And we thought was big news for the beverage alcohol industry. Not so much.
Amazon is now buying liquor licenses for warehouses dedicated to Amazon Prime alcohol deliveries with one of its more recent coups being the aquisition of a liquor license for its new warehouse in Colorado.
This is notable for several reasons.
First, Amazon has 140 warehouses throughout the United States . While Whole Foods gives Amazon 450 licenses to sell wine out of the grocery stores, having dedicated alcohol warehouses lets Amazon scale their liquor business much more quickly.
Amazon can buy and store more product, sell more alcohol, and service larger areas all without the overhead of having to stock shelves, merchandise, staff stores, etc. Its an ultra lean, ultra scalable liquor retail model. As a result, they can sell product at lower margin *and* offer consumers home/office delivery at very low cost.
Of the 30 cities that offer Prime Now delivery, these 12 deliver wine, spirits and sometimes liquor in 2 hours or less: Cincinnati, Chicago, Columbus, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York City, Phoenix, Portland , Richmond, San Diego, San Francisco Bay Area and Seattle. Sounds like Denver will soon be added to that list.

Greetings hatvtop Regrettably, PA does not allow wine or beer sales in Costco stores . So our options are rather limited. Technically, we are not supposed to transport alcohol across state lines, but we occasionally stop by Costco locations in other states, like VA and KY while visiting family there. I think the authorities have enough real issues to deal with so we are probably safe to bring back a few bottles of wine to sample at home when we get back. The KY Costco locations even carry spirits with the usual low markup like their wines. I hope this info helps until PA someday changes its archaic liquor laws!

Pennsylvanias Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores are now open for curbside pickupand online sales. Still, Pennsylvania residents plenty of other e-commerce options for buying wine that to be shipped to their homes.
A decade ago, only Pennsylvania wineries could deliver wine to Pennsylvania residents, but direct-to-consumer sales from out-of-state vintners are now permitted. Pennsylvania residents may purchase wine from over 1,200 U.S. wine producers that maintain Pa. licensing, with a few restrictions: an adult signature must be provided upon delivery, this wine may not be resold, and no more than 36 standard 9-liter cases can be ordered from any individual company per year.
The list of vintners licensed to ship to Pennsylvania consumers encompasses everything from huge corporate wineries to tiny family-owned vineyards. A good chunk of these are high-end wineries that market to collectors of fine wines. But many of the names would be familiar to bargain shoppers since their wines are affordable staples on state store shelves.
The List Of Rationed Items Includes Certain Bourbon Champagne Cognac Tequila And Whiskey Brands
In total, the list includes 43 specific products that will be restricted “for the foreseeable future.” And while the cited products only constitute about two percent of the state’s full set of offerings, it does touch upon a broad range of styles, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Currently, rationed products include everything from bourbon and cognac to tequila and whiskeyand even champagne. Higher-end household brand names such as Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Hennessy, Don Julio, Buffalo Trace, and Patrón make up the bulk of the list of controlled bottles.

Recent Efforts To Push Last Call
Even before the pandemic, legislators in Pennsylvania and other states from both sides of the aisle have tried to push last call.
Rep. Jordan Harris, D-Philadelphia, tried to extend last call to 4 a.m. in Pennsylvania, but a 2015 measure failed.
In February, The Detroit News reported a Republican representative in Michigan tried to extend last call from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m., arguing theres a market for late-night alcohol sales and it would benefit those that work outside a 9-to-5 schedule.
In 2019, lawmakers in California tried to push a last call bill for 10 cities: Sacramento, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Long Beach, Coachella, Cathedral City, Fresno and Palm Springs, according to a report from CBS Sacramento. Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. vetoed it saying, I believe we have enough mischief from midnight to 2 without adding two more hours of mayhem.
And in 2014, a Democrat in Delaware tried to push the states last call from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m., but it also failed.

Most liquor stores in PA are closed on Sundays, though a few are now open. I believe that most if not all “party” stores are closed on Sunday in PA due to “blue laws”. I do believe you can find a bar or restaurant to buy 6-packs on Sunday, depending on local regulations and the bar’s specific policies. So, yes, buying any sort of beer, wine or liquor is a total hassle in PA compared to other states. That’s why we go to NJ or Delaware or NY State.
What About Shopping Locally
Though Amazon is a massive company, it also offers a platform for small, independent, and local merchants, Wiznitzer points out. There are ways to be very intentional in what you buy. Do some research: Is it a small company? How are they operated? What are their reviews? Are you getting something a little more unique, or a little more generic?
