How To Calculate Alcohol For Macro Counting

Posted:September 15th, 2017Author: Lindsey Jenks, Founder & CEO

Alcohol is actually its own macronutrient, but for our macro counting purposes, it is tracked as a carb, fat or combination of both. To calculate macronutrients for alcohol, we need to know how many calories it contains.

To find this information, you can use the nutritional information listed on the label of beverage , our generic chart below, or you can usually find it on Google!

Use our Alcohol Calculator to calculate your drink and add it directly to your food log!
To Count Your Alcohol as a Carbohydrate:

Use the total number of calories in a drink divided by 4

Example:5 ounces of Red Zinfandel = 132 calories132 calories/4 = 33g Carbs

To Count Your Alcohol as a Fat:

Use the total number of calories in a drink divided by 9

Example:5 ounces of Red Zinfandel = 132 calories132 calories/9 = 15g Fat

To Count Your Alcohol as both a Carbohydrate and a Fat:

Use the a portion of the total number of calories in a drink divided by 4Use the remainder of the total number of calories in a drink divided by 9

Example:5 ounces of Red Zinfandel = 132 calories66 calories/4 = 16.5g Carbs66 calories/9 = 7g Fat

Why we use the formula

Alcohol is technically its own macronutrient and contains 7 calories per gram but because it isnt essential for survival its not typically mentioned with the other macros: protein, fat, and carbs.

Why you wont see a nutrition label on most alcoholic beverages

Always use the formula.

Don’t Miss: Does Red Wine Have Sugar And Carbs

Fitvine Wine Cabernet Sauvignon

Unsurprisingly, FitVine is a brand with a wide range of low-calorie wine options. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is a great choice for a low-calorie red wine because it’s a full-bodied and richly flavored wine without all the added sugar. It’s also low in sulfates, which can be very helpful if you have a wine allergy. Best of all, it’s still 12%-14% ABV, which is a good wine alcohol content, especially for a low-calorie option. This is definitely a red wine worth trying.

How Does Fitvine Work

The company was created by a group of friends with a commitment to creating flavorful wines that pair well with active lifestyles. These wines are made with pesticide-free grapes that provide a perfect full-ABV but clean drinking experience.& nbsp

Rich in flavor and made with an extended fermentation process, these wines are fermented to dry, lowering their overall sugar content. So if youre wondering, does FitVine have less sugar? The answer is a resounding yes.

Not only does this wine have less than one gram of sugar per liter or less than 0.09 grams of sugar per glass but its proprietary process enables the extraction of more tannins and beautiful colors.

There are all kinds of wines for you to choose from, too, so you dont have to sacrifice flavor for your health. Some of the most popular and best options include Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rose, Prosecco, Chardonnay, and Pinot Grigio.

Are you wondering, ok, but does FitVine have sulfites? the answer is yes, unfortunately but much less so than other brands of wine. In fact, these have fewer than 35 ppm reducing the potential for a nasty hangover!

Between the low levels of sulfites and the ultra-low sugar content, the nutrition facts of these wines are absolutely astounding. Most contain only around 100 calories per 5 oz serving, with the same alcohol content youd get from more calorie-laden wines.

Taste Test : Skinnygirl

Last up was Skinnygirls pinot grigio, which comes in at 100 calories per 5-ounce pour. Calories are listed on the bottle for this one too, which seems like it should be standard for anything advertising its calorie content, yes?

Out of the three, we found this to be the smoothest and it took the top spot for three of us, though FitVine wasnt far behind. Worth buying? Sure! But just because it tastes good. Honestly, at 100 calories a glass, youre not saving enough by drinking it if you dont really like it. A bottle costs about $16.

How Many Calories In A Glass Of Wine

FitVine Wine: To Health Conscious People Who Want To Drink Wine While Staying In Shape

A glass of wine contains between 90 and 240 calories. This amount is based on a standard wine pour of 5 oz.

Are you trying to keep the calories to a minimum but still want to enjoy a glass of wine? Picking a dry white wine with a lower ABV is your best bet. A riesling, pinot blanc, or sauvignon blanc are all good options here. You can also keep track of your pours and the calories in wine by using wine glasses with pour lines.

In addition to sources like the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the vintner themselves, you can also attempt to determine the caloric content yourself. Just use the simple formula below:

ABV x Ounces x 1.8

How Many Calories In Rose Wine

Rose wine has an average of 25 calories per ounce. Though rosé is not a full-bodied red wine, it still has a comparable amount of calories. Rosé comes in a spectrum of colors from amber to purple. The darker colors are more likely to have a higher calorie count. If you love rosé but are trying to keep the calories low, we recommend sticking to the lighter hues.

Taste Test : Brancott Estate

First up was Brancrott Estates Flight Song Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. This pick is naturally 20-percent lighter in calories than the other wines in the Brancott Estate family, due to the winemakers selecting and harvesting the grapes earlier than usual, when their sugar levels are lower.

The four of us all agreed it tasted more like a mixed drink than wine, but one friend chose it as her favorite of the three. While it was by no means terrible, if youre looking for wine flavor, we just didnt get it.

Coming in at 89 calories per 5-ounce serving, is the taste sacrifice worth a 20-percent calorie savings? Nah. Not to mention, the alcohol content is pretty low at only 9 percent, which may lead to drinking more and defeating the whole lower calorie thing. A bottle retails for $13.99.

Ahhh yes! Spring is approaching… the weather is getting warmer…we are able to step outside again… and all is getting right with the world… except for one thing… BATHING SUIT SEASON! Yikes!

It’s that time of year when we have to burn that extra insulated winter fat we put on from staying tucked inside the warm house. I turned 40 this year and this is NO JOKE!!! Love handles have come out of nowhere and rolls have developed in places I didn’t know were possible. What the ????

That obnoxious quote, “A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.” is now becoming my new truth. And I swear the bathing suits get tinier and tinier just when I need more coverage…. I love my wine and food… what’s a girl to do?

I will give up a lot of things for health and well-being, but I am sorry wine isn’t one of them. FORTUNATELY, I came across FitVine Wine.

My friends, Jan, , & Ann

One night my beautiful, lovely, half-marathon runner friend, Jan brought over a bottle of their wine to try. She is a health nut and I am always tempting her with some wicked indulgences such as Coconut Cream Poke Cakeor Chocolate Fudge Brownies.

I new at that moment I had to try ALL OF THEIR WINE!!!

Does Wine Make You Fat

The interesting thing about calories in wine is that we digest them differently than food. So, if you drink too much or drink before eating, your body initiates a 3-step process to metabolize the alcohol before it can switch back to food. Wine doesnt make you fat , but eating pizza when you re drunk does .

How Many Calories In White Wine

Fitvine Wine Pinot Grigio Video By FBJFit Friends & Fitness

White wine has an average of 24 calories per ounce. This number is only slightly lower than that of red wine. This is because there is such a broad spectrum of white wines. A wine like a riesling will come in below average but another white like a sweet dessert wine will be far above it. It’s important to check both the ABV and sugar content in a white wine to understand where it falls on the spectrum. Any added sugar will add up quickly.

White wine is also perfect for making slushies. So grab that low-calorie white, freeze the wine, and get ready for a delicious treat that doesn’t break your diet.

Calories In Merlot Wine

Merlot wine has an average of 24 calories per ounce. Somewhat surprising for a red, merlot can actually have fewer calories than a number of white wines. Like chardonnay, merlot turns out to be 120 calories a glass and 600 calories a bottle. If you are a lover of red wines, merlot is one of the best for sticking within a certain calorie count. Don’t think you’ll have to give up all red wine for your diet.

Thrive Market Wine Prices

Both Thrive Market and FitVine are affordably priced. But to compare total pricing accurately, you have to consider shipping costs.

At Thrive Market its free if you order $79 or more in wine alone . Thrive Market also has an annual membership fee, but amortized across all your wine purchases, it would only add a nominal amount.

FitVine provides free shipping if you order 12 or more bottles at once. Even at the cheapest price of $15.99 that totals $191.88, so its not going to be as affordable as Thrive Market on the shipping front.

All that is moot if you find it at your local wine store of course.

How Many Calories Are In Your Wine

How Many Calories In A 750ml Bottle Of Sauvignon Blanc ...

Sipping on sauvignon blanc or enjoying a glass of red with dinner can be a nice way to unwind after a hectic day. While drinking wine can provide some health benefits, such as increasing your good cholesterol and reducing your odds of heart disease, alcohol also delivers empty calories and not many nutrients, which can eventually cause weight gain, obesity, and diabetes.

The key with drinking is doing so in moderation. Moderate drinking is defined as having one drink — that’s 5 ounces of wine — per day for women and two for men.

Plus, you want to choose a drink that wont break the calorie bank. As a rule of thumb, white wines tend to be lower in calories than reds. Also, make sure your wine has a lower alcohol by volume percentage, ideally of 11% or less. The higher the ABV, the higher the calorie count. Check out the chart below to see how your favorite wine stacks up.
