Why Was It Illegal To Buy Beer On Sunday

How you can enjoy Memorial Day weekend fun on a budget

Banning alcohol sales on Sunday dates back to Prohibition-era blue laws in which religious groups sought to reserve the day for worship. However, Indiana’s Sunday ban lingered for years due mostly to economic reasons with religious objections rarely being part of the debate.

The biggest roadblock had been the liquor store industry, which sought to protect its market share from groceries, pharmacies and big box stores.

With Sunday the second busiest grocery shopping day of the week, liquor stores could lose sales if the public stocks up on their regular Sunday trips to Target. Liquor stores have also objected to the added costs of staffing on Sundays. Finally, some anti-alcohol organizations just don’t want to give consumers another day to buy alcohol.

On March 4, 2018, for the first time Hoosiers were able to buy beer from liquor stores, groceries, pharmacies and convenience stores from noon to 8 p.m.

Statewide Prohibition Of Alcohol

Violence from cowboy culture was a prelude to prohibition in Kansas.

In 1880, Kansas voters approved an amendment to the Kansas Constitution prohibiting all manufacture and sale of “intoxicating liquors” throughout the state effective January 1, 1881, making Kansas the first state in the United States to enact a statewide constitutional prohibition on alcohol, and heralding Kansas’s long era of statewide prohibition. Kansas was a national center of activity of the temperance movement. Carrie A. Nation, born in Kentucky and spending much of her life in Missouri, moved to Kansas with her second husband in 1889, where she became famous for advocating enforcement of the Kansas Constitution’s prohibition of alcohol.

Nationwide prohibition went into effect with ratification of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States in 1919, lasting until repeal by the 21st Amendment in 1933. During this period, alcohol was prohibited in Kansas by both state and federal law. In 1934, shortly after the end of nationwide prohibition, a proposal was put to referendum that Kansas end its statewide prohibition, and regulate and tax liquor instead. Voters rejected it by a sizable margin.

Yes. The law banning alcohol sales while the polls were open was changed in 2010, and was put into practice for the first time during the 2012 election. The law likely had roots in the historic use of taverns being public gathering places as polling places.

Responses To Oklahoma Alcohol Laws

  • Why do you think Oklahoma has some of the strictest alcohol laws? Because its traditionally known for being a conservative state?

Any clue which state has the loosest alcohol laws? My guesses are either Nevada or a small liberal state like Maine.

    said this on | Reply

  • Probably, I think after Prohibition was repealed, the conservative, christian nature of the people in the state still viewed alcohol of any kind as an evil that should be avoided.

Our laws in general arent really a huge deal to me, I guess its just because I have lived here my whole life its all I know. I have never known the luxury of walking into a grocery store and picking up a nice craft beer. We still get good beer, we just can only buy it at certain locations, and before 9 pm . If we could just get our refrigeration laws changed, life here would be very different!

And as for the loosest? I dont know for sure, there was a debate on this on BeerAdvocate.com not too long ago, and It seems like California seemed to have the most relaxed laws. But I gotta say, I was in Louisiana recently, and thats the only place I can recall visiting that allows you to drink beer in public, as long as its in a cup

  • In texas you can drink if youre under 21 but youre married to someone of age. I just moved to Oklahoma here and cant really find anything that says if you can or cant do that here. Do you know?

So, your obvious first choice is a store dedicated to drinks, but are liquor stores open on Memorial Day? Sadly this ones a big no depending on what state youre in. Certain areas of the country have state liquor stores, so federal holidays would prompt them to close, but it isnt a hard and fast rule that theyll be open even if theyre not run by the state. All the liquor stores in Massachusetts, for example, were closed on Memorial Day 2017 even though the state doesnt control these shops.

In Pennsylvania, liquor stores should be open, but this is a relatively new development. Elizabeth Brassell, spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, told Pittsburgh CBS Local that Memorial Day 2017 was the first day that we will have many of our stores open for the holiday. Keep in mind, though, that even if the stores are open, hours may be shorter for the holiday.

The states below do not have state-controlled liquor stores, but you should call any location you might use as a go-to for restocking your sips just to make sure theyll be open:
