According to a 2021 report from Brand Finance, Barefoot Wines is one of the 10 most valuable wine brands in the world. Its the second most valuable brand in the United States with a valuation of $509 million . Additionally, it beat out Lindemanns from Australia to take spot No. 6, up from seventh the year prior.
We Try Every Red Wine From Barefoot
Many a hypothesis has been thrown around as to why Barefoot wines are named “Barefoot.” Perhaps it’s the state in which a drinker will enjoy the wine most thoroughly. Perhaps it’s an allusion the mechanism by which the grapes were crushed back in the day. Or perhapsmost cynicallyit’s reflective of how the wines taste. A little digging has shown that the enjoyment of easy drinking wines is definitely what the E& J Gallo brand is going for: “It was time for a wine that didn’t take itself too seriously”.
This week, we worked our way through the second chapter in the Barefoot lineup: the reds. And our journey was actually much more enjoyable than our tasting of Barefoot’s whitespicking a winner between the red wines was a bit trickier there were a couple of options here that were relatively easy on the palate and on the wallet .

The Incredible Story Of Starting The World’s Largest Wine Brand Barefoot Wines
I was recently speaking with Michael Houlihan, co-founder of Barefoot Wines. This is the story of how two people overcame remarkable odds and built a beloved brand that transformed the wine industry. It is hard to believe that such an iconic brand as Barefoot Wines began in a laundry room of a rented farmhouse in the Sonoma County hills. Even more surprising is that the people who started it were just an average business couple, Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey. From the start, with virtually no money and no wine industry experience, they employed innovative ideas to overcome obstacles, create new markets and strategic alliances, while pioneering Worthy Cause Marketing and performance-based compensation. They successfully sold the brand to E& J Gallo in 2005 and Barefoot is now the largest wine brand in the world.
What were the challenges to starting a new company?
Because we really didnt know too much about the wine industry, we ended up revolutionizing it. When we started in 1986, wine was formal and exclusive. We made it fun and inclusive. The industry thought a wine with a foot on it would never sell. They though our slogan, Get Barefoot and have a great time! belonged on a beer, not a wine. Ironically it was the formerly exclusive beer drinkers who crossed over to this more fun, friendly and approachable message. Our initial fan base was folks who didnt like wine. They thought it was too snobby. Barefoot also appealed to moms shopping for a Tuesday night wine.
Barefoot Walked Before It Ran
The brands creator, Davis Bynum, began making Barefoot Bynum Burgundy wine out of his garage in 1965. He continued for two decades while building a dedicated following, and eventually sold the company to Bonnie Harvey and Michael Houlihan in 1986. As entrepreneurs, Harvey and Houlihan saw the value in creating a whimsical and inviting brand identity. They relaunched with the name Barefoot Cellars, and branded it with the now-recognizable footprint label.

Barefoot Wines is a California winery founded in 1965 by winemaker Davis Bynum. The name, Barefoot, as casual and unconventional as it may seem, refers to a free spirit of practice, which includes crushing bare grapes. Since its creation, the brand and its wine portfolio have expanded, now producing a wide range of premium wines that are exported internationally. In 2014 the company also entered the Australian market, growing grapes in southern Australia, one of the most popular areas for vineyards. Yellowtail wines of a varietal share basic characteristics. Ok, the wine professional in me has to point out that this is not actually Champagne because it is made in California, not the Champagne region of France. But it is a decent sparkling wine made from Chardonnay grapes grown in Californiaâs Napa Valley. Itâs perfect for sipping alone or for mixing into a mimosa or bellini . Itâs clean and straightforward, with flavors of green apple, honey, citrus, and grapefruit. It does have a touch of sweetness, despite the label of âExtra Dry,â but the sweetness is inoffensive. The bubbles are nice and fizzy, so if you throw a sparkling wine stopper in the bottle, the bubbles should be good for a day or two. If youâre looking for an easy-drinking sparkling wine, this one at $9.99 will deliver.

Price Point Does Not Dictate Quality
Its true that many higher-priced wines are superb and generally provide a Better quality product than less expensive options, however, you shouldnt solely base your decision on price alone because not all expensive wines are premium and not all affordable wine options are bad. But in our tests, some of the best wines are often relatively inexpensive. Conversely, some much more expensive wines have had mediocre scores.
Red Wine Cake Preparation
Preheat the oven to 175 degrees and grease a baking pan with butter.
Mix the butter, sugar and eggs in a large bowl. This is best done with a whisk or mixer. When the mixture is foamy, you can add the flour.
Now add the red wine, vanilla sugar, cocoa and cinnamon to the mixture and stir to form a firm batter.
Finally, mix the sprinkles into the batter. Then pour the batter into the baking tin and put it in the oven.
Bake the red wine cake for about 60 minutes, or until a satéprick comes out clean.
After baking, you can invert the bundt cake on a wire rack. When the cake has cooled you can dust it with some powdered sugar and cut into it. Enjoy your meal!

In its first years, lack of capital and little to no marketing budget forced Harvey and Houlihan to be creative. In an interview with Forbes, Houlihan explains how the duo used a marketing technique they dubbed Worthy Cause Marketing to grow from the ground up. By donating both wine and time to small, local non-profits, they could establish and retain brand trust. That trust grew from local to regional and eventually national organizations. Currently, Barefoot Wines is partnering with the New Voices Foundation for its #WeStanForHer campaign. It has invested over $150,000 in grants to Black women-owned businesses to support, recognize, and uplift emerging entrepreneurs.

Wines can falter from one year to the next to taste the new wine before you order a case of it based on enthusiasm for an old vintage.
