Robert Mondavi Winery History, Overview

While the Robert Mondavi story starts with his birth in 1913 in Virginia Minnesota, the history of the Mondavi family in the California wine industry begins with their first purchase in Napa Valley in 1934, which was the Sunny St. Helena Winery, which has since changed names to Merryvale.

The land was purchased from John Poggi. John Poggi was the direct descendant of Joseph Ghisletta, who first cultivated the vineyards in 1874. The Sunny St. Helena winery changed names to Muther Winery, under the ownership of the Mondavi family.

This was followed in 1943 when the Charles Krug winery sold their estate to the patriarchs of the Mondavi family, Cesare Mondavi and Rosa Mondavi for $75,000.

In a few short years following the conclusion of World War 2, Peter Mondavi ushered the modern age into their Charles Krug winery when they became one of the first wineries in the Golden State to begin replanting their vineyards with Cabernet Sauvignon and started to produce wines made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

A fourth-generation Napa Valley winemaker, Rob Mondavi Jr.s immersion in wine began more than 30 years ago. Born in 1971, and the son of Isabel and Michael Mondavi, Rob was raised in the Stags Leap district of Napa Valley and spent much of his childhood among the vines and barrels at Robert Mondavi Winery. Robert Mondavi, the pioneering Napa Valley vintner whose drive and salesmanship revolutionized the way the world thought about California wine, died peacefully Friday at his Yountville, Calif., home, a spokeswoman for the Robert Mondavi Winery said. He was 94.

The son of an Italian-born grape wholesaler from the Central Valley, Mondavi was, at the end of his life, one of the best-known figures in American viticulture, with a name that was almost synonymous with California wine. His Cabernets and Chardonnays have been served at the White House and sold by the glass at Disney theme parks. His Cain-and-Abel exile from his family business after a fistfight with his brother was the source of legend.

His Mission-style winery in Oakville is a landmark and wine label icon. Though he had little formal training in winemaking, he is credited with concocting Fumé Blanc in the 1960s, and with popularizing Chardonnay, in the words of Wine Spectator, as the great California white.

At a time when the phrase fine domestic wine was considered an oxymoron in the United States, Mondavi insisted that California wine could be positioned as a status symbol — a strategy that cleared the way for the modern era of $2,000 cult bottles of Screaming Eagle and trophy wineries.

In a statement, state Sen. Patricia Wiggins called Mondavi the godfather of American wines.

Mondavi is also survived by his children, Michael, Marcia and Timothy; nine grandchildren; and his brother, Peter.

And eventually they will in an academic sensory setting under a professors watchful eye. But first, says Waterhouse, there is a breadth of science, art and craft. The RMI brings those three disciplines together in an institute that has achieved world-class status and recognition in a little more than 20 years. Its focus melds expertise and education to train outstanding viticulturists and winemaking innovators for an industry in constant flux.

At the risk of taking the romance out of this curriculum, no one earns a diploma in a Bachelor or Masters of Science in Viticulture and Enology without plant physiology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, horticulture, statistics, physics, chemistry, genetics, yeast qualities, chemical engineering, sensory training, physical labor, and lots of people in lab coats.

The Rise And Fall Of The Mondavi Empire

In November 2004, the house of Mondavi collapsed. The wine world learned that the Robert Mondavi family, the first family of American wine, would no longer own their namesake wine company. Robert Mondavi Corp. had accepted a $1.3 billion bid from the global drinks giant Constellation Brands, dropping the curtain on what had been California’s greatest wine saga.

Many people knew of the financial perils Robert Mondavi Corp. faced in the preceding years and its repeated efforts to set its ship right. Despite an outward appearance of prosperity, unity, vision and strong leadership, the company had been in constant turmoil, emotional and fiscal. The company seemed to go from one crisis to the next, with barely enough time for the key characters to gather their wits.

The family’s bitter feuds were well-known inside and outside Napa Valley. Robert, the hard-driving family patriarch, perfectionist and wine icon, had been a difficult father, and his children felt distanced from him. He had pitted his two sons, Michael and Timothy, against each other on numerous occasions, even publicly criticizing them, and then forced them to fight for his approval against the backdrop of their shared desire to keep the winery in family hands.

Robert’s two sons, Michael and Timothy, helped him grow the winery, but later ran into trouble when handed the reins.

What they have learned from this remains to be seen.

American Wines Earned Respect

American wines, even good ones, still could not compete with the French. They were relegated to a lower caste and lacked the cachet of a French name. In 1976, this situation began to change. A British wine enthusiast named Steven Spurrier held a blind tasting in Paris featuring wines of California and France. All nine judges were respected French wine critics, sommeliers, and other oenophiles. The results were astounding. Though Mondavi did not attend the tasting, he was thrilled with the outcome. Of the whites, three out of four of the top-rated choices were from Napa; the top-ranked red was from Napa; many others ranked in the top ten. Mondavi wrote in his autobiography, Harvests of Joy, “Ten years before, I had made a bold claim and I had staked my future on it: that we in California could make wines that would stand proudly alongside the very best in the world. Now here we were, proving just that, on French soil, no less.” Even more amazing, some of the winning wines were undervalued in the United States, selling for $6 or $7 a bottle because the winemakers figured that Americans would refuse to pay any more than that.

Mondavi Chinese Fakes Wine Of The Year

I recently tasted a range of premium Robert Mondavi wines with Associate Winemaker Gustavo Gonzalez during a visit to his Ontario agent Churchill Cellars. I was curious to get a sense of life at Mondavi under the new ownership of wine behemoth Constellationthe New York-based company that recently acquired Canadas Vincor. Gonzales, who worked at the Napa winery before, during and after the transition, referred to the time before the Constellation takeoverat a time when Robert Mondavi was being publicly tradedas the dark period in terms of wine quality and direction . He recalls that the Mondavi staff were actually petrified of Constellations arrival. Given Mondavis long history of wine culture we felt like we were the Romans, and they were the invading Goths from the east, he said. But, as it turns out, the Goths arrived and wanted to learn from the Romans.

Meritage is basically a Bordeaux blend that’s not from Bordeaux. The French don’t appreciate anyone outside of France using the term Bordeaux, so a new term was created for wines that meet the traditional Bordeaux standards. Last summer we reviewed the previous vintage of the Private Selection Meritage and enjoyed it quite a bit. In fact, we liked it so much we even gave it a spot on our recent 10 Great Red Blends Under $10list. Given this I was eager to try this new vintage especially when I saw that this year’s wine included about twice as much Malbec as last year.
