Riesling is grown all over the world. In Germany, where it is most famously produced, Mosel Riesling is widely knownthough German Riesling is made in other regions too, like Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Rheingau, and Nahe. In France, Alsace Riesling is the most famous. Austrian Riesling tends to be made in a much dryer style, and excellent versions can also be found in Australia, New Zealand, California, Washington State, New Yorks Finger Lakes, and beyond.
How Do I Know My Riesling Is Bad
When white wine gets too old or is open for too long, it takes on an unpleasant nutty or Sherry-like character. Other flaws can affect Riesling, like volatile acidity, which will make the wine smell like nail polish remover. If it smells off in any way, your best bet is to avoid it and move on to another great bottle of Riesling.

Does Riesling Go Bad
All wine eventually goes bad. Unless you have a specific temperature-controlled cellar or wine fridge, we recommend opening your bottle of Riesling sooner rather than later. But properly stored, Riesling from a top producer and made in a great vintage can age for decades. Once you open the bottle, no matter who made the wine or how much it costs, you really should finish it within two or three days, maximum.

A sommelier who is paralyzed turned his love of wine into an accessible wine store in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City. CeFaan Kim has more on his story.
HELL’S KITCHEN, Manhattan — Wine can be inaccessible for many reasons including price, allergens and age restrictions. But one former sommelier from Hell’s Kitchen is bringing wine to a whole new world.
Through his paralysis and the pandemic, he created an accessible wine store.
When it comes to wine, hardly anything is more vital than the roots of the grapevine itself. As a sommelier, Yannick Benjamin knows that better than most. His own roots in wine run deep.
Benjamin’s mother is from Bordeaux, a region considered to be a wine capital of the world in France known for its hillsides and vineyards. Benjamin’s father worked in another wine capital, the restaurant industry.
“I remember visiting a winery at the age of 13 in Bordeaux, and I remember that distinctive smell and the beauty of it all,” Benjamin said.
He turned his love of wine into a career.
But at the age of 25, he was paralyzed after a car accident, and he was forced to reassess his career path.
“”How am I going to work around the restaurant as a sommelier, as a waiter, as a manager? Because it’s physically demanding,” Benjamin said.
But his paralysis did not slow him down.
“I always say the obstacle is the way and through tragedy you can, it really forces you to think outside the box,” he said.

Pennsylvania Raising Prices At Wine Liquor Stores For 2023
ALTOONA, Pa. As prices have been going up for everything from gasoline to eggs, another price hike is about to hit your wallets in Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board will be raising prices on various items across the state stores beginning January 15. The 4% increase will hit more than 3,500 products being sold, the PLCB said.
This price hike follows a recent trend for 2023 after tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the PA gas tax both increased with the new year.
While it sounds like 3,500 products is a lot because it is theres plenty that wont see a price hike, including special orders and clearance items.
Exceptions to this price increase include:
- Roughly 5,600 one-time buys
- 2,700 items on clearance
- 100 PA Proud items in 10 or fewer Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores
- Special Order products
- 397 items on sale in the month of January, which will remain on sale, then undergo the same price increase on each items regular pricing effective January 30.
In a statement, a spokesperson with the PLCB said the following:
These increases will allow the PLCB to generate revenues needed to offset annual 8% increases in operating costs over the last four years, plus projected cost increases in the current year, related to personnel, distribution, leases, and credit card fees, among others.
The PLCB said that other than passing along vendor increases, this is the first time since 2019 that theyve opted to increase prices overall like this.

I grew up in a family of social drinkers. My parents had cocktail parties. We had wine with fine meals. And on vacations we tried the local mixed drinks. The best way to describe the view was continental. That means I was allowed to have a drink before I was 21. I became interested in wine, beer and liquor not as a way to gain a buzz, but for how they enhanced the flavors of the foods I was enjoying with them. I went to lots of tastings with my parents and my husband as I grew older. I learned that they were an excellent way to explore new cultures and learn what I liked and didnt want to drink with my meals. Beverage tastings are now happening at many local liquor stores, in tasting rooms and on the local part of the Tennessee Whisky Trail.

Riesling wine tastes of flavors across a whole spectrum of fruits and spices. Citrus fruit is standard, as are autumn orchard fruits like apples and pears. What Are The Different Kinds Of Riesling
When it comes to Riesling, notable regions and styles abound. In Germany, its safe to assume that a bottle of Riesling will have some hint of sweetness unless the label says trocken, which means dry. Among the off-dry styles in Germany are, in increasing order of ripeness and sweetness: Riesling Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, and Eiswein. Eiswein is a late harvest Riesling whose berries have been allowed to frost over just before picking, which increases the ratio of sugar to water when theyre crushed. In Australia, most Riesling is made in a dryer style. For Riesling from elsewhere in the world, its best to ask your favorite salesperson or sommelier, though some back labels of Riesling now include a sweetness scale, which will give you an idea of how sweet it is. The best of them, no matter where they come from, will have enough mouthwatering acidity to balance out any residual sugar. As for how much youll have to spend, Riesling price varies, but in general, it remains one of the great values of the wine world.
