Plastic Wine Bottles: Why You Should Never Store Wine In Them

Now, dont get me wrongif you are planning to drink wine from a plastic bottle right away, then more power to you. Plastic wine bottles dont have a direct impact on wine, as long as its drunk within the first few days to weeks after purchasing. That is why you should never wait longer than 6 months to consume wine from a plastic bottle. Heres why:

The plastic that is used in plastic wine bottles known as polyethylene terephthalate otherwise referred to simply as PET, will let air into the bottle. Why is this a bad thing? Well, any air that is allowed to seep into the wine will cause the wine to oxidize. This is a bad thing for your wine for a multitude of reasons, including:

  • The wine will begin to have a stale smell, losing its exotic or fruity aroma that draws you to the wine.
  • The wine will also have an off-putting color. Red wines may turn brown altogether or have more of a brick-red appearance, while lighter whines will begin to have a ghastly gold or off-white hue.
  • Aside from smell and taste, you can rest assured that wine that has oxidized will lack in flavor quality. It wont have the original taste you were craving, whether it was a rich, deep, and succulent red or something light in a glass of white wine.

A study by Dombre & colleagues confirms that PET plastic bottles age wine faster than glass bottles.

    Newly Filled Wine Bottles

All newly filled wine bottles should be stored in an upright position for around 2-3 days to allow surplus air to seep out. After this, you should store wine bottles sideways to enable contact between the cork and wine.

The moisture from the homemade wine will cause the cork to expand. This creates a secure vacuum that successfully seals your wine from the air!

    What About Plastic Wine Corks

How to Cut Glass Bottles | 3 ways to do it

If you decide to opt for a glass wine bottle for storage, does that mean you should also stick to a real cork, not a plastic one? For the most part, you should always opt for a real cork as opposed to a synthetic or plastic cork.

This is due to the simple fact thatcheaper plastic corks will likely let in too much or too little oxygen, which can ruin a wine. You see, a wine that has too much oxygen will end up completely spoiling, while a wine that doesnt have any oxygen reaching it wont be able to mature and erupt in flavor and smell.

That is the reason that it is best to avoid using plastic corks as well as plastic bottles when storing wine.

Plastic Wine Bottles Are Here To Make The Outdoors Fun Again

You can now crack open a whole bottle on a hike, just like you’ve always wanted.

We can be honest with ourselves: The glass wine bottle is more about tradition than logic. Glass is heavy. Its breakable. And though its recyclable, the bottles weight and shape come with its own carbon footprint issues. Glass wine bottles clearly have a few problemsbut is one of them that glass makes it a pain to take wine on a hike? And would that finally convince you to try out wine sold in a plastic bottle?

Yesterday, packaging giant Amcor announced it would be showcasing its line of polyethylene terephthalate plastic wine bottles at next weeks Unified Wine & Grape Symposium. Though the lighter, less breakable packaging is often touted for its environmental benefits, this time around, Amcor took another, somewhat odd approach, pushing plastic wine bottles as an option for the active wine drinker.

People want to enjoy wine more casually, no longer holding it for special occasions or to simply be enjoyed with dinner, Amcors Beth Rettig said in a statement. Consumers are active and living on-the-go lifestyles. They are taking wine with them when they hike, hit the beach, and visit friends. Amcors PET bottles are a lightweight and durable solution for consumers increasing demands.

Nomens Recyclable Pet Bottles Ask Wine Buyers To Pass On Glass

50ml mini empty plastic alcohol liquor bottle shots

Nomen Wines come in plastic bottles

Its estimated that 90% of the wines purchased in America are consumed within two weeks. Five women sharing the name OReilly think those wines should be housed in plastic bottles, just like soda pop and water. Their new line of Nomen wines makes a tasty argument to pass on glass.

Moira, Roisin, Angelica, Marie-Therese and Brigid OReilly own Distaff Wine Co. in Newberg. They started Distaff to tell their stories as women in the industry while also giving voice to women and minorities in other industries. Then the coronavirus pandemic threw them a curve.

With everyone staying home and shopping online, the OReillys noticed the boxes stacking up.

Wed place an order with Amazon for five items, and theyd arrive in five separate boxes that were too big and stuffed with packing materials, Brigid OReilly said.

It also dawned on her that her new company would have to rely on shipping to get wine to its customers with everything shutting down. Nomen Wine was created to meet that shipping need with as little environmental impact as possible.

The Nomen name is more than a play on Distaff Wine Co.s all-female ownership. In Latin, it means family name. If the OReilly surname sounds familiar, it should: David OReilly of Owen Roe winery fame is Angelicas husband and father to the other Distaff team members.

Im just an amiable fatherly figure giving guidance when asked and trying to steer clear of the trail they are blazing, OReilly said.

Will Plastic Wine Bottles Ever Replace Glass Wine Bottles

One thing that has become more and more talked about in the wine industry is whether or not plastic will ever be able to replace glass wine bottles. After all, they are far easier to transport, and you and there is no worry about glass breaking and wreaking havoc wherever it lands, so what is the verdict?

Yes, there are many advantages to using plastic wine bottles, but those are only in the short-term. The disadvantages of using this type of material greatly outweigh the positives, especially in the long-term. Therefore, as of right now, its highly unlikely that plastic will ever take the place of glass bottles until the oxidation issue is perfected.
