Best California: 2014 Heitz Cellar Marthas Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

How Cabernet Sauvignon Is Made

Region: Oakville, Napa Valley, California | ABV: 14.5% | Tasting Notes: Bay leaf, Cedar, Red currant

Heitz Cellar is a jewel among Napa Valley wine producers, and Marthas Vineyard cabernet is their flagship bottle. Aged five years in French Limousin oak barrels, this wine is made with intensely purple grape berries from an exclusive Oakville vineyard situated within its unique micro-climatemeaning this is one exemplary wine. Every vintage since 1966 is coveted by collectors, but 2014 was a particularly good year for this cabernet.

Positively a classic with true cabernet herbal aromas of bay leaf, cedar, mint, and flavors of raspberry, red currant, sassafras, dark chocolate and eucalyptus. Sweet, svelte tannins find a long, dry finish supported by mouthwatering acidity. Best of all, you could be drinking this and enjoying it 50 years from now!

Best Washington: Woodward Canyon Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon

courtesy of woodwardcanyon.com

Region: Washington | ABV: 14.5% | Tasting Notes: Black cherry, Menthol, Baking spices

Washington State might seem like an odd place to cultivate a big, rich, warmth-loving red grape like cabernetafter all, isnt Seattle rainy about ten months out of the year? Maybe so, but once you get east of the Cascade mountain range, the climate is considerably drier and sunnier, yielding one of the nations premier growing regions for hearty reds.

Only the second winery to be established in Washingtons prolific Walla Walla Valley, family-run Woodward Canyon has been churning out delicious reds since 1981, and their Artist Series cabernet is a blend of grapes sourced from some of the most highly regarded vineyards in the entire state, including the lengendary Sagemoor Vineyard. The result is a silky, medium- to full-bodied wine bursting with notes of ripe black cherry, blueberry, cassis, warm baking spices, cedar, black pepper, menthol, and cocoa, says Claire Coppi, a Certified Sommelier and a cast member on SOMM TV. Wait about five years before opening, as the wine benefits highly from a little time to integrate in the bottle.

What Is The Wine Region Of Lodi Famous For

The region of Lodi is famous for its powerful Cabernet Sauvignon.

This tight-knit wine region is nestled between San Francisco Bay and the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is considered to be the next up-and-coming region of the States, as several innovative winemaking techniques and wines are emerging here.

The regions real focus is the ability to produce cost-effective wines, with 80% of the vines being Cabernet Sauvignon. However, the region also produces interesting expressions of Chardonnay, Viognier, Albariño, Zinfandel and Grenache.

For Lodi to produce grapes with such success, they are reliant on the warm summers and the cooling effect that the Delta offers their vineyards. This key combination of warm sun and a cooling breeze, ensures perfect ripening of their grapes, without losing any refreshing acidity.

This is classic Pomerol here. Full of power but driven by fruit, it opens with blackberry and black cherry. Theres floral notes as well, along with cassis, graphite and spice from the 50% new oak. Youll find refinement, elegance and grace in the wine, one that opens up nicely with a bit of air. This is that rare Bordeaux that can be enjoyed now, but will certainly age wonderfully for up to two decades. Check out Jeb Dunnucks beautifully written review below.

Pure, modern notes of cassis, spicy oak, leaf pencil, and dried violets emerge from the 2019 Château Tour Maillet . Medium to full-bodied, this beauty has a wonderfully pure, elegant texture, nicely integrated acidity, and outstanding length. Its in the same class as the 2018 and is a beautiful wine in the making.

I W Harper Cabernet Cask Reserve Bourbon

Tailor Made Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Kentucky- Finished in Cabernet Sauvignon Casks and then aged for a second time in luxury Cabernet casks. The result is a wonderfully complex bourbon with flavorful bursts of toasted vanilla, ripe fruit and spice, for an exceptionally clean, lingering, smooth finish and a rich character.

2 oz.

Muddle sugar and 1 orange peel in glass. Add bitters and bourbon. Stir well. Add ice cubes and stir again. Garnish with fresh orange peel.

Bourbon, Americas native spirit, traces its heritage to immigrants who brought their whiskey-making skills to the American colonies in the 18th century. Rye was the crop of choice for them, because it was easier to establish than the traditional barley. But when settlers pushed west to Kentucky, which had gained a reputation for fertile soil and pure spring waters, corn became the base material for their whiskey, and it established a style that Kentucky could call its own.

Although its historically affiliated with Kentucky, Bourbon today may be made anywhere in the United States, so long as producers follow a recipe and process that is set by law.

A traditional method sparkling wine made with Red Mountain fruit is not something you stumble across every day, but I’m glad I did. There are the aromas of straw, strawberries, dried rose petals and vanilla biscotti. The wine is dry, with a frothy mousse and flavors like strawberry Jell-O and a mildly biter note resembling tonic water. Michael Alberty

Geneseo Performer Gets Back Into The Habit At Richmond

The star of the RHP show is Babbitt as Don, who is a world-weary, confident narrator, and my favorite parts of the play are his encounters with a variety of oddball characters. The best among these multiple roles is played by Patrick Kelley including a cynical Iowa professor in the first act and a friendly farmer in the center of the country in the second act.

It seemed so fitting for the Barn Theatre to host this play in that second scene, with Kelley in his overalls and John Deere cap, with his wife Judy, played by Janet VanderSchaaf. Its a tender, touching reflection on the profound influence of fathers.

Another standout scene is in the first half, when Faust and Babbitt meet a Civil War re-enactor played by Julian Totton. Faust is playfully into the role-playing of a battle with a bayonet and Babbitt is super embarrassed.

As Sis, Leslie Day has an amazing energy, and consistently nails the frustrations of being a little kid and not getting what you want. Not sure what her age is supposed to be in flashbacks, but she is both tremendously perky and cute in her exuberance, and often supremely annoying in her complaining and fighting with her brother and parents.

More an issue with the play itself, I felt the flashbacks were excessive and redundant. Toward the end, when Kobre as Mom explodes at the kids, at her wits end, I completely empathized with her.

The solid, versatile ensemble includes Vicky Jones, Kevin Keck and Matthew McConville.

Harmonious Stunner: 2017 Ehret Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley

Greg Martellotto|03 October, 2022

After establishing Ehret Family Winery with his wife Susan, Pierre Ehret began another career: race car driving. Throughout his driving career, Pierre has driven world-class Porsches and Ferraris in over 130 races, which we think is an awful lot of circles to drive in.

Theres a direct correlation between the focus it takes to control a racecar at high speed while making hairpin turns with the focus it takes to grow quality grapes vintage after vintage and craft them into consistently award-winning wines. That correlation is starting with the best materials. In race car driving, its the car. In winemaking, its the grapes. The grapes for the 2017 Ehret Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon come from Knights Valley, an optimal site for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

The location of Erhrets Bavarian Lion Vineyards is tailor-made for Bordeaux varieties. The 400 to 800 feet in elevation vineyards in Knights Valleyone of Sonoma Countys warmest AVAsare blessed with well-drained, very gravelly, sandy loam soils. Warm, long sun-drenched growing days are counterbalanced by cool evenings. Grapes get ripe during the day and gain important acidity.

Our price, is just $49.99, over 25% off. And, you dont need a Porsche or Ferrari to race to the wine store for it. All you have to do is click.

Both these Valleys produce their own refined selection of wines but have vastly different climates, wine varieties and cultural influences.

Best Value: 2019 Substance Cabernet Sauvignon

courtesy of astorwines.com

Region: Columbia Valley, Washington | ABV: 14% | Tasting Notes: Blueberry, Violet, Pencil lead

Winemaker Charles Smith, a former band manager who spent the first few years of his wine career selling his bottles out of the back of a van, has been churning out quality Washington State wine since 1999. Within fifteen years of his first vintage, he had been named Winemaker of the Year by both Wine Enthusiast and Food & Wine, and his recognizable black-and-white labels were gracing shelves in all fifty states and a couple dozen countries abroad.

Substance, one of his newest lines, comprises single-variety wines that are fermented naturally and bottled unfiltered and unfined. The 2019 Cs cabernet sauvignon is already making fans with its bold and pleasing characteristics of dark fruit, violet, pipe tobacco, and pencil lead, but the wine is sturdy enough that it should continue to evolve and add finesse over the next decade at minimum. Nothing wrong with popping it on a random weeknight, however with its sub-$20 price tag, its the type of indulgence you can come back to again and again.

The Aldinger family has been in the grape growing/wine making business near Stuttgart in the Württemberg region of southwest Germany since 1492. Hansjorg and Matthias Aldinger are now running the family business and are sticking to the devotion to nature that generations before them had shown. This can be seen even in the name of this wine, Feldhase, meaning hare. As told by the Aldinger brothers We listen carefully to the needs of our soil, vines and skies. Each vineyard and each vintage must be accepted on its own unique merits.. Youll find this same focus on nature in their 2020 Trollinger.

Trollinger is not a common grape for most. Unless you regularly enjoy the light red from Germany or its northern Italian Alto Adige version Schiava/Vernatsch, you can easily think a Troillinger-based wine could be a number of different grapes, just ask our staff. When I first tried Feldhase, I thought it could be a real crowd-pleaser while also being something fun and different for our customers to enjoy. When first sampling my co-workers on it, none of them could guess what the grape was. Kevin asked if it was Blaufrankisch, Samantha thought maybe a light Cabernet Franc, Jessica wondered if it was some type of Cinsault/Carignan blend. Even Randy was stumped on what the grape was, but every single person who tried it really enjoyed the flavor profile whether they knew what it was made from or not.

From its ancestral homeland in southwest France, to the sun-drenched vineyards of California and Washington, to emerging footholds in Tuscany, Australia, and South Africa, cabernet sauvignon stakes a fair claim as the most beloved wine grape in the world. A recent study revealed that its now the worlds most widely-planted grape variety, up from fourth place as recently as 1990 .

Besides consumer preference shifting toward so-called varietal wines, another cause for cabernet sauvignons meteoric rise is that its relatively easy to grow the grape berries are known for their thick skin and natural ability to flourish in a wide range of climates. More important than its ease of cultivation, however, is the fact that cabernet sauvignon is simply delicious. Bold and sturdy, with satisfying dark fruit flavors and big tannic character, its a crowd-pleasing favorite thats almost never absent from a restaurant wine list .
