Kim Crawford Launches Lower
Kim Crawford Winery this month will soft-launch its new lower-cal wine line, Kim Crawford Illuminate.
The brand debuts with a low-ABV, lower-calorie take on the companys core Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé expressions.
Kim Crawford Illuminate reflects the brands signature crisp flavor, the company says, with an evolved label design to differentiate from the core varietals. Made from New Zealand grapes, these wines are lighter in style at 7% ABV, and 70 calories per glass.
Illuminate Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé will both make their way into select markets in very limited quantities fall 2020, and will become more widely available beginning March 2021.
The suggested retail price for both wines is $17.99 per 750-ml. bottle.

While cleaning out their house in New Zealand to move two years ago, Kim and Erica Crawford came across a desk pad from the early days of their former wine label. On it they had mapped out their future: Grow the brand, sell it within nine years and then buy land.
They had done just that–building a bestselling sauvignon blanc label that they sold for a small fortune, which allowed them to develop sizeable vineyards, land that they love. “We were very focused, between the two of us. We knew exactly where we were going,” says Erica.

The Crawfords are now almost a decade into their second act, running Loveblock Wines, their organics-driven estate amid the windswept hills of Marlborough in the northeastern tip of the South Island. It’s been challenging, even with their experience and capital. Building a vineyard from scratch is expensive and time-consuming, farming is all about managing risk, and organics are not generally known as a moneymaker. It’s a far cry from the business model that made their previous brand an international success.

Kim Crawford: The Man Behind The Brand
Early on November 1, New Zealander Erica Crawford enthusiastically tweets her Twitter followers, telling them that today, at last, is bottling day for the new organic .
Loveblock is her husband Kims first new product, other than contract deals, since leaving the company which owns his trademark name, and it has been years in the making. There is reason for her excitement.
Within days, however, she has deleted the message. When youve sold your name for close to 60 million New Zealand dollars , it pays to be careful how you use it: legally, under the terms of the nearly 10-year-old deal, neither of the Crawfords can promote their links with any other wine. But with the explosion of social media, its easy to slip up when your name is no longer just your own, but rather someone elses business.
In 2003, when the Crawfords sold their brand to Canadian wine giant Vincor it created ripples of interest. Not because wine company sales were rare in New Zealand after all, Wither Hills had gone to Lion Nathan, and Montana to Allied Domecq but because millions had been paid purely for the name, with no physical assets such as a vineyard or buildings. About NZ$18 million was exchanged up front, with the balance contained in an earn-out clause over the five years the Crawfords remained in the business to drive up sales and exports.
So why did the Crawfords sell their company to Vincor in 2003?
