  • At its core, Court of Masters is service oriented. This path is great for wine professionals in the service industry working as a sommelier.
  • The WSET program is communications oriented. The program is great for sales representatives, other wine trade, and educators.
  • CMS plays to the strengths of the independent learner, requiring self study and self education, followed by a 1-3 day course and exam.
  • WSET is great for learners who like the structure of a formal class with time in between to absorb and reflect.
  • CMS requires students to pass each course before moving to the next. WSET is a multi-level program that doesnt require prerequisites.

How long does it take to become a certified sommelier?

It depends on you! That being said, expect most certification programs to take one year or more.

Students Who Successfully Complete The Introductory Examination Have Achieved The Following:

  • Received intensive instruction from a team of Master Sommeliers
  • Received an overview of all the major wine growing regions of the world, as well as key information on spirits, beer, saké and correct wine service
  • Passed the Introductory Sommelier Examination
  • Are capable of discussing and serving with confidence a comprehensive range of beverages
  • Learned the Court of Master Sommeliers Deductive Tasting Method . The DTM is an integral part of the Certified, Advanced and Master Sommelier Diploma Examinations.
  • Skills acquired during the Introductory Sommelier Course will enable Sommeliers to recognize wine quality at a basic level
  • Received appropriate direction in preparing for the Certified Sommelier Examination, which is the prerequisite for undertaking study for the Advanced and Master Sommelier levels.

Guild of Sommelier Education Foundation: SommFoundation offers scholarship opportunities to those working toward success with the Court of Master Sommeliers. They offer scholarships for the Introductory, Advanced, and Masters. They also provide the top scorer at the Certified Examination with a scholarship. How Many Sommeliers Are There

We put together a master sommelier list that includes every master sommelier in the world. It also includes which master sommeliers were issued their diplomas from the Americas chapter of the CMS.

At present, there are 269 Master Sommeliers across the world. Looking at the numbers, about five people per year earn the title. Of those 269, 172 are from North and South America. Or, at least their Master Sommelier diploma was issued from the Court of Master Sommeliers Americas chapter. Thatâs about 64% of the worldâs Master Sommeliers.

Training To Be A Sommelier And The Sommelier Levels

There is no one way to gain the skills needed to be a competent and successful sommelier. While many sommeliers have no formal training, increasing numbers are turning to accredited qualifications as part of their development. The two main providers of certifications for sommeliers are the Court of Master Sommeliers and the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, with sommeliers often choosing to pursue both paths of study.

The Court of Master Sommeliers is the main educational organisation for wine service professionals, established in 1977 to encourage quality standards for beverage service in hotels and restaurants. Their programmes place an emphasis on technical service skills, significant producers and vintage ratings in addition to product and tasting knowledge.

For CMS programmes students mostly self-study with some face-to-face instruction for selected levels prior to examination.

The Sommelier Levels

Sommelier Levels refer to the four sommelier certifications which can be completed with the Court of Master Sommeliers. The four certifications must be completed sequentially.

Since there are no legal certification requirements to becoming a sommelier, you have some alternatives to taking a course of study and passing an examination. In some cases, extensive experience may go farther toward getting you a job than an official certificate or diploma.
