Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasnt until the 1970s that this marriage came to light sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stags Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignons structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soilas a perfect example, Rutherfords famous dust or Stags Leap Districts tart cherry flavors.

Napa Valley Fabric Of The Land Red Wine

For our Napa Valley Quilt Fabric of the Land Red Wine, we work with grapes representing the diversity of varietals cultivated in the Napa Valley AVA. We source Petite Sirah, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Petit Verdot grapes from a spectrum of Napa Valley proper from Oak Knoll in the South to Calistoga in the North. The result of blending these diverse varietals and regions yields wines of extraordinary concentration of flavor, color, and texture. While the majority of the fruit comes from the valley floor, we also relied on grapes grown on the foot-slopes to achieve the texture and grip we desired.

Something To Wine About: Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon

Lets face it, as much fun as the holidays are, deciding which wine bottles to bring to events and to gift can be stressful. You want to bring that special bottle that everyone at the party wants to open or that the host or hostess wants to keep for themselves. To fit that particular bill there are few, if any, that are more universally enjoyed and recognized than Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon.

The classic Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, for those that are unfamiliar, has notes of cherry, blackberry, hazelnut, cinnamon, vanilla, and toasted oak. Its rich, its smooth, and it has a lovely velvety mouth feel. This wine pairs well with red meats, hearty Italian foods, and dark chocolate. And, of course, it drinks stunningly well on its own. It is a very economical $16.99, and, if that wasnt enough, the company has a strong objective to give back to so many worthy causes including our troops and first responders. Look here for some of the current organizations they are helping support: joshcellars.com/about-josh/giving-back.

If you want to gift a bottle to a Josh lover but want to get something a little different and more impressive-looking, you can try the Josh Cellars Reserve North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a striking bottle, heavy and black, with a deep punt and gold lettering. This wine is a bit more fruit forward than the classic Josh and also a bit brighter. Its still a bargain at only $21.99.

With their access to an abundance of the best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagners set out to make Quilt a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa . My dad, Josh, taught me that the most important things in life take hard work. I created my Reserve wines with this in mind, taking care to craft them to the highest standards.

This wine comes from the central California’s Paso Robles region, which is known for its richly textured Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of red fruits are backed by powerful scents of black peppercorn. On the palate, the wine features flavors of raspberry, coffee, and vanilla. Bold tannins lead to a long, smooth finish.

Best Washington: Woodward Canyon Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon

Region: Washington | ABV: 14.5% | Tasting Notes: Black cherry, Menthol, Baking spices

Washington State might seem like an odd place to cultivate a big, rich, warmth-loving red grape like cabernetafter all, isnt Seattle rainy about ten months out of the year? Maybe so, but once you get east of the Cascade mountain range, the climate is considerably drier and sunnier, yielding one of the nations premier growing regions for hearty reds.

Only the second winery to be established in Washingtons prolific Walla Walla Valley, family-run Woodward Canyon has been churning out delicious reds since 1981, and their Artist Series cabernet is a blend of grapes sourced from some of the most highly regarded vineyards in the entire state, including the lengendary Sagemoor Vineyard. The result is a silky, medium- to full-bodied wine bursting with notes of ripe black cherry, blueberry, cassis, warm baking spices, cedar, black pepper, menthol, and cocoa, says Claire Coppi, a Certified Sommelier and a cast member on SOMM TV. Wait about five years before opening, as the wine benefits highly from a little time to integrate in the bottle.

Lets go to the left bank of the Gironde River for the most famous expression of cabernet sauvignon on the planet! says Matthew Kaner, host and producer for SOMM TV and the 2013 Food & Wine Sommelier of the Year. Indeed, its hard to imagine a better standard-bearer of old-school cabernet sauvignon than the region of Pauillac, home to some of the most legendary and storied red wine producers in Bordeauxand one producer crafting their cab-dominant blends in a consistently traditional fashion is Château Lynch-Bages.

I love this style of cabernet for having a gentle ripeness of fruit, while also capturing the terroir so well, says Kaner. As Château Lynch-Bages ages, it gains an incredible peatiness, kind of like Islay Scotch! I love it so much.

Our Cabernet Sauvignons garner their style from the diverse array of vineyards in Napas mountain, benchland and valley floor areas. Within each of these unique topographies, we focus on locations with well drained, nutrient deprived soils that can stress the vines. With proper farming, the grapes from these locations possess extraordinary concentration of flavor, color, and texture. Cabernet Sauvignon does not lend itself to vineyard designation. Quite the contrary. Cab thrives when blending multiple vineyard sites especially in places as diverse as Napa Valley with its multitude of soils, slopes, and pockets of unique weather.

Our approach is to create a perfect balance in this Cab by marrying the weight and firm tannins of the mountains with the supple fruit forward notes of the valley floor and honoring the natural acidity.

Review: Richmond Hill Takes Us On Melancholy Colorful Road Trip

Leaving Iowa features Don Faust, left, Leslie Day, Pam Kobre, and Kevin Babbitt.

The new show at Richmond Hill in Geneseo the family-friendly comedy Leaving Iowa is definitely a mixed bag, in good and not so good ways.

The nostalgic memory play by Tim Clue and Spike Manton is set both in the present day and in whiplash-inducing flashbacks the summer of a 1984 during a family vacation from Winterset, Iowa to Hannibal, Mo.

Leaving Iowa focuses on the road trip with the parents and their two kids, and is narrated by the only named character, Don Browning , and he, his sister and mom are played by the same actors in their then-and-now versions. Don is on his own modern-day journey to take his fathers ashes to his childhood home, as well as a way to breach the chasm between himself and Dad.

The kaleidoscopic, affectionate play is billed as a toast to the idealism and character of parents from the greatest generation, and a frantic roast of their dedication to the family road trip. It was nominated Best New Play in the Country by the Detroit Free Press and one of SoCal Theaters 10 Most Memorable Moments of the year after its run at the Laguna Playhouse.

A show suitable for ages 10 to 100, Leaving Iowa is a postcard to anyone who has ever found themselves driving alone on a road, revisiting fond memories of their youth.
