, more sugar content in wine = more alcohol by volume.

Chaptalization is illegal in some countries or states in the US where they can routinely grow grapes with naturally occurring higher sugar content. Chaptalization is not allowed in:

Calculating Calories In Wine

We use the following calculation from to calculate the number of grams of alcohol in a bottle or glass of wine, use this formula:

volume x alcohol x 81000

Multiplying this answer by sevenwill give you the approximate calorie content of a bottle of wine divide that number by 5 to find the amount in a 5 oz. glass.

Using this model, a standard bottle of wine at 750ml with an Alcohol by Volume of 12.5% would have approximately 525 calories. With approximately 5, 5oz servings of wine per 750ml bottle, that means there would be an estimated 105 calories per glass. We used this calculation to determine the calories in each of our sugar free wines.

Another important observation brought up by regarding residual sugar vs. calories:

a sweeter wine with low alcohol could be lower in calories than a high-alcohol dry white, because the residual sugar is a less-concentrated source of carbohydrate than alcohol, at four calories per gram.

Cutting Back On Sugar Stock Your Wine Rack With These 11 Keto

Plus, the wines to avoid!

By Lourdes Avila Uribe

For those of us who identify as wine snobs, it can be difficult to stay the course when a diet restricts alcohol consumption. And lets be honest, most diets and healthy lifestyles require that alcohol intake be moderate, at the very leastfair enough! I know that once I get a glass or two in me, the second plate of french fries seems eminently reasonable. But if youve ever been curious about the keto diet , youll be happy to know that it is possible to enjoy your nightly glass of vino thanks to a few delicious keto wine brands.

Have you ever tried the ketogenic diet? For the diet-averse such as myself, it is an appealing option. Its a low-carb, high-fat diet that puts the body in a state of ketosis, which burns fat for energy at a high level of efficiency. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which supplies energy to the brain. The best part? Chocolate, cheese, meat, and even some wines are good to go while on a keto diet. Phew!

But heres the thing, not all wines are keto-friendly. In general, you want to stick with wines that have low or non-existent sugar content, are low in carbohydrates, and have lower alcohol content. In general, that means a drier wine, like those from France, Italy, and Greece. If a wine is sweet, then its probably not keto. Apologies to dessert wine lovers!
