Aldi To Launch Online Wine Sales Early Next Year
Discount grocer opens up new line of attack in supermarket wars by selling wine per case in its first online venture
First published on Mon 28 Sep 2015 09.44 BST
Aldi is to open a new front in its assault on the UK grocery market early next year when it begins selling wine online.
The move comes despite the impact of the continuing price war on the group, which has suffered its first fall in operating profits in six years. Matthew Barnes, chief executive of Aldi in the UK and Ireland, said a huge part of an £11m decline in operating profits last year, to £260m, was due to price cuts, as Aldi responded to waves of activity by its bigger rivals.
However, Barnes said the company was determined to keep its prices well below rival grocers: There is no doubt that the price wars have registered in our results and will continue to do so in 2015 but the 15% price gap is cast in stone and one of the foundations of our business, said Barnes. We have a frank approach to making sure we are hands down cheaper than any of our rivals.
Sales rose more than 30% to £6.9bn for the 12 months to December 2014 as the company opened more stores and attracted 1.4m new shoppers.
Todays results show that even Aldi cant escape the clutches of the ongoing supermarket price war. As its bigger rivals have committed to investing billions of pounds worth of price cuts over the next few years, Aldi has been forced to react in kind, she said.
Supermarket That Sells Wine
When we visit New England we will drive from Winthrop to Kennebunkport. Can somebody please tell me of a supermarket that sells wine either near Winthrop or as we drive north. I did a Google search but could”t see one.
Unless laws have changed in MA, I don’t think supermarkets can sell wine.
Do you want to just buy wine someplace or is there some reason you want to buy wine in one of the few supermarkets in Massachusetts that have recently been allowed to sell wine?
If you just want to buy wine someplace any of the Kappy’s are good – there is one just off of interstate 95 on route 114 , or you can buy wine at the CostCo in Danvers on route 1, if you are a member.
Friends Marketplace in Orleans sells wine and has done so for as long as I’ve been going in there. One of the other supermarkets in Orleans used to sell wine many years ago I’m sure but then stopped. When were these changes made?
Grocery store chains are limited to selling beer and wine in only three of their stores, I think.
That’s why a lot of small independent grocery stores call sell beer and wine, depending on whether they receive a permit from their city or town.
That said, you usually have a wider selection and lower prices in a liquor store, like the above-mentioned Kappy’s. There is also a large Kappy’s on Rt. 1 in
There will also be a New Hampshire liquor store with it’s own dedicated exit off of 95 North.
Buying wine or anything else is definitely not a problem here 🙂
Instacart Aldi Expand Ebt Snap To 23 States
Jon SpringerGet great content like this in your inbox.
In what officials are calling a significant step in ensuring equitable access to online shopping conveniences, Instacart is expanding SNAP payment integration to Aldi stores in 23 states and Washington, D.C., beginning Dec. 17.
The partnership between Aldi, the fast-growing German discounter based in Batavia, Ill., and Instacart, which facilitates delivery and curbside online shopping for the retailer, makes SNAP shopping available at more than 1,000 locations with particular appeal to lower-income shoppers, or about half of Aldi’s U.S. locations. The news follows the initial rollout of the program across more than 60 store locations in Georgia, which launched in mid-November, and another 570 stores across California, Illinois, Florida, Pennsylvania and Texas, which launched earlier this month.
The expansion follows the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services most recent approval allowing Instacart and Aldi to expand a pilot known as EBT SNAP, or electronic transfer benefits for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The expansion includes Aldi stores in Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Washington, D.C., West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Is Alcohol Cheaper At Trader Joes
Trader Joes does have lower prices on beer and wine, and liquor where available compared to most alcoholic beverage stores in the same areas. And their private label alcohol is significantly cheaper.
A bottle of that might be $20 elsewhere can typically be found at Trader Joes for $15. So, you might be wondering why they are cheap.
So how cheap? Its very cheap when you consider that a bottle of one of its most popular wines, Charles Shaw, goes for less than $3! It practically goes for a song. Its available as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay, in red and white varieties.
Its so popular, more than a billion bottles have been sold.
Its being made for TJ, under a contract, by Bronco Wine. Bronco Wine employs a variety of strategies to keep its overhead very low. This is why TJ gets to sell the wine at such rates. What of Vodka? Vodka at Costco goes for $12.99, while Gin at TJ sells for $11.99.
But I used to regularly buy my tequila, bourbon, and vodka at TJs when I lived in California.
And, for example, I used to buy Puerto Vallarta Tequila Blanco in a 750ml bottle for under 15 bucks. These days that same bottle sells elsewhere for $28.
These days, they mostly sell their private label tequila, but the prices will almost always be better on all alcohol at TJs.
Can you buy these goodies at any Trader Joes store, no matter where you live?

Aldi Helps Us Create The Perfect Charcuterie Boards
It doesnt matter what time of the year it is, you can never wrong with a charcuterie board. And if you want to make charcuterie magic happen for the holidays, you may want to head to your nearest ALDI.
We recently took part in a very special, virtual charcuterie lesson with a member of the ALDI Charcuterie Board of Directors . And what we learned is that whenever we want to create personal charcuterie boards or even larger boards for intimate gatherings, they are the place to go to get our meats, cheeses, spreads, nuts, dried fruits, and more.
Plus, with ALDIs wine section, we can build a charcuterie board inspired by the wines we choose too. Among the wines we learned about were the William Wright Reserve Pinot Noir, the 30 Miles Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Belletti Prosecco. And I will admit that the Pinot Noir was a particular favorite, both in terms of pairing it with our charcuterie offerings and in just sipping magic.
So what are some of the must-have items from ALDI for you next Charcuterie Board? I am so glad you asked .

How To Create A Build
Mimosas are traditionally made with orange juice and Champagne, but you can pair any bubbly with a variety of juices and fruit garnishes. Creating a mimosa bar lets everyone customize their own unique cocktail. And buying everything at ALDI lets you do it affordably.
Heres what you need from ALDI to make this mimosa bar:
- Belletti prosecco
- Natures Nectar Orange Juice
- Other varieties of juice such as Simply Nature Organic 100% Super Fruits Juice and Natures Nectar Cranberry Pomegranate Cocktail
- Fresh berries and sliced fruit like lemons, limes, and oranges, raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries
- Champagne flutes or other slim glasses
Mimosas are typically a 1:1 ratio between bubbly and juice. One bottle of Belletti Prosecco will be enough for about six mimosas.

Italys Famous Cocktail Cherries
The first question: sweet or sour cherries? Either can be used, but bright-hued sour, or tart, cherries like the Morello and Montmorency varieties are the traditional choice. They tend to be smaller than sweet varieties, and their flavor holds up against the sugar syrups used typically to preserve cocktail cherries.
Sour cherries also have history on their side. They flourish in Italy, where cocktail cherries were first perfected.
Notably, Italys Luxardo uses marasca cherries, a Morello variety that gives its name to the maraschino cherry. Luxardo was founded in whats now Croatia in 1821, where dense, dark cherries grew well, writes Amy Stewart, in her book The Drunken Botanist.
The plant also was used to make maraschino liqueur. After World War II, the lone surviving member of the Luxardo family decamped to Italy, cuttings from the cherry trees in tow. Italian producers Fabbri and Toschi used Amarena cherries, another sour variety.

Can You Use A Self
Typically, one is not able to purchase alcohol at self-checkouts unless there is an associate available to verify the purchasers age.
Stores such as Walmart and Kroger do allow the sale of alcohol at self-checkouts, but the customer must scan their ID prior to purchasing.
Aldi has used an entirely employee-driven checkout process but has begun trialing self-checkout consoles in their stores in 2021. The first Aldi self-checkout was debuted in May of 2021, at their store in Akron, Ohio.

The busy holiday season is fast approaching, making convenience more important than ever, and adding alcohol delivery to our online offerings is one more way Aldi saves you time, noted Scott Patton, VP of corporate buying at Batavia, Ill.-based Aldi U.S. Our award-winning wines range from less than $5 for 90-point rated Evanta Malbec to $12 for premium offerings, such as 92-point rated Peaks & Tides Cabernet Sauvignon. Intermingle Red Blend 2014
High-toned, boozy dark berry fruit meets sweet but dirty juice on the palate, with an oddly plastic-like, meaty undertone.
This smells like nail polish. Its burning my nose.I would marinate meat in it.I would not pay $3 for this.
What an odd wine painful and manufactured on the nose, sugary-sweet on the palate. If you want a cheap red blend, go for Targets version, hands-down. Our panels price estimate: $10. Actual price: $5.99

Is Aldi Wine Good
Opinions will vary on any wine, but many Aldi wines have won awards and good Wine Spectator ratings.
A popular wine for Christmas is the imported German mulled wine that Aldi carries.
And stores that carry wine have also stocked Aldi wine advent calendars the past couple of years. They almost instantly sell out! If you are a wine drinker, you dont want to miss out on these!
Aldi Is Bringing Cheese And Wine Advent Calendars To The Us
Just in time for the holiday season, Aldi’s will be bringing their advent calendars to the U.S. But these calendars don’t have traditional chocolates, instead they’re loaded with imported wine and cheeses.
Beginning on Nov. 7, both products will be available for a limited time at participating stores.
Their cheese calendar will feature “24 imported mini cheeses, including cheddar, Gouda, Edam, etc.”
The other calendar, a wine calendar, won’t be available in Massachusetts stores because of liquor laws, but will “offer 24 mini bottles of red, white, rose, and bubbles options, including red blend, Shiraz, Malbec, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc from a variety of regions.”
Those looking for the wine calendar will have to travel outside of the state to pick it up, but those who manage to grab both will have a great daily pairing.
Aldi’s has a handful of stores in the state, including ones in Springfield, Worcester, Chicopee, Pittsfield and Raynham, among others.

What To Pick Up From Aldi For Your Next Charcuterie Board
Up first we have to talk about the Premium Fruit Spread sampler box, called the Cheese Pairing Spread Set. As the CBoD member leading our charcuterie lesson pointed out, spreads are a great way to elevate our snacking game and they pair perfectly with the different meats and cheeses. But what we loved the most was just how delicious these fruit spreads were. There were four flavors in the box Pear & Cinnamon , Apricot & Cumin, Fig & Honey , and the Cherry & Rosemary.
If you are creating an elevated charcuterie board, you need these spreads in your life.
For the rest of the board, we had the Appleton Farms Prosciutto , the Appleton Farms Bite Size Dry Salami, the Emporium Selection Honey Id Rather Bee at the Sea Cheddar Cheese, and the Emporium Selection Cranberry White Cheddar Cheese . And of course, you cant have balanced charcuterie set up without the dried fruit, in this case dried apricots, and crackers. For the crackers on this board, it was all about the Fig & Black Sesame Artisan Crisps.
This is just a small, small sampling of what you can snag at ALDI to create your perfect charcuterie board. And we are here for it.
If you have ever shopped at ALDI, then you already know that they have some of the more unique grocery offerings around. And with their meats, cheeses, spreads, and crisps, you can create the most luxurious charcuterie set up, all without breaking the bank.
