Delamain Is Made Exclusively From Grand Champagne Eaux

Dr Joe Schwarcz talks about the most expensive wine in the world

With five different crus in the cognac region, the most prestigious and exclusive is Grande Champagne. The gentle slope and unique chalky soil of the region produce the very best grapes, and Grande Champagne is only 3.2% of the total cognac appellation, but is the most heavily planted with 32,904 acres of vines .

Delamain Is Family Owned For 9 Generations

In 1759 James Delamain came from Ireland and settled as a merchant in Jarnac at age 21. He began working for a cognac négociant named Issac Ranson, and eventually married his only daughter in 1762, which was enough to become a partner in the business. Ranson & Delamain was formed, but after James Delamains death in 1800, inheritance laws created family turmoil, resulting in liquidation in 1817. In 1824, James Delamains grandson Anne Philippe Delamain founded Maison Delamain. Today, Delamain is under the leadership of Charles Braastad, the grandson of Miss France Delamain, after Charles joined his father Alain Braadstad-Delamain and his cousin Patrick Peyrelongue in the family business.

The World’s Most Expensive Champagnes

The Top 10 Most Expensive Champagnes in the World

Champagne is a strange world. Especially when it comes to price.

Theres a limited amount of land, so the competition for the best grapes amongst the top brands is intense. And the process of making it is expensive, so this drives up the price too.

At the level of every day, vintage and non-vintage, Champagne, price is determined as much by marketing as by quality. However, at the rarified heights of the category, scarcity and quality are the key determinants. If you only make a few thousand bottles of a magical wine, then the people who want the best mad money people are going to pay whatever it takes.

So its not surprising that the four most expensive wines on the list are not only exceptional, they are also extremely rare. Two come from single, small vineyards, and the one just three small vineyards.

Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 1998 $2,000

100% Pinot Noir

A single walled vineyard of 0.68 hectares in the heart of Ambonnay, one of the most respected Pinot Noir village in Champagne, yields just 4,760 bottles of blanc de noir Champagne. The combination of this rarity, and the fact that it is an extraordinary Champagne, one packed with the power and intensity of a great red Burgundy, explains why it heads the list of most expensive Champagnes.

Bollinger Vielles Vignes 2004 $1,090

100% Pinot Noir

Krug Clos du Mesnil 2003 $850

100% Chardonnay

Krug Collection 1989 $470

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Roederer Cristal Rose 2006 $469

Taste Of Diamonds $207 Million

The lone survivor from our previous Top 10 Most Expensive Champagne Bottles in the World, and still at number one.

Inside this Champagne bottle is a blend of Grand Cru Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier that offers a floral, refreshing and creamy texture and ends with a light and elegant finish, says the champagne maker.

Indeed, the dreamy flavors enabled this wine gem to win best taste in 2012 according to Champagne Business News, but even that is not enough reason why you might not want even your mother or anyone else for that matter to handle this bottle. Ever.

Why?

Simply because of this: not only is the Taste of Diamonds Superman-style signature logo handcrafted from 18-carat solid gold, but also fixed prominently at its center is a single, flawless deep-cut white diamond weighing 19 carats, which replaces the Swarovski crystal that typically sits there.

Aside from the diamond and gold logo works, the one-of-a-kind bottle itself is not left to ordinary working mortals, crafted by no less than Alexander Amosu, a name those used to customized iPhones and BlackBerrys would easily recall.

If you find yourself heavily depressed unable to get your hands on such magnificent opulence, take heart: you can have your sparkly revenge by grabbing the alternate-dimension version of this bottle sans the precious ornaments and drink to your hearts contentfor a paltry $211.
