How To Open A Wine Bottle With A Lighter

This is our favorite way to open a wine bottle without a wine opener. But please be careful. It involves fire.

First, remove the foil or wax to expose the cork. Then use a lighter and apply the flame on the neck of the bottle, just beneath where the cork is. The idea is to heat the air beneath the cork. This causes the air to expand and push the cork upward.

Rotate the placement of the lighter around the bottleâs neck to make sure youâre heating all the air. In a minute or two, youâll see the cork creeping upwards and out.

This is our preferred method because thereâs no risk in breaking the cork and it’s nothing something you learn about wine from a book.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

The way to never get caught out, of course, is to always carry a corkscrew with you. That’s not as difficult as it sounds. I have a Victorinox Swiss Army Multi-tool Pocket Knife which I take with me everywhere. I used to keep it in the central console of the car, but later fastened it to my key ring, so that now I’m never without a corkscrew .

If you are going to buy a Swiss Army Knife with a view to opening wine, it’s worth spending a little more money, in my experience, as the corkscrew tool often breaks with the cheaper pocket knives. I bought my Victorinox nearly five years ago, it follows a classic design and is a quality product, and everything still works great, including the corkscrew!

There are also some great key chain wine-opening tools available that are focused entirely on unscrewing bottles, they are usually less bulky than multi-tool pocket knives as well as more affordable.

Another tip is to always to keep a corkscrew in your car when traveling, the glove box, central console, or trunk are all good places. It’s amazing how many times it can come in handy!

Using A Sword Or A Big Knife

Sabrage;requires skill and is completely different from merely hacking. It is often seen during occasions like weddings and other celebratory events.

While a sword is not a common household item, it is officially being used to open a wine bottle. Should you find yourself in a corkscrew-less situation and theres a sword lying around, heres how to use it:

a.) Chill the bottle. The colder the neck of the bottle, the better your chances of removing the top.

b.) Find an open space. Better yet, do it outside your house.

c.) Wipe away any moisture on the bottle and remove the foil and wire basket.

d.) Locate one of the seams on the bottle. Its where the two halves of the bottle join together. This is also the weakest part of the bottle that you will be targeting.

e.) Hold the bottle at a 30-degree angle with the seam facing upward and the cork higher than the bottom of the bottle.

f.) Rest the blade of the sword flat against the neck of the bottle. The dull edge of the blade should be facing in the direction of the cork.

g.) Practice sliding the sword from the base of the bottle to the annulus .

h.) With a single firm and confident stroke, slide the sword down the seam and hit the annulus. The bottle should break cleanly and the cork should go flying.

i.) Inspect the neck of the glass for shards and wipe it off carefully with a cloth if necessary.

To help, we’ve outlined the steps for 8 of the safest, most foolproof ways to open wine bottles!

Opening A Wine Bottle Using A Screwdriver Or A Toothbrush

When nothing works directly, and you are running out of these things, then also you can have your wine. All it matters is the wine, no matters how it comes. So be a thug and get rid of the crock. Just push the cork inside the bottle using a screwdriver or a toothbrush or anything that can push it inside. Place the object in the middle of the cork and push it side. Keep pushing it until it ultimately falls in the wine. Of course, it will float on the surface, but it wont be any obstacle as it will get to the bottom of the bottle when you move the container to pour wine into the glass.

So thats it. You dont have to worry about the cork from now on. When there is a will, there is a way, they said. Well said. Not all good things come to an end.

If youâve got a wax-sealed wine bottle, you may be tempted to cut through the wax as if it were foil. You should follow that temptation. Because that is the correct thing to do.

There may be a pull-tab on the wax, too. If so, great. Pull that and youâll be able to remove the wax easily. But if not, just cut the wax cleanly with your corkscrewâs knife around the bottleâs neck. Then youâll be able to lift off the top of the wax like foil. Then itâs business as usual.

If you’re all out of keys and have tried the slapping methods above, chances are you do have a knife of some kind nearby. Though serrated is best, you can wiggle a wine cork out with any knife, much like with the key method.

As CrazyRussianHacker demonstrates, stick the knife in the cork and carefully move it in a twisting motion. As you twist it, pull up, and the cork will begin to rise. Once it’s out about an inch, stab the cork on its side and turn until it’s completely free of the bottle. Watch your fingers though!

Don’t have a wall? Or maybe you’re in a hotel with neighbors on the other side of the wall. Either way, this is a way to use your shoe to tap out the cork without making much noise. Fair warning, though: you’ll need to be extremely vigilant about how far the cork moves with every tap.

  • For this, you’ll need a towel, a shoe like the one mentioned above, and a chair.
  • Wrap the bottom of the wine bottle with the towel.
  • While seated, put the bottle between your legs with the bottom facing up.
  • With your shoe, tap the bottom of the bottle until you see the cork come partway out.
  • Make sure to check the cork before every tap; the worst-case scenario here is for the cork to come out all the way, spilling the wine.

Twist It Out With Keys Or A Serrated Knife

This method is somewhat similar to the first option, in which a screw and hammer are used to yank out the cork. This time, however, just plunge your keys or a serrated knife into the cork at a 45-degree angle and move the top of the item in a circle, essentially twisting the cork out slowly. After a couple rotations, the cork should come out. Make sure you really get your item into the cork because if you dont, the cork could crumble.

How To Open A Sparkling Wine Bottle

The process is different if youâre trying to figure out how to open a Roscato wine bottle. Or any other screw-capped or pressurized sparkling wine bottle.

First, always keep the bottle pointed away from guests and keep a thumb or hand on the cork at all times. Then remove the foil by either pulling on the tab or cutting it cleanly at the bottom of the cage. Untwist the wire cage and loosen it for removal. Tighten your grip on the cork and, holding the bottle at a 45-degree angle, twist the bottle . Do so until the cork is released and let the CO2 rush quiet.

Two things should be re-emphasized here. The wire cage shouldnât be removed until after the cork is released from the bottle. And the bottle should be twisted, not the cork.
