Streetfood – Penang – 10 June 08 – Part 2

Completed in 1886 by a student of Gustave Eiffel, Porto’s most eye-catching bridge is a city icon. It was built to replace a precarious crossing between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia made from old port boats lashed together most would agree that its curving arch;adds a definite something to the cityscape. From the upper deck, the views over the river and old town are stunning, as are the daredevils who leap from the lower level into the river.

Big Grocery Stores Stocking Shelves With More Local Products

“The wine is made locally, at Greenville’s only winery.”

That was the pitch Anita Tamme made to convince a team of BI-LO representatives that her wine should be carried in the grocery chain’s Upstate stores.

Tamme was among 29 making pitches at a BI-LOcal event in Greenville last week. It was the first of many the company is holding here to meet growing customer demand for local products, said Nicole Hatfield, senior manager for local business for BI-LO.

Farmers markets have surfed a wave of popularity, and now, larger grocery stores are tapping into consumers’ passion for locally made products, too. Stores like BI-LO, Ingles and Whole Foods, which have carried items from local producers for years, are stepping up their efforts and making sure the public knows about it.

It’s a wise move. In a 2012 Mintel International study, 52 percent of U.S. consumers said that buying local produce is more important than buying organic, a shift from several years before.

“For years people wanted organic,” said Martin Eubanks, assistant commissioner for the South Carolina Department of Agriculture, “but then people realized organic is part of it, but we’ve got all these other good local products, too.

“Consumers have zoned in because they know food is fresher, they know it’s closer to home, they know it’s good for the environment and there is a trust factor with that local producer,” he said.

“There’s opportunity there and there’s growth potential,” Eubanks said.

Where To Buy Now: Mimico Because Its One Lakefront Revitalization Thats On Schedule

Many west-end neighbourhoods close to the core have their waterfront views blocked by the Gardiner. Mimico, on the other hand, is south of the highway and right on the lake. Mansions make up much of the lakeside real estate, but the area has abundant bungalows and two-storey homes with generous yards. For first-time buyers and empty nesters, condos are moving into the eastern edge of the pocket.

Mimicos overall feel is small town in the big city. Were entrenched in the lake, says Kathleen Burke of Lakeshore Arts, a not-for-profit that boosts local culture with community programming, outdoor film festivals, art shows and photography workshops for teens. Mimicos almost like a little island.

Riffing off the view that art is a lever for business growth, Lakeshore Arts teamed up with the neighbourhood BIA, developers and the city to create Mimico Square, a new waterfront park and performance space that opened in 2010. The area is part of an $18-million expansion that adds green space and cantilevered boardwalks.

Cityscape: Comfort food and more at Sunshine Kitchen

Lonely Planet Writer

Longterm rival to lovely Lisbon, the historic city of Porto has long drawn in visitors with its cafe culture, historic buildings, fine wines and old-Europe charm. Rows of slender buildings are squeezed together along narrow cobbled streets, washing dangles from wrought-iron balconies, and locals beat the heat of the day in alfresco cafes, sipping espresso and Douro Valley vino.

For visitors, this is a place to feast; the city is awash with old-school taverns, swish gourmet restaurants and locals hangouts serving tasty petiscos . The city is small enough to highlight-hop in a couple of days, but intricate enough to explore for weeks and there’s plenty to do for free. City Scape Winery Expanding With 10000

City Scape Winery is planning to expand with a new 10,000-square-foot tasting room and production building at its 12-acre location on Dunklin Bridge Road in Pelzer, South Carolina.

The small craft winery is also looking to donate a 2,600-square-foot four-bedroom home, which currently sits on the site of the planned tasting room.

Were still looking at the logistics on getting the home taken apart and moved, said owner Josh Jones, but our goal is to get that home to somebody in need.

City Scape Winery has seen business steadily increase since Jones bought the business from its longtime owners Wayne and Anita Tamme in 2015. A California native, Jones had been working as an engineer at Michelin and part-time wedding photographer when he and his family moved to South Carolina, where they began to learn to make homemade wine in their kitchen with the help of the Tammes. When the Tammes decided to retire, they suggested Jones purchase the business.

Over the next five years, City Scape has gone from producing 14,000 bottles a year to more than 50,000 bottles, and its wine is now sold in more than 80 stores throughout the state.

I think people are starting to pay attention to what the state can offer in terms of the quality of wine processed here, Jones said.

Sine taking over City Scape Winery, Jones father, mother, sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew have moved to South Carolina to help run the business with him.

In the summer, City Scape offers lighter, sweeter varietals; the winter brings classic, more traditional wines. Oenophiles stopping by the winery can typically sample up to twelve of City Scape’s wines, or peruse the retail store for its extensive inventory of winemaking supplies, including extracts, flavorings, yeast, and wine kits.

Young Winery Owners Growing Industry In Upstate South Carolina

April 13, 2018 by onthevineNo Comments

In January, when vineyards are dormant and the grapes have been picked and crushed and the juices are working, it is the time when those who work so hard to create the wines take a break. For Josh and Deb Jones and their pet pig, Pinot, that meant a trip from City Scape Winery in Greenville, South Carolina, to the Yadkin Valley wine region.

Pinot frequently greets guests at City Scape Winery. Deb Jones said he is a celebrity at the upstate destination, one of just 14 wineries in South Carolina. He does tricks for customers, and he likes to hike and is very social, she said.

We never regret bringing Pinot to things. He brings so much joy to people, Deb Jones said.

Pinot isnt the only unique thing about City Scape, though.

With no glass recycling program in Greenville, the Joneses decided to offer a way for their customers to exchange their bottles and encouraging recycling of the wine bottles. Customers purchase the wine, take it home, drink it, then rinse the bottle and return it to the winery to get $1 off of the next visit.

It keeps them out of the landfill, said Deb Jones.

The vineyard wasnt planted originally by the Joneses, who said they are the youngest winery owners in the southeast. They were 29 when they bought City Scape.

We took 10 gallons of merlot juice home and made it.

Through the years, theyve traveled to Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Willamette Valley, Spain, Portugal and Italy to study and learn about wines.

This New Guide Deciphers Wineries And Wine Bars In Lisbon

In the introduction to her new book Wine In Lisbon, 29-year old author Ana Cristina Marques thanks Bacchus for inventing wine sold by the glass. Not only does this allow for a variety of economical tastings but, is the perfect excuse to take colleagues, friends and family to yet another wine bar, she writes.

Portugals capital city of Lisbon offers plenty of wine bars to visit. One reason is due to natural resources: although Portugal is not a large country it is home to some 250 indigenous wine grape varieties.

Wine In Lisbon describes wineries, wine bars and wine stores within and around the city

Over several months, while working with two photographers, Marques visited 16 wineries, 30 wine bars and 10 wine stores in the region of Lisbon;to research this guide which is published separately in both Portuguese and English. This easy to carry manual illustrates inner and outer Lisbon cityscape wine routes with maps, excellent photographs and succinct text.

Marques was born in Estoril and is emphatic that she is a journalist, not a wine critic. Marques writes about wine for the Observador newspaper and has written for various magazines that include Volta do Mundo, Noticias and Evasôes. This background provided her with insight on how to present unpretentious and amusing information that she hopes will leave readers, she writes, with a long aftertaste and a desire for a second glass.

Cityscape Announces Wine On The Westside Details

COOKEVILLE Wine on the WestSide, one of Cookevilles largest annual social events benefitting charities, is set for Saturday, Aug. 10. This will be the ninth year for the popular event, but this year local nonprofit CityScape takes over as the host organizer.

CityScape is so proud to be hosting this event, partly because our office is located in the heart of the WestSide, said CityScape Executive Director Laura Wolf.;Our mission as a Tennessee Main Street community is to keep our downtown buildings occupied and to provide memorable events that take place in the heart of our downtown.

The event will be held, as always, in the streets of Cookevilles historic WestSide district. Portions of Cedar and Broad streets will be blocked off to allow patrons to leisurely stroll through and sample various wine and beer offerings , listen to music from two stages, and enjoy local food options.

A significant portion of the proceeds from the event will be distributed to local nonprofits Genesis House and Rails for Trails. Each organization participates heavily in the planning and implementation of the event.

I am so impressed with the volunteers from Genesis House and Rails for Trails, added Wolf. Many of these people have been participating in this event for years, and they already have made the planning process so much easier with their knowledge and their willingness to jump in and help.
