Collectible fine wine has inherent value and real value. Inherent value comes from the wine itself. The way it was made, including the terroir on which the grapes were grown, the classification of the wine, the producers reputation, and the techniques the winemakers used to process the grapes all give the wine inherent value. Real value comes from what happens after the wine is already bottled, such as how it was stored and how many owners it has had in its lifetime.
A wine must have both of these types of value in order to sell for the highest profit. Look at the list of qualities below, and count how many accurately describe your wine:
The Backstory To Selling Wine From Canada
Having managed wine storage facilities in Canada since 2004, and working on private cellars across the country, we frequently get asked to assist collectors in sell some or all of their wine. Typical reasons include estate sales, health matters, divorce, debt, etc. Many people realize that their palate has changed since they started collecting and theyre long in California Cabernet, for example, a wine they no longer enjoy.

The wine would come to our facility in Toronto for inventory and photography. It would then ship to a facility in Buffalo, NY where is would be held until sold. Title would pass in the United States through our US retail liquor license and the seller would be paid in USD from our US corporation.

Be Specific About The Bottle Type
A Bordeaux bottle is different from a Riesling bottle which is different from a Champagne bottle. You can absolutely sell a mixed box, but since youll probably be selling in smaller quantities than corks you should get specific as to exactly what you have. Good news: unlike their corks, Champagne bottles do sell!

In some cases, he says, they can run circles round new spirits. He has been collecting and selling vintage products for the last 15 years and is able to view the antique side of his business on a global level. His verdict on the UK makes for painful reading on the old spirits front: as a country, it has been excruciatingly slow on the up-take.

What Happens After Your Buyer Bids
If you sell your wine via auction house or online marketplace, shipping is usually already included. The professional sellers already have contracts with shipping companiesyou simply supply the wine. However, if you decide to sell the wine on your own, youll need to consider a complex set of legal steps before your buyer can buy it. You must:
- Get a wine-selling license through your state
- Get approval from your state to ship wine to your buyers location
- Check that your buyers state allows wine shipments
- Contact a trustworthy shipping company
- Pack the wine according to the companys standards
- Send the wine to your buyer

How Do I Get My Wine To The Auction House
Once you have provided a list of wines to the auction house and have agreed on which wines you will sell and the commission the auction house will get, the next step is to prepare your wines for travel to the auction house.
If you are local to the auction house, a representative from the auction house may come to your home to box up the wines.;Typically this representative will have some wine boxes like the ones below to pack up your wines.
If you are working with a wine auction house that asks you to ship the wine, they may provide similar boxes. Otherwise, you can purchase these boxes and inserts for shipping.
The Man Who Duped Millionaires Into Paying Big Bucks For Fake Wine

He was the man with “the nose of a blood hound,” as one wine critic once put it.
Rudy Kurniawan was once the toast of the fine-wine world, renowned for his ability to find some of the rarest and priciest wines in the world.
He was also, prosecutors alleged, a fraud who duped some of the country’s wealthiest wine purchasers with counterfeit bottles of wine that he manufactured in his home laboratory.
And on Wednesday, a Manhattan jury agreed, finding Kurniawan guilty of fraud in connection with selling counterfeit wines and of defrauding a finance company.
The sensational trial began Dec. 9 in a Manhattan federal court. Prosecutors have argued that Kurniawan used his exceptional palate to blend together younger wines with older French wines of poor vintage. He then slapped counterfeit labels on the bottles, prosecutors say, and passed them off as some of the rarest wines on Earth. When these bottles turned up at auctions, the excitement of coming across them often overshadowed bidders’ skepticism of whether they were the real thing.
Among those who believed they were duped is billionaire industrialist Bill Koch yes, a brother to those Kochs who said he spent $2.1 million on 219 bottles of Kurniawan’s wine.
“I’ve never known him not to bring a bottle,” testified Truly Hardy, director of auction operations for Acker Merrall & Condit.

After the conclusion of the auction, you will get an email outlining either your sales or the entire auction catalog and the sales price of each wine at auction.;Within a couple of weeks you typically receive and email with a list of your wines and their selling price, as well as an indication of when your payment is coming. What Is A Mature Spirit
When does a spirit officially become ‘vintage’? It’s rather like the question of when old age begins, and the answer is that it’s different for everyone. But it’s good to have a benchmark.
