CALIFORNIAS NORTH COAST

Rugged, often wild, with never-ending complexity, this unique growing region has long been home to advocates for familyfocused sustainable viticulture. A relatively mild Mediterranean climate with predictable heating and cooling cycles is overlaid on a mélange of well-drained volcanic and gravelly soils perfect for concentrating vine energy. Rolling hillsides and benchlands offer prime vineyard sites producing flavorful fruit with layers of agreeable acids and balanced tannins.

TASTE WITH THE WINEMAKER

Our Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon truly finds itself at home on any occasion. This wine is so versatile, I drink it year roundamong friends at a summer backyard barbeque or with family in front of a crackling fireplace. On the nose, this Cabernet Sauvignon presents vivid aromas of red cherry and blackberry accented by notes of warm cedar. I love the big, rich entry on this wine, as mouthfilling tannins deliver complex layers of black fruit, notably blackberry and black plum, with hints of roasted vanilla and mocha on the soft, round finish.

Hess Select North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon Usa California Wine Review

This was the year the fires hit California. It is important to be careful due to that but there were no notes of fire tain here. It is a well priced blend that is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petite Sirah, 7% Malbec, 5% Merlot, and 1% Syrah. The wine is ruby at the rim of the glass with core of purple. Mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cherries, cassis, char, and slight camphor. With air, slight cedar emerges. On the palate, this is soft and accessible. A hint of sweetness. Slightly drying tannins. A moderate finish. This is a very nice wine for immediate drinking. It works well on its own but will work great with burgers or ribs. Drink over the next few years.

Review: 2017 Hess Collection Chardonnay And Cabernet Sauvignon

Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Caves Gales

Heres a pair of wines from our friends at Napas Hess Collection a place you must visit if youre in the area!

2017 Hess Collection Chardonnay Napa Valley Oak and vanilla are in full effect in this chardonnay, though theyre dialed back enough to let some interesting fruit notes shine through, including pear, lemon, and quince. A somewhat doughy, coconut-heavy character influences the finish, with notes of perfumed white flowers impregnating the entire affair. Best with a light meal. B+ / $22

2017 Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Allomi Vineyard This is a chewy, jammy expression of cabernet, a berry-forward juice bomb that folds in notes of coconut, figs, and red rope licorice to make for an exuberant though not terribly subtle or nuanced experience. Fair enough as a by the glass offering, though I dont think that was the intent. B+ / $32

Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

This extravagantly textured and sumptuously ripe wine has soothing baked spice fragrances, delicate plum, and blackberry syrup flavors with a medium body. Moderate tannins supported by 11% Petite Sirah are very much coordinated and make for a smooth mouthfeel.

The Hess Collection was established by Swiss business visionary Donald Hess, who initially obtained vineyards on Mount Veeder in 1978 and started making wine under The Hess Collection mark in 1983. In 1986, he started to remodel of the memorable winery, initially built in 1903 by Colonel Theodore Gier. The winery opened to the general public in 1989. The Hess Collection has vineyards on Mount Veeder, alongside their Napa Valley home vineyards – Su’skol and Allomi in Napa Valley and Shirtail Creek Vineyard in Monterey. Every one of these vineyards is economically cultivated as per Donald’s philosophy.
