Nov. 11, 2002 — Wine may have other health benefits, but drinking too much of it can still put your liver at risk. A new study casts doubt over an earlier one suggesting that wine was less harmful to the liver than other spirits.

Earlier this year, a Danish study showed that wine drinkers were 70% less likely to develop cirrhosis than those who drank beer or liquor. Researchers said they thought that wine’s antioxidant properties might somehow work to reduce the ill effects on the liver caused by the beverage’s alcohol content.

But when French researchers tried to replicate those findings, they came up with very different results. Their study appears in the November/December issue of Alcohol and Alcoholism.

Cirrhosis is a potentially life-threatening condition that happens when scarring damages the liver and prevents it from working normally. Most cases of cirrhosis are caused by excessive alcohol consumption.

In comparing the two groups, researchers did not find any significant differences in the amount of total alcohol consumption. In fact, the relative percentage of pure alcohol consumed from wine was significantly higher in patients with cirrhosis compared with those with healthy livers.

Researchers say their findings “confirm the absence of a link between the type of alcoholic beverage and the occurrence of cirrhosis is still valid.”

– People who have fatty liver disease that wasnt caused by heavy drinking may still need to avoid alcohol if they want to prevent their liver damage from getting worse, a Korean study suggests.

Most people have a little bit of fat in their liver, but fatty liver disease can be diagnosed when more than 5 percent of the liver by weight is made up of fat. If the condition isnt linked to liver damage from heavy drinking, its known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and is most often associated with obesity and certain eating habits.

For the current study, researchers examined data on 58,927 Korean young and middle aged adults with NAFDL who had low levels of fibrosis, or scarring on the liver. After following half of these patients for at least 8.3 years, 5,630 people had progressed from low to more advanced levels of fibrosis.

Moderate drinkers were 29 percent more likely to have worse fibrosis by the end of the study than people who didnt drink at all. Men were considered moderate drinkers when they had up to about two drinks a day, while women could have up to about 1.5 drinks daily.

But light drinkers who averaged less than 10 grams of alcohol daily, were also 6 percent more likely to have their fibrosis become more advanced than people who avoided alcohol altogether, the study team reports in Hepatology.

The study also didnt distinguish between different types of alcohol.

Oct. 15, 2008 — Scientists looking for ways to help treat fatty livers have discovered that an ingredient in red wine can help protect from — and possibly even be used to treat — fat buildup in the liver that goes hand-in-hand with chronic alcohol use.

This study zoned in on resveratrol.

You’ve likely heard about the antioxidant found in red wine, grapes, berries, and peanuts. Resveratrol has previously been linked to health benefits for cancer and heart disease.

It may seem counterintuitive to think that a main ingredient in something like red wine could actually help to protect the liver from damage, but that was one of the key findings.

The study, led by Joanne M. Ajmo at the University of South Florida Health Sciences Center in Tampa, looked at the effects of resveratrol in alcoholic fatty livers of mice.

Researchers found that alcohol-fed mice given resveratrol had less fat in their livers and the fat broke down more quickly than alcohol-fed mice not give resveratrol.

The researchers note that resveratrol has been shown to activate molecules that are also important in fat metabolism in the liver. Chronic alcohol abuse inhibits these molecules.

In this study, alcohol-fed mice treated with resveratrol also had enhanced activity of these molecules.

“Collectively, these results demonstrate that resveratrol treatment protected against the development of alcoholic in mice,” they write.

To decide if youre drinking too much, you should first know how many glasses are in a bottle of wine. This depends on the size of the bottle and how much you pour. A standard wine bottle is 750 milliliters, or about 25 fluid ounces. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines3 a glass of wine as 5 ounces. According to that math, there are about 5 glasses in a standard bottle of wine.
