Francis Ford Coppola Unveils Plans For His New Sonoma Winery

Francis Ford Coppola has taken time off from one big projectthe filming of his new movie, Youth Without Youth, set in Romaniaand is on to the next.

Tonight, the filmmaker-turned-vintner will celebrate his 67th birthday and introduce his new winery, located at the former Chateau Souverain facility in Geyserville, by hosting a party for 2,000 Sonomans.

The yet-to-be-named winery will be the alter ego of his Rubicon Estate in Napa Valley. While Rubicon pays tribute to the rich heritage of Inglenook, one of Napa’s legendary estates, the new winery in Sonoma will carry a simpler message about celebrating life.

“I’m a movie director, so I have to have a theme,” Coppola said in an interview on Thursday. “The theme for the Sonoma property is life. I want to create a happy Italian family feeling.”

The winery, which is being remodeled, is intended to be a tourist destination in scenic Alexander Valley, with a restaurant and tasting room. The featured wines, which are distributed nationally, will be the Francis Coppola Diamond Series of varietals, Rosso and Bianco, Sofia sparkling wines and a Director’s Reserve. The winery will also house much of the film memorabilia once displayed at Rubicon, including costumes and props from Coppola’s movies, such as The Godfather, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Tucker.

“I never intended to have a Hollywood museum at what I still call Inglenook,” said Coppola. “My goal is to do what Inglenook would have done if it hadn’t been separated.”

For Coppola, winemaking is a family legacy. When he was a kid, Coppolas grandfather and uncle made homemade wine in the basement of his familys New York apartment. Starting a winery and producing internationally distributed wines may seem like a leap from such humble beginnings, but for the six-time Oscar winner, going big was the only way.

Megalopolis: Can Francis Ford Coppolas $100m Gamble Pay Off

The auteurs long-planned passion project is finally edging toward production, an audacious gambit that he plans to mostly fund himself

When it was announced that Francis Ford Coppola might finally make his long-gestating film Megalopolis, a jolt of electric excitement went through the bodies of cineastes around the world. Like the unrealized visions of Stanley Kubricks Napoleon and Alejandro Jodorowskys Dune, it seemed as if it would only be screened in the imaginary multiplexes of cinephiles dreams. Yet, against all odds, Coppola seems to be dusting off the directors beret.

A passion project that has existed since just after the days of Apocalypse Now, its an ensemble piece involving an architect rebuilding New York City after a financial crisis cripples the metropolitan hub. Coppola had tried to get the film off the ground back in 2001, as a way of returning to original screenplays. He shot second unit footage and was eyeing a cast that included Robert De Niro and Nicolas Cage. However, the September 11 attacks put the film on indefinite hold.

This week, Coppola announced that hes ready to shoot the movie in fall 2022. He has been courting the likes of Oscar Isaac, Zendaya and Cate Blanchett to star alongside Godfather alumni James Caan. And he seems prepared to entirely self-finance the movies $100 to $120m budget with the money made from his winery.

Between The Godfather And Apocalypse Now Coppola Made Wine

In 1972, Coppola directed The Godfather, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1973. He directed the sequel in 1974, and the following year he acquired the Niebaum Estate in the Napa Valley, where the family continues to make wine to this day. He filed for a winery license in 1978 and, in 1979, the Coppola family wine business began under the Niebaum-Coppola name. That same year, Apocalypse Now was released, winning Coppola the Academy Award for Best Director in 1980. The Francis Ford Coppola Winery brand, however, wasnt established until July of 2010.

Francis Ford Coppola Pays $325 Million For Prized Napa Vineyard

Director and vintner Francis Ford Coppola and a partner acquired one of the most sought-after vineyards in Napa Valley, paying a reported $31.5 million for the J.J. Cohn Vineyard, in Rutherford.

Coppola — the famous filmmaker who owns Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery, also in Rutherford — won a bidding war that reportedly started at $24 million and that attracted offers from some of Napa’s largest wine companies.

The high-priced bidding cooled speculation that Napa Valley vineyard prices might soften given the current economic climate.

The Cohn property encompassed about 84 acres of vineyard land and a large house. Coppola’s partner in the deal, Bret Lopez, who is one of the Cohn family heirs, retained the home and 24 acres.

Coppola acquired 60 acres, including 46 acres of Cabernet and Merlot, along with land suitable for planting more vineyards, said Niebaum-Coppola winemaker Scott McLeod. The purchase brings Coppola’s vineyard holdings in Rutherford — an important Cabernet district in the heart of Napa Valley — to about 260 acres.

“We’re thrilled to have it,” McLeod said. “Besides the obvious, which is additional Cabernet, the vineyard gives us flexibility to choose which lots we want for our .” The grapes will go into Niebaum-Coppola’s Cask Cabernet bottling and its proprietary red table wine, called Rubicon, which sells for around $100 a bottle and is among Napa’s top Cabernet-based wines.

The Winery Has Won Awards Of All Kinds

It has also won some more unique accolades, including a Green Medal Award for sustainability. The Francis Ford Coppola Winery was also named Best Place to Play Bocce Ball in the Press Democrat newspapers 2020 Best of Sonoma County competition .

The Devil Is In The Detail

Delicato has been in a period of phenomenal growth, led by Bota Box. The company increased its total production by 50 percent in two years to 16 million cases, according to Wine Business Monthly. More than half of that is Bota Box it also makes the popular brands , and .

Delicato, founded in Manteca in 1924, is still owned and run by the Indelicato family. Chris Indelicato is CEO, his brother Jay Indelicato is COO and their cousin Marie Indelicato Mathews is chair of the board. It moved its headquarters to Napa in 2000 and purchased in Napa in 2010, but Delicato has been slower than most big wine companies in the move upscale. The Coppola purchase is significantly bigger than Black Stallion for upscale wines, both in size and name recognition.

Delicato has a lot of production capacity, with two wineries on the in addition to its wineries in Manteca and Napa. Jon Moramarco, managing partner of wine industry analyst company bw166, said Delicato might move some of Coppola’s production to its facilities.

“Coppola uses some other wineries to make wine for them and bottle for them,” Moramarco said. “Delicato can bring most of that in-house. Synergies may mean some losses of jobs. They don’t need to duplicate things. They also have some additional negotiating capacity with their distributors.”

“There’s value in going upscale,” Moramarco told Wine-Searcher. “But they need to maintain a focus on wines under $10 that are appealing to younger consumers. The future depends on it.”

Delicato Family Wines To Acquire Francis Ford Coppola Winery

The deal, which is still subject to regulatory approval, also includes the Francis Ford Coppola Winery facilities, the Virginia Dare Winery in Geyserville, CA, and the Archimedes Vineyard, located in Sonoma County.

The financial terms have yet to be disclosed, but the deal is expected to be finalised in July.

If approved, it will reportedly make Delicato founded in 1924 and best known for brands such as Bota Box, 1924, and Three Finger Jack the fifth largest supplier of all U.S. wine above $11, the fifth largest supplier by volume across all price segments, and the third largest exporter of California wines.

Delicato also has brands across California, Germany, and Chile.

The Coppola brands, like the Diamond Collection the number three brand in the United States super-premium category will further round out Delicatos portfolio and bolster annual production, which is around 17 million cases currently.

Theres a lot of synergies and their portfolio really does complement ours, said Delicato spokesman Brent Dodd.

Where there are opportunities in Delicatos portfolio, they fit those opportunities, and thats what were very much excited about. Were not having to battle against our own strong brands.

When you look at his influence and his creativity in the industry, I think were excited to tap into that part, to what hes well known for, said Dodd.
