Francis Ford Coppola has taken time off from one big projectthe filming of his new movie, Youth Without Youth, set in Romaniaand is on to the next.
Tonight, the filmmaker-turned-vintner will celebrate his 67th birthday and introduce his new winery, located at the former Chateau Souverain facility in Geyserville, by hosting a party for 2,000 Sonomans.
The yet-to-be-named winery will be the alter ego of his Rubicon Estate in Napa Valley. While Rubicon pays tribute to the rich heritage of Inglenook, one of Napas legendary estates, the new winery in Sonoma will carry a simpler message about celebrating life.
Im a movie director, so I have to have a theme, Coppola said in an interview on Thursday. The theme for the Sonoma property is life. I want to create a happy Italian family feeling.
The winery, which is being remodeled, is intended to be a tourist destination in scenic Alexander Valley, with a restaurant and tasting room. The featured wines, which are distributed nationally, will be the Francis Coppola Diamond Series of varietals, Rosso and Bianco, Sofia sparkling wines and a Directors Reserve. The winery will also house much of the film memorabilia once displayed at Rubicon, including costumes and props from Coppolas movies, such as The Godfather, Bram Stokers Dracula and Tucker.
I never intended to have a Hollywood museum at what I still call Inglenook, said Coppola. My goal is to do what Inglenook would have done if it hadnt been separated.

Between The Godfather And Apocalypse Now Coppola Made Wine
In 1972, Coppola directed The Godfather, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1973. He directed the sequel in 1974, and the following year he acquired the Niebaum Estate in the Napa Valley, where the family continues to make wine to this day. He filed for a winery license in 1978 and, in 1979, the Coppola family wine business began under the Niebaum-Coppola name. That same year, Apocalypse Now was released, winning Coppola the Academy Award for Best Director in 1980. The Francis Ford Coppola Winery brand, however, wasnt established until July of 2010.
Director and vintner Francis Ford Coppola and a partner acquired one of the most sought-after vineyards in Napa Valley, paying a reported $31.5 million for the J.J. Cohn Vineyard, in Rutherford.
Coppola the famous filmmaker who owns Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery, also in Rutherford won a bidding war that reportedly started at $24 million and that attracted offers from some of Napas largest wine companies.
The high-priced bidding cooled speculation that Napa Valley vineyard prices might soften given the current economic climate.
The Cohn property encompassed about 84 acres of vineyard land and a large house. Coppolas partner in the deal, Bret Lopez, who is one of the Cohn family heirs, retained the home and 24 acres.

How Many Guests Can Enjoy Each Cabine Reservation
Each Cabine reservation is for the use of up to four guests. This includes all children and adults, even if not everyone will be swimming.
Additional adult passes are not available for guests ages 14 and older. For each Cabine reservation, up to two additional children or infant pool passes can be reserved, for an additional cost. If you would like to add up to two children or infant pool passes to your Cabine reservation, you can inquire about availability by emailing in advance of your pool day. Please note that these added children pool passes do not come with lounge chairs or additional space.
How Many Cabines Can My Group Reserve
To preserve the experience for all guests, each party or group may reserve up to a total of two Cabines. This includes Cabine reservations under one or multiple names. Please note that we reserve the right to cancel your Cabines at any time, should one group or party reserve more than two Cabines on any one day.

Access to the pool experience is available exclusively through Cabine reservations. Each Cabine comes equipped with a private shower, space to change, and towels for day use. Cabine packages also include up to four pool passes, use of four lounge chairs, and a deck of playing cards. When all the swimming and relaxing makes you hungry, enjoy ordering food and drinks, available throughout the day, from the Pool Cafe. Please note that individual pool passes are unavailable for day use.
The pool passes included in your Cabine reservation allow access to our pool area, swimming pool, and amenities for up to four guests, including children and infants of all ages. Your four lounge chairs will be selected for you in advance of your visit and will be in the same general area of each other. If you have a preference of where your lounge chairs are located on the deck, please reach out to us in advance by emailing so we may note this on the reservation. While we will do our best to accomodate your request, we cannot guarantee that it will be possible.
