Wine lover Karen Dalrymple, who regularly orders wine from online sites, has home security cameras. She has six Italian greyhounds, whose bark alerts her to anyone entering the property. And she works at home, so shes always there.
If anyone should be able to order wine online and have it delivered without any trouble, it should be Dalrymple, right?
Dream on.
Even though the dogs bark, and I see the truck on the security camera, I get an email from the delivery company saying they couldnt deliver the wine because no one was home, says Dalrymple, who lives in Charlotte, N.C. The wine stays on the truck, and she has to go through the process the next day. And the next, until the wine gets delivered. Or else she has to pick it up at a FedEx or UPS delivery location.
She says she has complained numerous times, to no avail.
The problem is not unique to her. American consumers can buy computers, dog food, and even motor oil online, and get free shipping. Those packages show up at the front door every time and no one gives it a second thought. But not wine.
A tangled web
As Paredes knows firsthand, wine delivery is a complex and surreal knot of 90-year-old legal restrictions, shipping monopolies, tax requirements, more paperwork than anyone can imagine, and heavy boxes. And despite high fees, theres no guarantee the wine will be delivered.

Do you drink a glass of wine with dinner every night? That puts you in the top 30 percent of American adults in terms of per-capita alcohol consumption. If you drink two glasses, that would put you in the top 20 percent.
But in order to break into the top 10 percent of American drinkers, you would need to drink more than two bottles of wine with every dinner. And you’d still be below-average among those top 10 percenters.
The top 10 percent of American drinkers – 24 million adults over age 18 – consume, on average, 74 alcoholic drinks per week. That works out to a little more than four-and-a-half 750 ml bottles of Jack Daniels, 18 bottles of wine, or three 24-can cases of beer. In one week.
Or, if you prefer, 10 drinks per day.
These figures come from Philip J. Cook’s “Paying the Tab,” an economically-minded examination of the costs and benefits of alcohol control in the U.S. Specifically, they’re calculations made using the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions data.
I double-checked these figures with Cook, just to make sure I wasn’t reading them wrong. “I agree that its hard to imagine consuming 10 drinks a day,” he told me. But, “there are a remarkable number of people who drink a couple of six packs a day, or a pint of whiskey.”

Fish Eye launched a multi-million dollar advertising campaign for their boxed wine products in the beginning of 2007. The company offers 3-liter boxes of wine at a cost of around $16 a box and claim that the wine will stay fresh for up to six weeks after opening. To test this claim, Wall Street Journal columnists Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher conducted a six-week long experiment that included the Fish Eye Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Pinot Grigio. At the end of the six-week period, the two concluded that none of the wines tasted off or oxidized and proved that Fish Eye boxed wines stayed true to the company’s claim of staying fresh for a month and a half.

Now it looks like another kind of box is about to shake up the wine world.

Im talking about box wines or bag-in-box wines that feature an airtight wine-filled plastic bladder inside a cardboard box. You use a built-in spigot to get to the wine. They can be found on the bottom shelf of the wine wall and behind the bar and out of sight at your local restaurant. They come in several sizes 3 liter and 5 liter containers are the most common.
Box wines have a bad reputation. They first appeared in the 1970s and were filled with generic bulk wines. They were one step down from the popular 1.5 liter magnum bottles of Burgundy,Chabils and the notorious Rhine wine. Box wine was cheap, nasty stuff that acquired a frequently deserved bad reputation.
