Best White Wine For Beginners

A support a giveaway choose the best wine for me

It really is a matter of personal preference of whether or not you begin your wine drinking experience with reds or whites, but generally, it’s best to begin with white wines. The reason for this is because white wines are lighter bodied and easier on the palate than reds. Here are a few great starter whites:

  • Pinot Grigio: One of the most user friendly white wines on the market, Pinot Grigio wines are light bodied and crisp, both in finish and flavor characteristics. Give Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio a try.
  • Moscato d’Asti: This slightly frizzy, off-dry wine from Italy is a delight. It has flavors of apricots and almonds, and offers a crispy sweet and juicy sip that tickles the nose as you drink it.
  • Riesling: This wine ranges from dry to very sweet, but is almost universally loved for its crisp citrus and mineral flavors, bright acidity, and light body. Try a German Riesling, or enjoy a bottle from Washington State such as the Columbia Cellermaster’s Riesling.
  • Sauvignon Blanc: This is a crisp, refreshing light bodied white with simple flavors that include kiwi and citrus. It’s also a wonderful summer wine because it is so refreshing. Try a bottle from Kim Crawford.

Reading Wine Bottles For Beginners

No matter how prepared your wine cards are, youre not going to walk into a wine shop, pick up a bottle of Vigonier and find the words full, creamy, floral, and fruity emblazoned on the label.

Well, you might. But probably not.

Wine bottles are often crafted under the conceit that whoever is picking it up already knows what it is. This is one of the reasons beginners find it so hard to branch out.

But most bottles will include some key points of information that will help you: producer/vineyard, region, varietal, vintage, and ABV. Wine Folly has a very easy guide to reading wine bottles for beginners.

Recognize Why Something’s On Sale

While your local wine store might just have crazy deals all the time, most stores put wine on sale for two reasons, according to Turley. 1) The ideal consumption window for the vintage has come and gone, or 2) the wine just isn’t selling and the store wants to clear out inventory. Neither of these things necessarily equal a bad wine, but it’s something to look out for before stocking up on that Pinot Noir just because it’s marked down 10 bucks.

Tips For Picking A Good Bottle Of Wine

Since good wine is so subjective, knowing how to choose the right wine means considering several factors including occasion, flavor preferences, labels and price points. While the combination of these factors is different for each person, the tips below will help anyone in search of that perfect bottle of wine.

1. If you are new to wine, start with a white or rose.

Just as your food preferences evolve as you mature, the wines you enjoy are also likely to change over time. However, a study of consumer palates by Sonoma State University found most people first enjoy a sweet white or rose wine, then later fall in love with dry reds or wines with more distinctive flavors. Fifty-four percent of respondents in the Sonoma State University study said they preferred semi-sweet or sweet white or rose wines when they started drinking wine. While each persons experience is different, an early distaste for drier wines or wines with high tannins may be due to their unique flavor and sharp bitterness.

If the thought of drinking a sweet wine makes you cringe, that doesnt necessarily mean you should jump to reds. Instead, opt for a dry white or rose. Beginning with a lighter-bodied wine can be a step to learning to enjoy a variety of wines.

2. Reflect on other flavors you enjoy.

3. Consider the occasion.

4. Be sure to read the label and learn what youre reading.

5. Look for second-label wines.

6. Dont stress over the age of the wine.

7. Dont let price dictate your choice.

The Different Types Of Wine

Cabernet Sauvignon:

Cabernet Sauvignons are rich, robust red wines from the Napa Valley. These wines are full-bodied and are made up of dark fruit flavours mixed with spices and earthy aromas. Its one of the worlds most widely recognised red wine grape varieties and is most commonly aged in French oak.

Chardonnay:

Chardonnay is the most popular wine varietal in North America and is characterised by its medium to full body and its buttery mouthfeel. It combines crisp flavours like apple and pear with citrus aromas and hints of vanilla.

Malbec:

Malbec is known for its plump, dark fruit flavours and inky dark colour. Its grapes grow mostly in Argentina although it was originally produced in France. Malbecs have moderate tannins and are typically made up of ripe flavours like plum, black cherry and blackberry.

Merlot:

Merlots have milder flavours and lower tannin levels than other varieties of red wine. Although still a type of dry red wine, theyre sweeter than Cabernet Sauvignons and are made of dark blue-coloured wine grapes. Merlots are a fruit-forward wine with plenty of flavours, with spicy and sweet notes that come from ageing in oak barrels.

Pinot Grigio:

Pinot Noir:

Riesling:

Sauvignon Blanc:

Most Sauvignon Blancs are left as dry white wines, with a few brands preferring to leave a small amount of residual sugar for a richer consistency. Its a crisp and light wine with flavours of citrus like green apple, lime and vanilla.

Syrah:

Zinfandel:

Best Organic: Larkmead 2016 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Region: Napa Valley, California | ABV: 14.7% | Tasting Notes: Dark fruit, Tobacco, Fresh-turned earth, Dark chocolate

This winery, under the watch of winemaker Dan Petroski, doesn’t just focus on making world-class wine. Petroski helps shed light on the necessary work for studying climate change, and in 2015, Larkmead converted to organic farming practices.

Cabernet collectors should stockpile wines from the 2016 vintage, which are high in naturally vibrant acidity due to a moderate growing season. Hallmark signifiers are deep, dark fruit and a distinct freshness, all of which the 2016 Larkmead has in spades. Adding to that are incredibly alluring brown spices, fresh-turned earth and tobacco wrapped in dark chocolate, with mouthwatering purple violet notes and firm, dusty tannins.

This is a wine to contemplate over many hoursand, ideally, over the next decade, with a bottle or two every year.

Region: Carneros, California | ABV: 14.5% | Tasting Notes: Red cherries, Bramble, Brown spices

Proprietor Rich Frank, a former Disney executive, bought his eponymous winery in 1992 and released his first wine a year later.

This 2018 release is a full-bodied pinot noir with lively red fruits, deep concentration, firm acidity and sturdy tannins, which will help it develop over a few decades in a cool, dark cellar.

Sip The Rest Of Your Glass Slowly

It seems obvious, but chugging your glass doesnt help you taste the subtle flavors any better.

A really good wine will change its characteristics as it sits in the glass. The longer it is exposed to air, the more flavors emerge.

I find this especially true of white wines, which often develop a more tropical, fruity flavor the longer they are left out to warm up and settle.

This is a great area to experiment and see if different temperatures and different breathing times affect your appreciation of the wine.

Best Red Wine For Beginners

Just as with white wines, you want to start out with simple reds. Then, as your wine palate develops, move on to the complex, full-bodied reds. Here are a few suggestions for a jumping off point:

  • Pinot Noir: Light to medium bodied and super food friendly, it’s so easy to fall in love with a Pinot Noir even if you don’t fancy yourself a red wine enthusiast. Need some suggestions? Try Lindeman’s Bin 99, Devil’s Corner from Tamar Ridge or McMurray Ranch Pinot Noir.
  • Syrah: Syrah and its Australian sibling, Shiraz, are one and the same. Australian Shirazs tend to be a bit on the peppery side while Syrahs tend to be a bit more fruity. For Shiraz, pick up a bottle of Penfold’s or d’Arenberg. As for the Syrah’s, try a bottle of Qupe Central Coast or Eaglepoint Ranch.
  • Beaujolais Nouveau: This French wine is meant to be drunk young. It releases in November of every year and usually sells out before Christmas. The wine is fruity and light, without heavy tannins, making it a favorite for new wine drinkers.
