General Cost Of Wine Tasting In Tuscany

Our group of 8 adults will be renting a villa near Montepulciano for a week from July 2-9. We have rented 2 cars to visit sights and wineries in the area. We want to know approximately what a general wine-tasting session would cost. Will we have a problem getting a wine tasting by just showing up or should we do some planning ahead of time and make some reservations? We don’t want to be tied down to a definite itinerary. How many days in advance would we need to make a reservation?

Our experience with wine tasting at the better wineries is that you absolutely need reservations and pay the fee – varies but around ten euro and up to 20, 30 euro depending on what is included. Sometimes there are road side stands offering wine tasting that may or may not be associated with a particular winery that are just walk ups. Sometimes the winery itself is just up the hill. We showed up at one well known winery without a reservation and they refused to let us in even thought there were only two cars other cars in the parking lot. Reservations were required at least a day in advance. Tuscany is not Napa Valley.

Some of the wineries will have kitchen and offer food. I don’t remember the name but we had lunch at a winery that offered a four course lunch with wine parings for about 75 euro. At the time I thought it was expensive but afterwards it was well worth especially for the setting and experience.

A personal estate host will guide the guests through all of these areas which makes it more special and intimate for the guests.

All in all, Fantesca offers a full experience which should not be overlooked by those who are planning to go on a winery tour.

Talk To Your Wine Pourer

Another place to save on tasting fees is at the wineries themselves. At the end of each tasting its good to ask your wine pourer where to go next. They are very knowledgeable and will let you know where to go based on what you liked from their tasting. The best part about this is that more often than not theyll give you a card for another winery with a comped tasting there. The wineries work on a referral system, so its in their benefit too. Most pourers are talkative and interesting people, so chat with them. Its a great way to learn about wine and it helps the budget.

Napa Valley Wine Tasting Index

We started the Napa Valley Wine Tasting Index Fee in 2014. Back in 2014, the average tasting fee on our Index was $18.50. Today it is $30.50. We are using ten wineries along Highway 29. These wineries allow drop-in visitors to the tasting room. We are using the cost of a basic tasting for this index. In the late 1960s, when Janelle and I first began to visit the Napa Valley, no wineries that we visited charged a tasting fee. Ah, the good old days of the Napa Valley!

This year we were quite surprised to find the smallest increase on a year-to- year basis since we started tracking tasting fees. $30.50 vs $29 from a year ago. Perhaps the wineries are in the mindset that the fees for the entry level has reached a saturation point.

Most of the Napa Valley wineries have discovered it is much more profitable to have elaborate wine tastings, accompanied by foods to the match the wines. Indeed, one restaurateur who recently closed his restaurant citied wineries offering food for the decline in his restaurants patronage.

Elaborate tastings combining foods, tours, and barrel tasting can easily be over the $100 range. These require reservations.

What Are The Most Important Features I Should Have In A Wine Cooler

If youre considering purchasing a wine cooler then its important to understand what features you should look for. This is an important decision and you want to get the best one for your needs. Its also an investment, so you dont want to make a mistake. So what are the most important features I should have in a wine cooler?

One of the most important features I think anyone could look for is durability. This is an item that will be used a lot so you need something that will last for a long time. It should be sturdy and made out of good quality material. You dont want to invest a lot of money on something that will fall apart after a few months. If its going to be used frequently by you and family then you want it to last and that means checking to see if the material its made out of can withstand daily use.

Something else you might want to check into is a locking wine cooler. This feature will ensure that no one gets to the wine and makes it harder for them to open it up. This is important because you dont want your wine to be opened by guests who dont know the difference between cold and hot wine. Guests are often in awe when they see someone opening a wine and its usually because its cold out or they had forgotten to close the cooler.

Do Wine Tasting Room Fees Impact Wine Purchases

The question of whether visitors should be charged a fee to taste wine leaves many wineries seeking to find the right balance between responsible business practices and customer hospitality.

Dan McCole and Don Holecek, Michigan State University Extension

Editors note: This information was first prepared and published as part of the Northern Grapes Project.

Charging visitors a fee to taste wines is a sometimes contentious issue that has many wineries seeking to find the right balance between responsible business practices and customer hospitality. Although 70 percent of North American wineries now charge a fee to taste wines, the practice in some regions is inconsistent. Some wineries believe offering a free tasting can encourage wine sales, and others feel as though charging a fee shows the consumer that the wine is of high quality and cant be given away for free.

Average Wine Tasting Price

While different wineries charge different amounts for a session of wine tasting, the average cost is currently $20 per person. There are some which charge around $15 and others that charge $25, but the average is around $20, so have that available for every wine tasting room you want to visit on your trip. The cost covers the wine, maintaining the room, and the employees who serve the wine.

$20 is a ballpark figure and one that may go up over the next few years if the trend continues. For those who are traveling on the fabled Highway 29 where many of the wineries and vineyards are located, you can trust that the wine tasting rooms will be open on most days from morning to early evening. You may want to make a list and budget the money needed for your wine tasting. For the most part, reservations are not needed as you can simply go into the wine tasting rooms when they are available.
