Just went to Napa and purchased the pass for $40. If you purchase, contact Priority Wine Pass and let them know your dates of travel, where you are staying, your wine and price preferences and they will provide you with a suggested itinerary that will utilize the card. We took some of their suggestions and also went out on our own. We were pleasantly surprised to find some wineries offered a larger discount than was noted by Priority Wine Pass. Over two days and 6 wineries, by utilizing the pass we saved $185 in tasting fees .
There is no doubt that with the increase price of tastings, especially in Napa, any discounts available help a traveler to this area. I purchased the Priority Wine Pass but I had also downloaded a phone app. The problem I had with app was that in order to get the two for one tastings you had to “LIKE” the winery on Facebook or Twitter. The Priority Wine Pass is just that – a card you carry with you. The list of wineries was posted on their web site so I was able to see the wineries before purchasing plus I found that they partner with many not on the list. Also found by communicating with Local Wally that he actually set up an itinerary for my group each day incorporating the two for ones so we weren’t going from one end of Sonoma and then over to Napa. This planning for us was priceless…well worth $40 per couple.

Saving money in Napa starts with a realistic approach to picking wineries. I know, youre all excited about coming here and googling best wineries in Napa and now have a long list of wineries you want to visit. And I bet all of your friends have been telling you about wineries you cant miss. Well I hate to break it to you but this route is a disaster if you hope to do Napa on a budget. Lets start again.
First, you need to go through your list of possible wineries and rank them. You can only squeeze in four, maybe five wineries in a day so be highly selective which wineries make your list.
Then go to this list – these are the discount deals on the Priority Wine Pass. Youll find a lot of two for one offers here which will save you a ton of money. Deals and coupons in Napa are nearly all gone but the Priority Wine Pass will still save you about a hundred bucks a day
Best Way To Bring Wine Home
I’ve read some previous posts and just wanted to confirm what I think I heard…sounds like the easiest way to get wine home is to purchase a shipping carton from one of the wineries and check the wine as luggage. Is this still the best approach in most circumstances? Any specific place best for purchasing the shipping carton? Thanks in advance for your feedback!
It all depends in how much wine you are shipping. If its several bottles and weight is less than 50 pounds then I think checking the wine as baggage is a good idea. Last year we purchased 5 cases so luggage was not a viable option. Buffalo shipping company has been touted as the best. I would imagine they had shipping cartons there. We bought a lot of wine at Vintners collective in Napa and they shipped our other bottles.

I was thinking of doing the same things. We are probably going to buy 1-2 cases while we are out there. However, I didn’t think about the weight of 12 bottles of wines. I know most airlines charge $75 if the weight is over 50 lbs. Anybody know if 12 bottles are over 50 lbs?

12 bottles of wine don’t weigh near 50 lbs , so shipping shouldn’t be an issue.
we just shipped 12 bottles at buffalo shipping and it cost $100. Just received it at home – perfect.
Buying the wine shipperat less than $10, and checking it as luggage is still the best method.
A bottle of 750ml wine weighs 2 1/2 pounds, or 36 pounds per case of 12.
The price will be closer to $50 per case.

Preparing For A Visit To Napa Valley Wineries
Now that you know a bit more about the region, including what makes it special, my Napa travel guide will help you learn a little more about what to expect during your travels.
Being that there are more than 400 wineries in the region, it can be hard to determine which ones to visit.
Generally, you will find two types of wineries. The first set has open tasting hours, where you can just walk in and taste . The second set of wineries require that you make an appointment. Some of these will still take walk-ins on slower days, but it is best to make an appointment if you really want to taste there.
Most wineries open around 10 a.m. and close around 5 p.m. Some open earlier and some stay open later, but this is what you can expect at most wineries.
On an average day, you can expect to visit about 4 to 5 wineries. This may not seem like much, but you’ll end up spending an hour or more at each location. I usually plan out my first two or three and then get recommendations from those places and others as I sample. It is fun to find new places!
How Long Is It Good For

Some states do not allow personal wine shipments. If wineries do not ship to NJ that may be the reason.
Suggestion – if you have an itinerary and you know which wineries you’ll be visiting, speak to your local wine merchant prior to your trip and find out if they carry that line of wines. If they do, they can almost certainly get the wines you fall in love with in Napa. Just be sure to write everything down – varietal, vintage, price, etc. Take some great photos of the winery and the bottles you fall in love with. Then, all you have to carry is a pen and paper. The wine merchant can often get you a better deal than if you had purchased then shipped the wine. Then celebrate by opening the wine while viewing your photos!

I live in NJ and when we were in Napa last March we found that some wineries could ship to us and some could not – ??? For those who could not, they were more than happy to provide us with the packing materials so we could check the box as luggage. Some wineries who could not ship to us were able to find out if they distribute in NJ and gave us the name of their distributor. When we got home we were able to use this info in our local wine store to find what we were looking for. Hope this helps!

If you want to drive, you can rent a car or take a shuttle from both SFO and OAK to Napa. If you take a shuttle, you will avoid Bay Area traffic and then you can rent a car when you arrive in Napa.
You can also take public transit from both SFO and OAK. It will take some time and you will have several transfers, but it is a lot less expensive than the shuttle or renting a car.

How To Get Around
The easiest way to get around Napa Valley is by car. The caveat here is that you do need a designated driver if you plan to do some wine tasting. It is a busy district with a lot of other drivers , so you need to make sure your driver is alert and sober.
You can also take public transit. This will get you to some of the best wineries in the region. It will take you a bit more time but is a safe option for those that do not have a designated driver.

Napa Valley is about 40 minutes east of Sonoma and the Pacific Ocean, and its daytime temperatures climb much higher than foggy Coastal California. Daytime especially in the summer can get to over 100 degrees, so wear something breathable and comfortable!

There are so many wineries to choose from you should try to experience a variety. Dont go to all well-known wineries or all small ones. Domaine Chandon is a well-known winery and is located near the town of Yountville. I enjoyed the tasting there, but I have also enjoyed going to small wineries such as Whetstone. The two have very different experiences and it is nice to try both.

No, not every winery accepts the Priority WIne Pass but enough do to make it worth your while. If there are wineries you really want to visit but who offer no discounts then just go – youll save enough money at the other wineries to justify paying full price. And be wary of other websites claiming to have deals at Mondavi, Mumm, Domaine Chandon, or Castello di Amorosa. There are plenty of fake coupon sites out there that advertise these deals just to get you to click – some even make you pay first, only to find out later that the deal expired. Not cool.

What Should I Eat In Napa
I typically practice intermittent fasting, but I always eat breakfast before wine tasting. Even if youre spitting, youll get worn down quickly without food. Plan time for lunch and bring snacks in the car.
Youll want carbs, healthy fats, nutrients, and lots of water. I like to pack nuts, fruit, baguette, and plenty of water in a reusable water bottle. You can grab a sandwich off Highway-29 at Oakville Grocery, just north of the Opus One winery, and bring it along with you.
