How To Get An Old Dry Red Wine Stain Out Of Carpet:

  • Soak the stain in cold water. This will moisten the dry stain, leaving it more likely to come out.
  • Blot with a paper towel to pick up the excess water. The carpet should be damp, but not too wet.
  • Apply lemon juice directly to the stain. You can either squeeze the juice directly from a lemon, or use a pre-bottled lemon juice product. Soak the stain thoroughly, so that the acidity begins to act upon the wine stain.
  • Scrub the stain with table salt. As the lemon soaks into the fabric, shake salt onto the area. Use your fingers to massage the salt and lemon into the stain. Work the salt in from the front and the back of the stained area for better results.
  • Rinse the stain in cold water before blotting it dry with a towel, massaging it as you go, paying special attention to the stained area.
  • Add more lemon juice to the stain and leave to dry. If youre in a part of the house where you can allow sunlight to hit the stain, the UV rays make for a natural, fabric-safe bleach.

How to Remove Red Wine Stains From Carpet

It is difficult to remove red wine stains from various surfaces, especially on painted walls. A worrying issue arises from the fact that red wine functions as a dye and the porous surfaces eagerly absorb the wine.

If the painted wall has old or large stains of red wine, prepare and cover the walls to eliminate red wine. This is considered the last option, especially if you are dealing with small or new spots. Let’s now take a look at the steps on how to get rid of red wine stains on painted walls.

    • Clean the spot of the red wine stain with a damp sponge. If the stain is still fresh, you can remove it at this point.
    • Apply a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide directly to a clean cloth, towel or sponge. Apply to the spot of the stains. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain.
    • Prepare a solution by combining 1 part of bleach and 4 parts of water, if there are persistent stains of red wine on the wall.
    • Wash the spot of the stain on the painted wall with the bleach and water solution. Rinse the area well afterwards with fresh water. If the stain persists, continue to wash the wall with the bleach solution.
    • Dry the wall with a clean, dry towel or cloth.

    Spray Water On The Stain

After you have finished blotting, apply some water to the discolored area. This helps to dilute the stain and makes blotting a little easier. It is better to spray the water as other methods of adding water can spread the stain further. By spraying it will only dilute the stain and help you with the soaking up.

Unfortunately, red wine can stain carpets permanently if they sit for too long. Another lesser-known fact: if the stain is exposed to high temperatures, it can affect your ability to lift the stain resulting in a ruined carpet.

Thats why its vital that you act immediately. You can try to use laundry detergent to dilute the stain. Its important to note that you do not want to scrub the stain, as it could end up spreading the red wine and making the stained area much more prominent. Instead, take a dry towel and blot the stain. Since the towel is dry, it will help lift the stain up and away from the carpet, and the sooner you can get started, the less likely the stain will set and permanently ruin the carpet.

Why Does The Red Wine Stain Turn Blue

Red wine is colored with grape skin pigments, specifically anthocyanins, which is the same component that stains your hands when handling plums, fruits and cherries.

Anthocyanins function as acid-base indicators, which is the same interaction behind the decisive tests. The color of anthocyanins is based on the pH to which they were exposed. The acidity makes the anthocyanins red while the alkalinity turns blue. Since wine already contains acid, its anthocyanins are red. However, once these anthocyanins are exposed to more alkaline factors, especially sodium bicarbonate, they start to turn blue.
