Ship The Wine Yourself

How To Ship Wine Safely From Abroad: The Lazenne Wine Check

As I mentioned earlier, most vineyards in Italy cannot ship wine back to the States due to importing legalities but that doesnt mean you cant send it to yourself. There are several different services in Italy you can use to ship wine back, but theyre not as conveniently located like UPS and FedEx are in the States.

Its best to check online before you leave to check shipping options in the destinations youre traveling to. For instance, if youre visiting the Piedmont wine region, is there a Mailboxes or FedEx in Neive or will you need to drive into Alba or should you just wait until you reach Turin to ship your wine? This can be determined before you head out either through an online search, checking with your hotel via email regarding their recommended shipping services or contacting the tourism boards .

Tip: Make sure to check the hours of operation of the shipping office most businesses in Italy are not open on Sunday.

How to Pack the Wine if Youre Shipping it Yourself: The best option is to purchase a Styrofoam wine box that can hold six or 12 bottles. The one problem with Styrofoam wine boxes they arent always easy to find, especially in remote wine areas of Italy. If you are able to find them expect to pay 8-12 euros / $10-$15 per box.

Best Shipping Practices:

Using Shipstation To Ship Alcohol

Now that you can start shipping liquors and beer with UPS, ShipStation has added support for sending alcohol globally. Shipping alcohol overseas can easily be done with ShipStation. The only requirements UPS has for the shipper before shipping with ShipStation are:

  • They must have a contract signed with UPS that states they can and will ship alcohol
  • They must select Adult Signature as the delivery confirmation option

If you are a ShipStation customer and are using UPS to ship alcohol, you can integrate with UPS Paperless Invoice, which will streamline and simplify your paperwork by allowing you to digitally transmit necessary information for the customs clearance process. By uploading all the required alcohol-related documentation to each country electronically, wineries, distilleries, and breweries can avoid delays.

Wine Suitcases Using A Wine Bottle Suitcase

Wine suitcases are specialist suitcases specifically designed for packing wine bottles for air travel. They are not always cheap but can be cheaper than local shipping, especially if you wine travel regularly. Also, it beats not being able to take any wine home if you visit a smaller vineyard that doesnt have a shipping service in place.

VinGardeValise does a great wine suitcase that carries up to 12 bottles of wine with 6 removable inserts. The best thing about this type of wine suitcase is that if youre not packing the full 12 bottles, you can simply remove one of the inserts and use the extra space for other items of luggage.

For something a little cheaper you could also try specialist wine bags for air travel such as the Lazenne wine travel bag. This lightweight bag comes with a heavy-duty polystyrene insert which holds up to 12 bottles of wine. A benefit of this type of bag is that it can also be used to transport other bottles such as spirits, beers and olive oils.

Tip: many of the smaller wineries the places where youre bound to like the wine the most only sell wine by the half-case . Very quickly your Ill have a bottle of this wine and a bottle of that wine can turn into Ill take a half-case of this wine and a half-case of that wine. Hey presto youre packing 12 bottles of wine.

  • North Dakota
  • Vermont
  • Washington, DC

Seal In A Plastic Bag If It Contains Liquid

If youre shipping a glass bottle that contains liquid, like a bottle of wine, you should seal the bottle in a plastic bag. This will keep it from leaking in the mail and damaging the structural integrity of your box.

You can also use electrical tape to secure the lid in place.

Carbonated drinks, like beer or soda, are more likely to blow their caps during shipment. If youre shipping these types of items, make sure you take the time to seal them properly.

FedEx allows the shipment of alcohol. However, there are some specific requirements youll need to meet to get started. Weve laid those out for you below.

  • First, create an account with FedEx
  • Sign the FedEx Alcohol Shipping Agreement
  • You can contact your FedEx account executive for any help you might need on this. If you dont have a FedEx account executive, give FedEx Customer Service a call at 1-800-GoFedEx and request that an account executive call you.
  • Use an electronic shipping solution for reporting purposes
  • Youll need to create your shipping label with FedEx Ship Manager®. This aids FedEx in reporting alcoholic shipping activity to state authorities on a regular basis. Again, your FedEx account executive will be able to walk you through this process.
  • Fedex requires a special label signifying that the package contains alcohol
  • Use the proper packing material
  • Use the right packing material that ensures your alcoholic shipment is secure. We suggest completely covering your bottle in something soft to prevent glass breakage and to absorb any liquid if the bottle happens to break. A cloth or hand towel should do the trick.
  • Obtain an adult signature
  • Final delivery requires an adult over 21 with proper identification to sign for the package.

Flying With Wine: How To Get Your Wine Home

When youre visiting vineyards and wineries in other countries, youre bound to want to bring a few bottles of your favourite wine home with you. Which throws up the obvious question how?

Travelling with wine can be a difficult task, particularly the awkward feat of flying with wine. Can you put wine in checked luggage? And whats the best way to pack wine without the bottles breaking? Is there a specific wine carrier or wine suitcase I should use? Can I send wine home, and if so, whats the best way to ship wine from overseas?

Wine In Checked Luggage Using A Wine Bottle Travel Protector

If you dont trust your clothes alone to protect your wine, another cheap and safe method for packing wine in checked luggage is to invest in a specialist wine bottle travel protector.

Inflatable wine travel protectors or sleeves are a secure way to transport wine in your suitcase without running the risk of breakage. These handy little wine travel protectors come flatpack with a pump and can be blown up when needed to form a thick layer of padding for your wine. Either invest in one or two sturdy self-inflating wine sleeves such as the WineHug, which can be deflated and re-used over and over again, or opt for a multi-pack of inflatable wine sleeves which come with a small pump.

Wine Skins are also great for packing wine in checked luggage. With a bubble-packaging interior and vinyl exterior, Wine Skins are secure, easy to use and leak-resistant in case of an accident. I used one of these on a trip to South Africa and although I only had two bottles, it gave me a lot more confidence than if Id just been using my clothes.

Quick Tips For Shipping Wine Internationally

Many times, when tourists travel internationally and visit the beautiful wine vineyards of France or Italy, they want to purchase a case of their favorite wine and have it sent back home to the states. Unfortunately, it isnt as simple as placing the wine in a box and shipping it back home.

Shipping wine internationally is a very complicated process. It can be even more confusing for winemakers who want to send their product to customers in other countries.

Every country has their own rules and regulations when it comes to shipping wine internationally and receiving wine from an overseas sender. In the United States, the postal service has banned shipments of all alcoholic beverages. Third-party shipping providers such as FedEx and UPS can ship wine, as long as the customer purchases it from a licensed wholesaler, dealer, or distributor.

The growth of the wine industry in the U.S. alone has helped many wine enthusiasts try out brand new flavors. Although wine distributors may already have success in the United States, they would have even more if the overseas wine shipping process was more straightforward.

    Shipping Wine And Alcohol

Shipping alcohol is not an automatic entitlement. There are rules that need to be followed to successfully take your collection to the next duty station with you. Please do your research and prior coordination before your appointment with the Transportation Office. If you do not have all permits and paperwork filled out prior to your counseling appointment you will not be permitted to add the alcohol at a later date.

You must be in possession of the alcohol prior to the orders being issued. You are not authorized to purchase additional beverages prior to shipment if you orders have been issued.

Be aware that if all permits and requirements are met prior to your pickup, the individual moving company can still decide not to ship certain things. Things that may cause a liability issue or damages will be up to the carrier to decide.

You must get permission from the destination State where you are going to. They must approve your importation of alcohol into their State. This is done through the individualState Alcohol Beverage Control boards.

If any permits, fees, fines, or tariffs must be paid to the destination State, we must have PROOF of payment received. This comes in the form of the returned documents with the States approval on them. Personal Wine/Alcohol collections are NOT considered by Customs and Border Patrol to be household goods or personal effects. They are NOT eligible for duty-free entry into the United States.
