The Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, founded in 1967, is committed to maintaining the quality and integrity of Brunello di Montalcino. It is a union of small and large wineries and producers with a common vision of the past, present and future of the wine region and the wines produced here.
There have always been voices of isolated individuals who wanted to achieve a relaxation of the strict regulations. The opposition, on the other hand, saw in a possible easing of the regulations the decline of the wine region and the reputation of the wines. So in 2008 a vote was held within the consortium, which voted with a clear 97% in favour of maintaining the rules.

The rules for the DOCG Brunello di Montalcino designation are set out in 10 articles of the Disciplinare Brunello di Montalcino, written by the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, a voluntary association of winegrowers and producers of the renowned red wine from Tuscany. Each of these articles deals with one aspect of the production process and in turn includes numerous sub-items.
- Simplified, the regulations can be summarized as follows:
- The area for the production of Brunello di Montalcino covers the historical border of the municipality of Montalcino.
- Only the Sangiovese Grosso grape variety, known locally as Brunello, may be used.
- The maximum quantity of grapes per hectare may not exceed 8 tons.
- The wine must mature for at least 2 years in oak or chestnut barrels and undergo four months of ageing in the bottle. For the “Riserva” rating, the ageing in the bottle is extended to 6 months.
- Characteristic of Brunello is its ruby to garnet red colour, intense aroma and dry, slightly tannic, harmonious taste.

Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italys most revered wines, and arguably represents the apex of what the Sangiovese grape is capable of. This is a particularly special time for one of the most revered of them all: Biondi Santi. Brunello Di Montalcino Wines : Key Points
Brunello di Montalcino is undoubtedly one of the most famous Italian red wines in Italy and the world. Since 1980, the appellation enjoys the highest recognition in the Italian system, so it is designated as a DOCG .
Brunello di Montalcino comes from the hills in Siena province, exclusively from the town of Montalcino, over an area of 24,000 hectares, of which only 15% is planted with vines. With a typical Mediterranean climate, mostly dry, Mount Amiata in the south protects the area and limits the effects of thunderstorms and hail storms.
The only grape variety allowed is Sangiovese, historically recognized in the region under the name of Brunello, hence the name of the appellation. While elsewhere in Italy the wines were from blends of different grape varieties, Clemente Santi Brunelloa conducted experiments in the 1870s that allowed the vinification of Brunello alone, and thus creating this varietal wine.
The maximum yield allowed per hectare is 8 tonnes with a minimum alcohol content of 12.5%. The specifications of the appellation require that Brunello di Montalcino has at least two years of aging in oak barrels, and then 4 months in bottle. It is sold 5 years after the harvest. Brunello di Montalcino can be labeled “Riserva” if it spends 6 months in the bottle. In this case, it is sold 6 years after the harvest.

There can be little doubt that Nardi belongs to an elite of Brunello producers, renowned for their slavish approach to quality in the pursuit of perfection. With over 80 hectares of vineyards and Bordeauxs Professor Yves Glories expertise, standards are now impeccably high at this wonderful estate. The regular Brunello is, of course, superb, made in a way that allows the fruit to shine at a relatively young age, but with a powerful structure that means there is never any rush to drink wines from a top vintage. This teams prowess is undoubtedly best demonstrated by the single-vineyard Brunello Manachiara, which is an outstanding wine, showing tremendous depth, complexity, and class. Le Chiuse is a small, 6-hectare estate that was split off from the Biondi-Santi estate in 1993, when it was inherited by Simonetta Valiani, the great-granddaughter of Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, who owns the property today. Le Chiuse is a certified organic estate.
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is lifted with aromatics of soft medicinal herbs, fresh soil, cherry fruit and dried flowers. The palate is fresh with black cherry fruit, tea leaf, orange peel and mineral-rich, stony earth. There is well-integrated structure, with crispness, fresh acidity and a beautifully long finish. How Is Brunello Di Montalcino Made
Brunello di Montalcino wine is produced like all dry winethe grapes are harvested and then selected for quality before being crushed. The juice is then fermented into wine. By law, Brunello di Montalcino is produced from the Sangiovese grape variety, most famously the Sangiovese Grosso so closely associated with Brunello.
The law also requires that Riserva bottles be aged for at least five years before being released to the market. Of those five years, at least two of them have to take place in a barrel and six months in the bottle itself. For non-reserve or normale bottlings, the minimum aging requirement is four years, two of which have to be in barrel and four months in the bottle.
