Best Ros: Meinklang Pinot Noir Frizzante Ros

Region: Austria | ABV: 10.5% | Tasting Notes: Red berry, herbal spice

In the U.S., this bottle is labeled Frizzante Rosé, and in other markets, you’ll find it as Prosa. Whatever you call it, you’re going to love the sparkling pink wine from Meinklang. It is straight out of the weingarten where the grapes are grown alongside other produce and native plants that promote biodiversity.

The Austrian farm boasts sustainable growing practices that are apparent in the crisp, clean taste of this particular rosé. Its made from pinot noir grapes that are aged in concrete eggs, which only adds to the intriguing story of this winemaker. The wine is mildly effervescent with soft fruit touched by a lovely acidity that will appeal to both red and white wine lovers. Surprisingly, its not too difficult to find, and, at under $20, it’s perfect for any occasion.

Region: South Africa | ABV: 14.2% | Tasting Notes: Dried orange peel, honey, floral, oak

Orange wine is unique to natural wine and has absolutely nothing to do with the citrus fruit. Instead, this style mashes white grapes and allows them to ferment with the skins and seeds for anywhere from a few days to a full year, and it may not include yeast. The process results in a sour, slightly nutty, gold-colored wine.

Wild, raw, and often organic, there is a growing interest in natural wines. The loosely defined term is used to describe a broad range of wines, the majority of which are made with minimal intervention from grapes grown in sustainable ways. Some use wild yeast, and many do not include the sulfites typically used in modern wine to stabilize and prevent further fermentation after bottling.

Also referred to as “raw” wine, it can be difficult to know which bottles to choose, and its not always clear on the label which wines fall into this category. Today, there are many exceptional natural wines available that encompass the various styles of wine.

Here are some of the best natural wines you can buy.

Region: Central Coast, California, USA | ABV: 13.8% | Tasting Notes: Cherry, black currant, vanilla, oak

If you’re a fan of merlot, the natural wine scene is limited in options. It’s not the most popular red grape in this style of winemaking, though it can be found. The solar-powered California winery Broadside is focused on maintaining a low-impact carbon footprint and offers its own take on the famous red.

    The Caverna Do Vinho Story

    How we discovered natural wine

We’re Leandro and Josefine, and we first discovered “natural” wine – a broad term for wines made with low-intervention methods – at a restaurant in Copenhagen in 2011. We were blown away. The flavours and colour of the wine had us from the first sip.

Equally exciting were the stories of these winemakers: Small, independent producers. Traditional winemaking methods. No pesticides or herbicides. In true partnership with the environment, the weather, and the soil.

The more we learned, the more we wanted to share our discoveries with other wine lovers.

In 2017, we moved from Swedent to Lisbon, originally intending to open a wine and tapas bar. At that time, there were a handful of winemakers in Portugal that could be called natural, but very, very few that used no sulfites.

We also discovered that many of our favourite natural wines – wines from Italy, Spain, France, and Austria – weren’t available in Portugal. Several winemakers we already knew and loved weren’t represented in Lisbon, and some had never had their wines available in Portugal at all! Our natural wine “mission” became clear.

Our goal: sharing natural wines with the world

Caverna do Vinho offers natural wines from small producers across Europe. We import, sell, and ship these outstanding low-intervention wines worldwide so people everywhere can enjoy them as much as we do.

We believe that wines produced this way just taste better. And that’s what really matters, isn’t it?

If you have a proclivity for sweet wines, moscato is an excellent choice. Though not numerous in the natural wine scene, it is available, and Can Sumoi Perfum is a great place to begin your adventure. A joint project of two winemakers from Spains Catalonia region, the grapevines are certified organic and biodynamically farmed.

This particular offering from the Penedés estate of Can Sumoi is a blend of moscatel, macabeo, and parellada grapes. Using spontaneous fermentation, the white wine is left nakedwithout sulfur, and unfined and unfilteredoffering a taste of pure moscato. Its perfumy, delicate, and has inviting fruit notes against a floral body. While it is sweet, its not cloying and even has a crisp dryness thats very enjoyable.

Region: North Coast, California, USA | ABV: 13.4% | Tasting Notes: Plum, blackberry, spice

Natural Wine From Vine To Glass

    Solara Organic Wines

As with everything else, natural wine have their loyal supporters and determined opponents. However, the truth is that more and more people are taking an interest in minimal intervention wine production. Many people thought it was just a fad, but it has become clear that more and more people are getting on board with additive-free wine. So what makes this type of wine so successful? To start with, we should explain exactly what natural wine is.

    What is natural wine?

Although Regulation no. 479/2008 of the European Community in Annex IV of Category of wine products defines wine as the product obtained exclusively from the total or partial alcoholic fermentation of fresh grapes, whether or not crushed, or of grape must, in practice there is an endless list of authorised wine products that can be added when making a wine. Many conventional wineries add ingredients like sulphurs, yeasts, enzymes and nutrients. Natural wines, on the other hand, want to be faithful to this statement of intent and are therefore made without additives.

So, just like when we ask for a natural orange juice, we expect a juice made purely from squeezed oranges, with no sweeteners, no added vitamin B, colouring or preservatives, when we talk about natural wines we mean wines made only with fermented grape must, and no artificial additives.

Is natural wine the same as organic or biodynamic wine?

Organic, biodynamic and natural wine all start with a respect for nature, but they are slightly different.

    How Is Natural Wine Made

The process of making natural wine differs slightly because each vintner will use a personalized approach. Generally, theyre made from sustainably grown grapes to ensure the most natural flavor. Theyre often fermented with wild or natural yeast instead of cultivated yeast, which adds a rustic touch to the wines taste. Additives and preservatives are avoided in fermentation and bottling , and the wine is left unfiltered, leading to a cloudier appearance. From stomping grapes to fermenting in clay pots or concrete eggs, some wineries go low-tech as well.

    Brush Up On The Terminology

Natural wines often include blends of different grapes and are made without added yeasts, sugars, or flavors, so the final product can taste different than more conventional wines made with the same grapes. Some natural wines may remind you of a cider, sour beer, or kombucha, while others will taste very similar to wines youve had before. As Joe Campanale has described it, Some natural wines are on the cloudy, funky, weirder spectrum and some are like crystalline and pure and precise and clean. All of which are fine terms to use while shopping in person.

You can also ask about terms like skin contact pét-nat and terroir . Note that some shops will include natural wines as well as organic and biodynamic options, which are not the same thing. Organic wines mean the grapes are grown organically, but these wines may still include additives, and biodynamic wine producers follow a specific set of farming practices.

Even if its a grape you recognize, Johannesen reminds customers that natural wines often let the winemakers preferences shine through. The interesting thing is that its sometimes less about the grape and more about the maker, she says. Its definitely a complex matrix, but we are all navigating it together. So when in doubt…

Why You Should Drink Natural Wine

Robert Joseph raises questions about “natural” wine

Weve already gone over the benefits of drinking natural wine and why you should drink natural, biodynamic and organic wine . But heres a quick recap that unfortunately applies to at least 95% of wine on the market:

    • Most wines, especially domestic wines, are highly processed and contain questionable additives and/or toxic pesticides and herbicides.
    • In fact, there are 76 chemicals and additives approved by the FDA for use in winemaking.
    • Standard modern wines are now much higher in alcohol, higher in sugar, and filled with questionable, if not downright harmful, chemicals and additives to improve texture, color, and flavor . Put another way: winemakers are trying to mask the low-quality grapes and winemaking techniques being used.
    • The U.S. government does not require wine labels to include nutritional information or ingredient lists. If you think theyre protecting you, think again!

From all my research, Ive learned that low alcohol, organic, biodynamic or natural wines are the ideal alcohol choice to maximize the health benefits of wine and minimize the negatives.

So where can you buy natural, organic, and biodynamic wine?

While you can absolutely head down to your local wine shop or grocery store and try to find organic, biodynamic and/or natural wines, its 2019 and we cant deny that we all love the ease of shopping online most of the time. Here are my top 5 favorite places to buy natural wine online, all at the convenience of your fingertips.
