Where Do Calories Come From In Wine

FitVine Wine Cabernet Sauvignon Review for Friends and Fitness by FBJ Fit

Unlike most packaged food and drinks, bottles of wine are not required to include nutrition facts, including the number of calories per serving. So, are there calories in wine? Of course! But dont stress we will dissect what makes up the calories in a glass of wine.

The two primary components that make up the calories in wine are alcohol and carbohydrates from residual sugars. Alcohol has 7 calories per gram and carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram. This means the alcohol content of wine contributes more to the total calories than carbohydrates.

Calories In Sparkling Wine

Dont forget about sparkling wine! Effervescent wines range from completely dry, or Brut Nature, to sweet, or Doux. Depending on the amount of added sugar, the calories in your sparkling wine will vary. A dry Champagne with no added sugars can have as few as 90 calories, whereas a sweet Champagne could have 170 calories.

  • Sparkling wines: 90170 calories

Heres a general guide to the average calories in wine by type for a 5-ounce pour :

Low-carb alcoholic drinks like vodka and tequila are fine in small amounts on the ketogenic diet, but what about wine? For all you wine lovers out there, this article should clear up everything you need to know about keto wine.

Most wines have a high sugar content and will increase your insulin and blood sugar levels. But there are some keto-friendly wines you can drink and maintain ketosis.

Calories In Riesling Wine

Riesling wine has an average of 23 calories per ounce. Riesling is one of the lightest wines on the market. A single glass would only be 115 calories. That’s 5 calories fewer than the average white wine and 10 fewer than a comparable red wine. At 575 calories in a 750mL bottle, we wouldn’t feel bad having multiple glasses with a riesling.

Riesling is probably the single best wine to choose if you’re concerned at all about the calories in wine.

How Much Should We Drink On Keto

Low Sugar Cabernet Sauvignon

Most short-term, in-depth keto diets do not recommend drinking alcohol at all.

That said, if youre working on a longer-term nutrition lifestyle change, your best bet is likely the moderation model:

  • No more than 2 drinks per day for men*
  • No more than 1 drink per day for women*

The funny thing about alcohol is that we digest it very differently than other calories. Part of the effort happens with these handy little enzymes called alcohol dehydrogenase. Enzymes help chemically process alcohol calories through our liver, stomach, and kidneys. So, were still not sure if we burn alcohol calories as efficiently as other calories.

In case youre wondering: The reason why women cant drink as much is because women have than men. Its a shame, but also a fact.

*As we all well know, everyones physiology is different and more! Talk to a doctor or nutritionist about your unique situation.

Last Word: Drink Wine Even If Its Folly

If youre seriously committing to the keto thing, you might want to stop drinking altogether while your body adjusts. After this process, you might be able to start adding dry wines back into your diet.

Whats life without living a little?

After taking a deep dive into the keto diet and learning from others, we did notice a trend: the people who stick to a diet and exercise regime are the ones who get results. So, if we learned anything from this whole process, its that doing the work will get you the results you want.

You can do it. Salut!

Does Fitvine Have Less Sugar

In our process, tannins, sugars, and histamines are removed more effectively. Sugar content in our wines is less than 1 gram per liter or less than 0 grams. Five ounces of sugar equals nine grams of sugar. Compared to the top 10 wine brands in the US, our wines have less sugar per bottle than they do in one 5oz glass.

Cupcake Lighthearted Pinot Grigio

California-based Cupcake Vineyards is well-known for producing award-winning wines from established regions at surprisingly reasonable prices. In 2020, the company introduced Cupcake Lighthearted, a collection of low-calorie, low-carb wines with less than one gram of sugar per five-ounce serving. The collection has a little something for everyone, including chardonnay, pinot noir, pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc and rosé.

For me, the Pinot Grigio was love at first sip. With zesty lemon notes and a clean finish, its a food-friendly wine you can enjoy anytime. Better yet, thanks to the modest alcohol volume of 8 percent, you wont wake up with a headache after downing a couple of glasses.

How Many Calories Are In Your Wine

Sipping on sauvignon blanc or enjoying a glass of red with dinner can be a nice way to unwind after a hectic day. While drinking wine can provide some health benefits, such as increasing your good cholesterol and reducing your odds of heart disease, alcohol also delivers empty calories and not many nutrients, which can eventually cause weight gain, obesity, and diabetes.

The key with drinking is doing so in moderation. Moderate drinking is defined as having one drink thats 5 ounces of wine per day for women and two for men.

Plus, you want to choose a drink that wont break the calorie bank. As a rule of thumb, white wines tend to be lower in calories than reds. Also, make sure your wine has a lower alcohol by volume percentage, ideally of 11% or less. The higher the ABV, the higher the calorie count. Check out the chart below to see how your favorite wine stacks up.

Taste Test : Skinnygirl

Fit Vine Cabernet Sauvignon Review!!

Last up was Skinnygirls pinot grigio, which comes in at 100 calories per 5-ounce pour. Calories are listed on the bottle for this one too, which seems like it should be standard for anything advertising its calorie content, yes?

Out of the three, we found this to be the smoothest and it took the top spot for three of us, though FitVine wasnt far behind. Worth buying? Sure! But just because it tastes good. Honestly, at 100 calories a glass, youre not saving enough by drinking it if you dont really like it. A bottle costs about $16.

How Many Calories In White Wine

White wine has an average of 24 calories per ounce. This number is only slightly lower than that of red wine. This is because there is such a broad spectrum of white wines. A wine like a riesling will come in below average but another white like a sweet dessert wine will be far above it. Its important to check both the ABV and sugar content in a white wine to understand where it falls on the spectrum. Any added sugar will add up quickly.

White wine is also perfect for making slushies. So grab that low-calorie white, freeze the wine, and get ready for a delicious treat that doesnt break your diet.

Thrive Market Wine Prices

Low

Both Thrive Market and FitVine are affordably priced. But to compare total pricing accurately, you have to consider shipping costs.

At Thrive Market its free if you order $79 or more in wine alone . Thrive Market also has an annual membership fee, but amortized across all your wine purchases, it would only add a nominal amount.

FitVine provides free shipping if you order 12 or more bottles at once. Even at the cheapest price of $15.99 that totals $191.88, so its not going to be as affordable as Thrive Market on the shipping front.

All that is moot if you find it at your local wine store of course.

What My Friends Said

My wine score did not match up with my friends this time around, which makes sense because everyone has different wine preferences! Heres what my friends thought of the wine we sipped

Chardonney

Chardonnay is my go to wine, always. This is eh. It has the after toungue tingle of a normal chardonnay, but tastes lighter. I would chose to drink this in the beach, pool or watching the Bachelorette alone, but not at a house party or nice restaurant.

Pinot Noir

A good, solid red. Id drink this anywhere, anytime.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Stronger tannins throughout. Steak.

Sauvignon Blanc

Tastes more like wine than the chard. I would invite this wine to a house party and would chose it if it was on a happy hour menu on a patio.

Other Feedback

If I were going to a party and wanted to bring a bottle, I would not be embarrassed to bring either of the reds.

Given that these are all diet wines or healthy winesthat changes the perspective. If I was in the mood to drink, or was day drinking all day, FitVine here I come. In other words, its good.

I loved the reds, on target as far as the taste I expect from a Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. The whites struck me as lighter versions of what I expected, but Im a Pinot Grigio drinker so wasnt surprised when I didnt gravitate as much towards the whites the Chardonney and Sauvignon Blanc. Id say fewer calories and less sugar, the reds are a good bet.

Calories In Merlot Wine

Merlot wine has an average of 24 calories per ounce. Somewhat surprising for a red, merlot can actually have fewer calories than a number of white wines. Like chardonnay, merlot turns out to be 120 calories a glass and 600 calories a bottle. If you are a lover of red wines, merlot is one of the best for sticking within a certain calorie count. Dont think youll have to give up all red wine for your diet.

The More Alcohol The More Calories

The way to reduce calories in wine is to lower the amount of alcohol, according to Bershaw. Unless we are talking about overtly sweet wines, alcohol content is by far the largest driver of calories, he said.

But this creates a bit of mystery. FitVines ABV ranges from 13.4% to 13.9%, similar to other wines, according to Bershaw. He is unsure why FitVines reduced-calorie wines are lower in calories than other wines with a similar alcohol and sugar content.

When Bershaw did a calculation for a lower-alcohol Riesling, it was slightly lower in calories than FitVines wines because of the lower ethanol content. In other words, there may be other lower-calorie wines out there, but they just may not be marketed as such, he explained.

Censes Sauvignon Blanc, the product of a partnership between Truett Hurst Wineries and Weight Watchers, is made using an exclusive technology that offers consumers a wine with an ABV of 9.6% and only 85 calories per 5-ounce glass . In essence, we can capture the alcohol and take what percentage out we want, but we keep the aromas and essences and mouthfeel of a full alcohol wine, said Jason J. Strobbe, Truett Hursts executive vice president. He said the company will be releasing a lower-calorie rosé in February.

Bellissima Zero Sugar Sparkling White

Even a dry prosecco can pack 17-32 grams of sugar per liter, which is almost a teaspoon per glass. But Bellisima, which happens to be legendary supermodel Christie Brinkleys wine brand, developed a state-of-the-art technique to eliminate all the sugar from their sparkling wine without compromising the taste.

This sparkling wine, which is made from 100 percent glera grapes from the Treviso-Veneto region of Italy, is vegan, organic, carb-free and only 92 calories per serving yet its velvety smooth and perfectly balanced. Its also frothier and lighter than your typical champagne, thanks to lower pressure used during the carbonation process. Sip it straight or use it as a base for mimosas at brunch.

How Many Calories In Rose Wine

Rose wine has an average of 25 calories per ounce. Though rosé is not a full-bodied red wine, it still has a comparable amount of calories. Rosé comes in a spectrum of colors from amber to purple. The darker colors are more likely to have a higher calorie count. If you love rosé but are trying to keep the calories low, we recommend sticking to the lighter hues.

What We Learned On Our Hunt For Keto Wines

Bad News: youre not going to see RS listed on the label.

The US has no labeling requirements for nutrition, so no one adds it. Additionally, we found searching for this information online complicated.

It took me multiple back-and-forth emails to squeeze this information out of one producer.

Good News: Many wines will fit the bill! On our searches, we discovered a few key clues:

  • Value-driven dry wines tend to have more residual sugar to improve the taste. Weve seen value wines range from about 530 g/L of residual sugar.
  • Generally speaking, white and rosé wines often feature some level of residual sugar. Sweetness in white and rosé wines helps counterbalance acidity. So, to be safe, you can anticipate 10 g/L or 1.5 g carbs per serving.
  • European wines tend to prioritize dryness. So you might try more , , , , or even that compelling listed above!
  • Sparkling wines marked with Brut, Extra Brut, or Brut Nature typically have the lowest amounts of residual sugar. Expect 1.5g carbs per glass or less. Heres a fun for more information.
  • Use search terms like fact sheet, tech sheet, rs, or even pH to search for a specific wines technical information quickly.
  • What Wines To Avoid

Wines with higher alcohol levels include varieties like , , , and You cant blame them for it. Theyre naturally high in sugar.
