A Smart Dtc Strategy Is Helping Sales Fizz For Wine In A Can Brand Babe

This Man Bobi Wine

TRENDING TODAY

When the pandemic took hold, canned wine brand Babe launched a sympathetic ‘Cancel 2020’ campaign. However, thanks to a clever direct-to-consumer strategy, it looks like this year might actually be one of the most fruitful yet for the AB InBev-owned business.

Sparkling wine brand Babe has deep roots in social media. Formerly known as Swish Beverages, the business was founded by Instagram influencer and self-deprecating comedian Joshua Ostrovsky along with Alexander Ferzan and brothers David Oliver Cohen and Tanner Cohen

Ostrovsky caused a swishy splash when he debuted the companys first product, White Girl Rosé, in 2015. A pinkest-of-the-pink blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel firmly pitched at millennials, the brand itself was a cheeky nod to a 2014 incident which had seen a harrowing rosé dearth in the Hamptons.

Ostrovsky has previously admitted that he didnt initially see longevity in the project, saying the wine was designed at first to sell to women in the Hamptons that we knew with like, rhinoplasty. But five years and several sparkling wine launches later, Babe has a solid grip on the burgeoning canned and rosé wine markets the former of which is currently worth $70m and set to represent 10% of the total wine market by 2025. All thanks to millennials who want to sample different flavours and avoid binge drinking by the bottle.

Customers who have engaged with Babes social content are 1.5-times more likely to buy, she adds.

Argentine Brewery Quilmes Which Is Owned By Ab Inbev Has Acquired The Dante Robino Winery With Plans To Double The Producers Share Of The Domestic Market In Two Years

According to reports from Argentine media, the sale was agreed on 17 February. A spokesperson from AB InBev told the drinks business: We can confirm that Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes, our subsidiary in Argentina, closed the signing of the terms for the acquisition of Dante Robino Winery.

The acquisition is part of the companys plan to better understand and study the wine segment and to continue with the growth of the companys brand portfolio. The transaction still needs to be approved by the local authorities.

The sale includes the winerys 5ha estate and vineyards in the Perdriel area of Luján de Cuyo. While the financial terms have not been disclosed, Martin Ticinese president of Quilmes brewery, told Los Andes that all 74 jobs would be retained and María Soledad Buenanueva would remain as head winemaker.

He also told the publication that he intends to boost the winerys performance in the Argentine market.

He said: Today the winery has less than a 1% share of the domestic market. Our idea is to double it in the next two years.

It follows news that Quilmes had entered the canned wine market with a new pilot project backed by AB InBevs innovation and investment group ZX Ventures.

The company launched a white and red wine, packaged in 375ml cans and called Blasfemia, in 130 trial outlets in Argentina.

Dante Robino produces around four million bottles of wine a year and currently exports around 30% of its production to 40 markets.

The Worlds Largest Brewer Ab Inbev Has Announced Plans To Buy Babe Wine The Wine Brand Co

Babe, previously known as Swish Beverages, was set up by Ostrovsky alongside David Oliver Cohen and Tanner Cohen who run the popular twitter account Babe Walker .

The company specialises in canned wines, first launching White Girl Rosé in 2015.

The purchase is the latest example of AB InBevs attempts to diversify its brand portfolio as sales growth of mainstream lager in the US has started to stagnate.

AB InBev first invested in the New York-based wine brand last year, acquiring a minority stake through its investment arm ZX Ventures.

The brewer bought San Diego-based Cutwater Spirits in February this year, which was founded by three former Ballast Point Brewing executives and has a range of premium mixers, ready-to-drink canned cocktails, as well as whiskey, vodka, gin and rum.

How Babe Wine And The Fat Jewish Built A Canned Wine Empire From Monster Trucks And Mega

Led by an Instagram mainstay, Babe Wine has won over a social media generation.

Babe Wine

Babe Wines campaigns are very different from most wine brands. There are no well-coiffed women, sipping rosé and nibbling on charcuterie boards. Nor are there suavely-dressed men in leather armchairs, swirling a heavy-bodied red in a pricey glass.;

Instead, there are monster trucks. Scented candles that smell like the locker room at the Superbowl. Babe-branded pillows to scream into on election night. Slo-mo videos of founder Josh Ostrovsky cannonballing into a pool.;

Conventional Babe is not. But its this kind of screw-the-rules approach that has catapulted the brand to impressive successfrom 2016-2020, BABEs CAGR was nearly 2,000% according to IRI. These numbers quickly caught the eye of beverage giant Anheuser-Busch, who acquired Babe in 2019.;

Ostrovsky began his ascension to kingpin of canned wine back in 2015 with the launch of White Girl Rosé.;

Back in 2015, Millennials were getting super into rosé, discovering that it was, what I like to call, the slutty cousin of wine, says Ostrovsky. Serve it ice cold, pour it all over your face, and text your ex in the middle of the day. No rules cans.;

“We want to be the Bud Light of wine.”

Its success was instantaneous. In the snap of a finger, White Girl Rosé pulled the blush-hued beverage from its spiritual home at brunches and bachelorettes and democratized it, helping canned rosé move from fad to full-blown beverage category.

California is a vast region that consists of several smaller wine-producing areas. Although Napa Valley and Sonoma are what California is most known for, the states other regions produce equally outstanding wines.

Napa Valley and Paso Robles are renowned for the bold reds of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, as well as the scenic wine route which offers unique experiences to wine lovers. On the contrary, Santa Barbara and The Russian River Valley, with conditions more suited to delicate grapes, produce outstanding expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Each of these regions offers a unique take on the wines of California allowing for a greater expression and experience of what the Golden State can truly offer.

Boxed Wines Terrible Reputation

The downside is that boxed wines have a terrible reputation with most consumers who associate the product with low quality wines that no one should drink. First things first, there are a lot of boxed wines available that are of despairingly low quality. There are also a lot of bottled wines of low quality too.

A recent study found that approximately half of box wine purchasers tried the wine in a bottle first before buying the large package. They also tend to be regular drinkers, and regular drinkers that go to liquor stores more often. Maybe they are big entertainers, too, as the most common reason cited for buying boxed wines is for a social gathering such as a barbecue followed by a party and finally as a way to have a day-to-day supply of wine on hand at home.

Buying Boxed Wine For A Big Gathering

Vintage Wine Estates 3 or 12 Bottle Favorites Wine Set on QVC

Most comsumer cask wine comes in either a two-, three-, or four-liter package. A four-liter cask contains a little more than five regular bottles of wine and takes up a fraction of the packaging of those regular glass bottles. Like glass bottles, boxes are fully recyclable-and youll get your deposit back at the bottle depot.

The juice inside the box will keep for up to about six weeks once opened, but the package isnt made for cellaring so the total shelf life for the product is about 12 months or less . This is bad news for your uncle John who saved an extra box of California Chablis from his 1986 wedding in the basement by the furnace.

It is also a much cheaper package for wineries to produce to boxed wine and those savings are passed along to consumers who dont mind buying their wine in bulk. For example, Capistro retails for around $8 for a 750 ml bottle. The four-litre package is about $37. Do the math and you save about $5.50 simply because you have the box. Banrock Stations shiraz comes in at around $13 for a bottle while the three-litre box is $43, saving you around $10.

Best Gifts For Wine Lovers And One To Avoid

So with gatherings banned and many missing all the usual hoopla of the holidays, aim for the stars. Heres your list.

Wine-adjacent functional art

For the wine lover with impeccable taste, give a piece of functional art by an Ontario artisan. The Rock Bottom Vessel is more than just a good-looking wine decanter. This one-litre flask cradled in a concrete base combines the functionality of science-grade borosilicate glass with beauty. The bulbous flask withstands extreme hot and cold while the concrete keeps wine at the right temperature for hours.

Freeze the base for four hours and it keeps a flask of chilled wine cool for about two hours. Or heat the base in the oven for 20 minutes at 375 degrees to keep mulled wine, coffee or other hot drinks warm.

Aside from these practicalities, the rock bottom vessel is a gorgeous conversation piece and locally made. Each concrete base is cast by Kim Prokopowich in Paris, Ont. Kim and her engineer husband Steve designed the Rock Bottom Vessel about 11 years ago to teach their children about the thermal properties of the concrete. And the business grew from there.

Actually The Official Wine Of The Nfl Is A Bubbly Ros Called Babe

Here’s how a seemingly unlikely contender took home the trophy

We’ve been doing zone coverage of football wines here at Unfiltered this season as more and more teams, players and other gridiron gadabouts create official wines or found entire wineries. Fifteen teams have activated team wines, many for the first time in 2019, partnering with all-star wineries like Robert Mondavi Winery, Josh Cellars and Joe Wagner‘s Copper Cane. But only in week 9 did the entire league name a wine partner: Coming to 12 stadiums around the country, the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl, it’s the Official Wine Sponsor of the NFL Babe Wine.

Babe kicked off the partnership with a video of TV host Kayla Nicole, in full pads, paint and helmet, dismissing a particularly garrulous sommelier from the table with a hard, shoulder-forward side tackle. A-B told us to keep an eye out for more such hijinks/promotions throughout the remainder of the season.

Greg Jones On The Future Of Southern Oregon Wine

For comparison, BABEs traditional canned rosé checks in at 206 calories, 4.5 grams of sugar and 12 percent ABV. Since BABE 100 presents half the calories and ABV, Phillips describes it as more drinkable, opposed to the original which is more savourable. Babe 100 launched with rosé as its the brands iconic variety, but BABE 100 pinot grigio and red are not far behind, expected to release by summer.;

So why launch the rosé nowin the middle of winter? Phillips commented on how rosé and seltzers both started as seasonal products but theyve since evolved into any time, all-season beverages. She cited the great rosé shortage of summer 2015which itself inspired the BABE brandand how far the pale pink liquid has come. Now rosé is part of our everyday life versus it being hyped one time a year.;

Phillips continued, Wine snobs probably have strong feelings of when and how things are consumed but our whole premise is: throw that out the window and just enjoy what you enjoy.;

BABE Wine

From its founding days in 2015, BABE positioned itself as a wine for all, and BABE 100 was designed to further this notion. Phillips shared, What I love about BABE 100 is it pairs even better with so many different occasions.

White typically means light and refreshing but we want to continue to provide things that are arresting, fun to look at and fun to drink, said Phillips. Were standing out from all the sameness in a way thats unique to our whole aesthetic.;
