Why King Crabs Legs Should Be Frozen

Does Costco Have A Food Shortage?

Now everyone can have their own opinionbut heres the deal. For some reason consumers feel like they are buying fresh food when its cold and ready to cook and theres a perception that frozen means its preserved or somehow not fresh. But when it comes to King Crab Legs, thats simply not true. King Crab legs are precooked and are frozen on the ship when they are caught. Yep. EVERY SINGLE KING CRAB LEG IN THE UNITED STATES WAS ONCE FROZEN.

ALL King Crab Legs are flash frozen ON THE SHIP when they are caught. That means no matter where you buy or eat your King Crab Legs be it the fanciest seafood restaurant in NYC or from the freezer in Costcothey were ALL wild caught and cooked and frozen on the ship and shipped frozen. So theres no reason to buy them defrosted because it just means you have a ticking time bomb for them to go bad. And trust me, they go bad quickly. In fact, they could even be bad when you buy them.

You simply cannot know exactly how long theyve been defrosted. And if youre buying hundreds of dollars in seafood for a special dinner and you open up the package and it stinks, youre going to be angry. And disappointed.

Yes, Costco carries King Crab Legs year-round. During the summer and holidays you can find smaller 2-3 lb packages of King Crab Legs in the meat section, but there are generally 10 lb boxes frozen in the freezer aisle or you can order frozen king crab legs with shipping at Costco.com.

Kirkland Signature Carneros Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is one of the top wine varieties for many connoisseurs, and they certainly wont be disappointed by the Kirkland Signature Carneros bottle.

Hailing from Carneros in Californias Napa Valley, this lovely red wine can only be found in Costco and with a price tag of under $10 it represents amazing value for money.

The Carneros region is known for its unique climate. Thanks to the regular cool fogs and cool winds, this is one of the best places to grow Pinot Noir grapes.

This beverage combines elegance with richness, counterbalancing the forest floor and black fruit notes with the tartness of ripe rhubarb and cherry for the perfect blend. Since this wine is also aged in French oak barrels, theres a nice spicy overtone to savor on the palate.

Recommended: Dom Perignon from Costco you say? We’ve tried it! Read our review.

With its 14.5% alcohol content, this pleasing wine is balanced and smooth with a medium to full body and a dry, long finish. This wine is best savored, since it only gains in complexity the longer you leave it in the glass. This is certainly not a wine to rush, and it should be sipped slowly alongside red meats or barbecues.

Found on Costcos shelves for only $10, this classic Zinfandel comes from the Costco home brand Kirkland.

While sometimes home brand varieties can be poor quality, dont be put off – Kirkland wine is definitely worth a try thanks to its rich flavor and, of course, its impressive value for money.

This wine comes from Californias well-known wine country, Sonoma County, and is produced from an estate of vineyards which have been the home of zinfandel wines for a century and a half.

The vines used to produce this fine wine have an average age of 45 years, and perhaps this is why this classic wine has such a delectable bouquet and delicious flavor on the palate.

Affording deep, opaque shades of red-purple fruits, this wine offers notes of blueberry, cassis and blackberry with chocolate and vanilla overtones.

The Best Wines At Costco Right Now Ranked

Costco is more than a bargain-buying warehouse. Its an international phenomenon. So loyal are its fans, the conglomerate has inspired accounts and blogs unaffiliated with its business yet devoted to sharing its wares and wines.

Costcos wine selection includes its own Kirkland brand, as well as bottles from other producers. Wine is sourced from hundreds and hundreds of wineries around the world, Annette Alvarez Peters, assistant general manager of wine at Costco, tells VinePair in an email. This includes most of the major wine growing regions, from California to Washington to France.

Distribution varies by region, state, and even store. In addition, Peters says, since we have a treasure hunt mentality, we are constantly rotating our items in and out of our system. So, stock can be difficult to pin down, but shoppers can trust certain guidelines. Kirkland Signature wines seems to be pretty widely distributed, and are almost always a very good buy and a good representation of region or varietal, Andrew Cullen, founder of CostcoWineBlog.com, tells VinePair in a phone interview. But, he warns, Like anything else at Costco it moves fast.

Costco could not share pricing, so average U.S. retail prices below are sourced via Wine-Searcher. However, it is worth noting that Costco prices are often discounted, so its possible a $20 wine on this list could be found between $10 to $15.

Dr Hain’s Wine Selection System

My criteria for wine are rather simple – -nothing fancy like “nose” or “fruity” or whatever — just these much simpler constraints:

  • Does it contain enough alcohol
  • How bad a headache do I get in the near future and next morning ? — In other words, how toxic is the wine ? The “one glass-headache test” means that — if I drink one glass of wine, will I wake up the next morning with a headache ? If this happens to me, I throw the bottle out or use it for cooking. If I get a headache in 1 hour, throw it out again. As some people seem to be able to put down 20 beers in a night, and I can get sick from one glass of wine, perhaps I am a “canary in the coal mine”.
  • Of course, if you overdo it, any wine will give you a hangover. Still, some seem to be a lot more toxic than others.
  • According to a wine seller who visited me in the clinic , toxicity is mainly related to sulfites. “Cheap” wines have more sulfites, and cause more headaches. According to this person, sulfites are added to cheaper wines to accelerate the process of getting them to market. This may relate to why cheaper wines are more dangerous. Interestingly, all of the wine merchants that I have seen as patients claim that they drink very little wine. Regarding the sulfite theory, there is absolutely no published evidence that this is true.
  • According to neurologists , toxicity depends on:
  • The amount you drink . Obviously more is worse.
  • Does it have a screw-top ? A cork ? A plastic “cork” ?

Owen: The palate is quite sweet and overripe, with red fruits and cola tones. This does not deliver much for the price compared to the other wines. Drink 2020-2023. Verdict: Not recommended.

Tan: Its not as bad as last years, but it doesnt move the needle enough for a recommended buy. It tastes like a flat cherry cola. Man, I love Russian River pinots as much as I love those from Ribbon Ridge. I encouraged first-timers to seek out Russian River wines, just not this one. Verdict: Not recommended.

Costco Wine The 2021 Guide To The Best Wines At Costco

Costco® is the number one wine retailer in the U.S. and just one look at their low wine prices should tell you why! Read on for our Complete Guide to Costco Wine.

The reason for those low prices is simply the tremendously slim margin Costco takes thanks to their membership model. Basically they make their money on membership fees allowing them to keep product prices, including those on wine , very low. Their selection isn’t the broadest but they do tend to bring in some very nice wines from all over the world , especially in the under $20 price point.

While most of the Costco wines are available elsewhere keep your eyes out for deals on lesser-known labels as well. Inventory of wines will vary by market and even by store within a market so at times you can find some low production wines available in an individual store. Also in some states you don’t even need a membership to shop the store!

Wines In The Costco Wine Advent Calendar Box:

  • Strut King Chardonnay from Italy – not a bad start! This is a decent, fruity, un-oaked Chardonnay.
  • Portrait of a Wallflower Merlot or Old Soul Merlot from France . We received the Portrait of a Wallflower Merlot. Let’s just say the Old Soul Merlot HAS to be better.
  • Stacks & Stones Sauvignon Blanc from France – a nice aroma but a bit thin and watery on the palate.
  • Voldé Cabernet Sauvignon from Moldova – Moldova, which is in-between Ukraine and Romania, isn’t the first place you would think of for Cabernet Sauvignon. This won’t change that. It’s too bad, it would have been nice to showcase a native Moldovan variety here.
  • Shadow Dance Chenin Blanc from South Africa – another letdown. We love South African Chenin Blanc but this is not a good example.
  • Mendoza Nights Malbec from Argentina or Magical Nights Pinot Noir from France. We received the Mendoza Nights Malbec and we mostly liked it. Probably our favorite so far, although that isn’t saying a whole lot.
  • Pastello Pinot Grigio from Italy – it’s OK.
  • Even Steven Torrontés from Argentina or Even Steven Bordeaux Blanc from France – We received the Torrontés and it’s not really good but not really bad either. A very Sauvignon Blanc-like example of Torrontés.
  • Azzimato Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from Italy – Finally! A after a little time to breathe this is pretty nice.
  • Timok River Semi-Sweet Riesling from Bulgaria – After finally getting a good bottle , I think we just hit a new low here.
  • Michael David Winery Petite Petit 2017

Inky purple with prune, fig, and raisin aromas and flavors, this Petite Sirah from Lodi, Calif., is fun to drink and easy to love, one taster said. Our panel predicted it will appeal to fans of Amarone. One such panelist added, I think its incredible. Buy this one in bulk, another said. Average U.S. retail price: $15.

Costco’s Ultimate Wine: The Sinegal Family’s Own Cabernets

Beth Cook, Director of Hospitality for SinegalEstate, holding the original key to theVictorian house on the estate – whichnow serves as the brand’s logo

Sinegal’s production has now grown from 2,200 cases when I wrote this article originally in 2017 to 6,500 in 2019. The increased production comes from purchased grapes. Only two very small production wines – the Estate Cab and the Estate Cab Franc – are still from certified organic vines. Also in the interim, since 2017, Costco has stopped selling Roundup, which contains glyphosate, the subject of much concern for its carcinogenic impact, primarily on residential users and landscapers in a large number of pending lawsuits.
