The Signature Wine Of South Africa

Pinotage is South Africa’s signature red wine grape. A gutsy cross between pinot noir and cinsault rarely found anywhere else in the world, pinotage is a one-of-a-kind rustic red wine that is earthy, fruit-driven, and perfect for pairing with barbecue. It has slightly high alcohol levels for red wine.

Key Producers Brands And Buying Tips

Look for pinotage that is from respected vineyards since the quality can vary greatly by maker. It can be found or ordered at many wine shops, and when in doubt, consult the staff to find what you’re looking for. While not commonly found in grocery stores, it can also be ordered online. The price will range greatly depending on the quality, but pinotage is typically under-priced.

Many of the best vintages don’t make it out of South Africa, but some quality options can still be found. Especially good vintages are good for cellaring for up to 10 or even 20 years. There’s nothing quite like pinotage, but if you can’t find it, look for a fruity syrah.

Taste And Flavor Profile

Pinotage 2015

Pinotage is a dry, full-bodied, high-tannin red wine that can vary greatly in quality. Low-quality, commercial pinotage often has the unpleasant aroma of nail polish remover or rubber. High-quality vintages can have a floral, earthy nose with juicy dark and red fruit flavors like black plum, cherry, and raspberry. The best examples are balanced and relatively low in acid with an enduring sweet, smoky finish. Look for notes of oak, red pepper, tobacco, and licorice.

Pinotage is also used in red wine blends such as the classic Cape Blend. The blend, which must contain pinotage, can also incorporate reds like merlot and cabernet sauvignon.

The Epic Of Pinotage King Of The Terroirs Of South Africa

Pinotage is the result of a cross between two grape varieties. When, in 1925, Abraham Perold, a researcher at the University of Stenllenboch, developed this crossbreeding, he counted on the finesse of Pinot Noir and the robustness of Hermitage . However, when Perold leaves the university, a few Pinotage plants remained abandoned in the surrounding gardens. Other researchers grafted them to obtain Pinotage as we know it.

It was at the end of the 1950s that this grape variety and its first vintages were commercially established for the first time. The audacity to cultivate this completely unknown grape variety was rewarded 10 years later at the most prestigious competition in South Africa. It was then that many South African winegrowers began to plant Pinotage. Although its cultivation is relatively easy, its vinification requires a great deal of know-how that develops gradually over time.

In less than a century, Pinotage has contributed to the revival of South African wines.

It can be vinified mainly as red wine and rosé wine. More rarely, it can be found in sparkling wine called “Cap classique” from Champagne style winemaking and even in fortified Porto type wines.

A marked identity especially for the red wines for their aromatic complexity due to their ageing in oak barrels. The trend is to highlight the woody notes to reveal wines with strong roasting aromas.

A faraway land and flavours that will surprise the curious who are thirsty for discovery!

Pinotage Vs Pinot Noir

PINOTAGE with wine.co.za

Even though pinotage and pinot noir share similar names and parentage, they are actually very different wines. Pinot noir is typically medium-bodied with lower tannins and higher acidity. It’s redder in color with flavors of red berries and spice. Pinotage is a deeply colored and flavored wine, fuller-bodied with lower acidity and pronounced dark fruit flavors. Both pair relatively well with meat, but pinotage has the body to stand up against tangy barbecue sauce and strong spices.

Pinotage is on the march again. That was the only conclusion I could draw after a memorable lunch at Roger Jones Michelin-starred restaurant, The Harrow, in Little Bedwyn near Newbury, last month.

We drank either single varietal Pinotage or blends where Pinotage largely predominated, and were blown away by not just the quality but also how well the wines went with Jones outstanding cuisine. More on that later, but first what we drank, all available in the UK.

It has been fashionable in certain quarters often unfairly to deride Pinotage, a grape born in 1925 from a South African crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault by Abraham Perold.

While large-scale bulk production tended to yield a wine of little distinction, some wonderful examples of Pinotage were made not long after Lanzerac became the first to sell it commercially in 1959. Lanzerac and Kanonkop, were early flag-bearers and indeed still are for two of their labels made it into the 2017 ABSA top 10 Pinotage Wines, most of which were available for tasting at the lunch, courtesy of the Pinotage Association and Dr Winnie Bowman, Cape Wine Master.

What were the other eight wineries?

Delheim, Diemersfontein, Flagstone, Moreson, Neil Ellis, Stellenbosch Vineyards, Wellington Wines and Windmeul. An impressive line-up.

What Pinotage Tastes Like

The main charge levelled against Pinotage is that it smells of amyl or isoamyl acetate, otherwise known as nail polish remover or banana if youre being more polite. Its certainly true that Pinotage is distinctive: just 10% can have a marked impact on a Cape red blend but the chemical note tends to fade with age. Indeed, talk to a Pinotage specialist like Beyers Truter of Beyerskloof and hell tell you that its a sign of bad winemaking, rather than an inherent characteristic.

Blackberry, black cherry and boysenberry lead the nose of this dark and well-concentrated wine, with additional layers of mentholated herbs, licorice and earthy spice for added depth and interest. The palate is smooth and supple, with velvety tannins and medium acidity that frame the plush dark-fruit flavors. The finish is long and evolving, moving from clean black fruit expressions through sweet wood and finally ending on an earthy tobacco note. Lauren Buzzeo

Grapes And Wine Regions

Pinotage is a hybrid of pinot noir and cinsault grapes that was developed during the 1920s and rose to popularity during the 40s. The resulting fruit is so dark it is almost black, and it grows well in South Africa’s Cape. Pinotage grows best in deep soil with good water retention and as bush vines on sunny slopes, but too much sun at the end of the growing season can cause undesirable characteristics. While the vine is hearty, it is also finicky and must be well-tended to produce the best wine. Because it is primarily grown in the southern hemisphere, the growing season begins in September with harvest typically occurring in February or March.

The best pinotage comes from well-run, low output vineyards. Some have tended the same vines for over 60 years, with single vineyard and even single block wines available. Some newer wineries and winemakers are working to distinguish pinotage as a worthy grape and wine by applying expert growing and winemaking techniques. A very small amount of pinotage is grown in California, New Zealand, and a few other countries.

Tasting Notes For Pinotage

Pinotage is a dry, red wine with an unmistakable bouquet. Common descriptors include tobacco, smoke, tar, bacon, licorice, hoisin sauce and the dark fruits of plum and blackberry. The flavors are bold, and tannins are firm but ripein fact, many Pinotage wines bear more resemblance to Australian Shiraz than to Pinot Noir.

Review of Lemberg Spencer Pinotage from South Africa

I think Pinotage is capable of making very tasty wines, especially if the vines are old and its handled with care. Never forget that one of its parents is the temperamental, thin skinned Pinot Noir. Whats more, its able to be made in of a range of styles, from light and juicy to concentrated, ageworthy and profound. Just taste, say, Radford Dales Frankenstein Pinotage alongside one from Fram, Scali, Spioenkop, Kaapzicht, Beyerskloof or Delheim. Who says this is a predictable grape?

Theres a good reason that Pinotage is the third most planted red variety in South Africa after Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, with 7.4% of the countrys 99,463 hectares: its well adapted to the Capes range of climates, and produces very good reds in regions as diverse as Franschooek, Elgin, Citrusdal Mountain, Paarl, Voor Paardeberg, Swartland and Stellenbosch.

Can it make great wines? I think it can, although such a claim would be largely based on the achievements of one man, Abrie Beeslaar, who makes the wines at Kanonkop and under his own eponymous label. Kanonkops Black Label Pinotage is one of the best wines in South Africa not just the best Pinotage with a price-tag to prove it. Beeslaar, on the other hand, first made as recently as 2012, is still ludicrously cheap for what it is.

Tim Atkin MW, an awarded wine writer and leading commentator on South African wines, replies:

Professor Abraham Perold, the man who invented Pinotage, never got to taste a wine made from his own creation. The plants, grown from four seeds in his garden, were saved from oblivion by Dr Charles Niehaus, a young lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch, when Perold left to join the KWV co-operative in 1927. It wasnt until 1941, the year of Perolds death, that the first Pinotage was vinified at Elsenburg Agricultural College. By such small margins did the grape survive.

I know what youre thinking. If Perold had tried a Pinotage, hed have pulled the whole lot up and saved the world from this much-maligned crossing of Cinsault and Pinot Noir. The fact that Pinotage is barely grown outside the Cape confirms what a lot of people think: the variety isnt up to snuff. Even in South Africa it divides opinion. For every winemaker who considers it a USP, there are just as many who think that its a seconddivision variety at best.

Cape Of Good Red Wine Taste

The body of the Pinotage red wine shines in a deep and impenetrable red, in which reflections of a fruity and round structure emerge. The intense bouquet harmonizes red and dark forest fruits, plums, banana, cherry and pomegranate. If the Pinotage is matured in barrique barrels, aromas of chocolate, vanilla, coffee, mocha and spices join the soft and velvety structure. The high sugar content of the grape variety results in the high alcohol value of about 14% vol. Pinotage is well balanced with noticeably strong tannins, full body and aromatic bouquet. The dark red Pinotage is mostly vinified single varietal, however Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are considered amicable cuvée partners.
