Michigan Consumers Can Now Buy Wine Through Amazon
Amazon announced that its wine store now offers delivery to Michigan customers and includes offerings from Michigan wineries.
LANSING Wine lovers in Michigan can now order bottles online through Amazon.
The Seattle-based e-commerce website on Thursday announced that its wine store is open to Michigan customers. It also now includes offerings from Michigan wineries, a move that can help them expand their sales into more states.
Amazon currently acts as the marketplace for wineries to sell directly to consumers in 20 states.
has about 200 bottles and sampler packs available for shipment to Michigan from about 30 different wineries. The overall site offers thousands of labels from hundreds of sellers. The vast majority are domestic wines.
Wines available to Michigan buyers range from $10 to $125 per bottle. Customers can ship up to six bottles for $9.99.
Not all wines are available for shipment to Michigan since state law only allows U.S. wineries to ship wine directly to consumers with a special license. Wineries must obtain a copy of customers’ photo identification to verify they’re at least 21 years old.
So far six Michigan wineries are on Amazon: Black Star Farms, Brengman Brothers, Bowers Harbor Vineyards, Blue Water Winery, Gills Pier Vineyard & Winery and Superior Lakes. All are available for shipment in Michigan except for Superior Lakes, which can send to Florida and the District of Columbia.

Wine Ecommerce Is Growing Rapidly
Thanks to apps like Uber Eats, Postmates, and Instacart, todays consumers can have nearly any food or drink delivered directly to their door.
But what consistently remains missing from the list of these available products is alcohol.
Now, considering the regulations they have to contend with, its understandable for the average wine retailer to be slower to adopt D2C sales.
However, this isnt to say that only a handful of wine sellers are embracing ecommerce. In fact, its quite the opposite.
Last year, the volume of DtC wine shipments totaled 5.78 million, representing a 15.3% YoY increase. And the value of these shipments came in at an all-time high of $2.69 billion in 2017.
Clearly, there are plenty of brands who recognize the potential of wine ecommerce and have begun taking advantage of this selling channel.
One of the major benefits of selling online is the ability to reach a much broader audience.
Not only that, wine ecommerce can also help companies increase the loyalty of their existing customers.
Traditional advertising for example, TV commercials, print ads, and on-site events substantially limit the number of wine drinkers you can market to. For the most part, the only people you can reach are local consumers.
But digital marketing allows wine sellers to connect with potential customers all over the world.
Just as personalized marketing can bring in new customers, it can also encourage past customers to buy from you again.

How To Incentivize Customers To Buy Wine Online
Engaging in wine ecommerce can offer a lot of benefits for sellers. But in order to reap those benefits, you need to convince customers to buy from you.
Here are a few ideas:
- Allow customers to return online orders to your brick-and-mortar wine store.
- Provide free or flat-rate shipping whichever makes the most sense for your wine business.
- Send loyal customers exclusive coupons and invites for early access to special online sales.
- Email customers personalized recommendations for related products based on their past purchases.
- Connect with customers on your social media accounts and ask for their feedback about products, sales, and your brand in general.
- Encourage customers to place an online order for wine theyd previously bought at the store or tried in your tasting room by offering them a discount.
- Create educational content about wine for example, a how-to guide that helps novice wine drinkers choose between red wine and white wine or a blog a wine enthusiast can use to find similar wines they might like.
A quick note: the two things that tie all of these strategies together are data and research.
Collecting data about your audience and researching their specific wants and needs will help you make confident decisions about how to best attract and retain customers.
Communication About Wine Delivery Is Key
Given all of the above, the way we communicate with consumers about their wine delivery needs to be different. There needs to be a lot more attention to detail involved. For example:
19. Customers need reasonable expectations when it comes to delivery date and time. Of course, the carrier, not the winery, controls the delivery. Still, given that a wine delivery cannot be left and must be signed for by someone who is 21 or older, the customer needs to make reasonable arrangements to receive the package. This requires fairly precise delivery dates and times.
20. Customers must be kept updated. If, for some reason, a package cannot make those reasonable delivery dates, the customer must be made aware. Do they need to go to a facility to pick up the package? Or is it late because there was breakage, and items need to be reshipped? Is there a weather delay? Nothing is worse than anticipation that is met only with silence.
21. Communication with customers has to be done through multiple channels. The average e-retailer can get away with a few emails detailing delivery. Because there are so many more expectations around wine , anyone selling wine directly to consumers needs to avail themselves of multiple channels. Email, text, social media Direct Messages, and even phone calls are all on the table.

Wine Is About Lifestyle
Wine has way more meaning for most consumers than, say, a pair of jeans or a mixer for the kitchen. This means the expectations around a shipment of wine are going to be different:
1. Wine is usually tied to a life event. While some consumers will simply take a risk and buy a bottle of wine from an online store, sight unseen, the majority of wine shipped directly to consumers is first sampled at a winery tasting room or a special event. Thus a wine will usually be associated with the circumstances in which it is purchased: a holiday vacation to wine country, a wedding reception, etc. This means that
2. Wine is fun, and the delivery experience has to remind them of that. People love getting deliveries, but there is something special about getting a bottle of wine from your favorite winery. The unpacking experience should remind them of the good times they had, and encourage them to keep the party going.
Whats The Best Way To Start A Wine Ecommerce Website
If youre starting from scratch, your first step is to identify your target audience. Then, like any ecommerce business, youll need to determine which types of merchandise youll sell.
From there, you need to connect with a wholesaler.
Once youve built your website, select an online shopping cart and payment processing provider.
Next, decide how youll distribute your products and if it makes sense to invest in an online shipping software.
If you already have a brick-and-mortar location, then you only need to worry about building a user-friendly site, setting up an online shopping cart and payment system, and developing an efficient shipping process.

What Shipping Carriers Can I Use To Ship Wine
Unfortunately, not every carrier will ship alcohol, and others have a few requirements you must meet.
For example, you cannot ship alcohol via USPS, but you can ship wine, beer, and liquor using UPS and FedEx. Interestingly enough, the reason you cant use USPS to ship alcohol is due to a 1909 law that is still in effect.
In order to ship wine with FedEx or UPS, you must do the following:
You can visit the UPS and FedEx websites to learn more about each carriers shipping requirements.
Become Familiar With Customs Documentation
There are several different certifications and documents you must complete in order to export wine. The TTB website lists the following:
- Certificate of Free Sale.
- Sanitary Statement/Certificate.
- Certificate of Manufacturing Process.
Its the responsibility of the seller to confirm which of the above certificates are required for the country to which they want to import wine.
Selling wine internationally definitely represents a great opportunity for established businesses. But its important to know for sure whether or not the investment will justify the return.

The Privileged States That Can Buy Wine From Amazon
Amazon has launched an over the Internet wine sales operation, but don’t get too excited yet, most states still don’t allow shipping of alcohol to one’s front door.
This article is from the archive of our partner .
Though certain states can maybe expect Amazon to expand shipments to their area, others will never-ever see shipments because of strict laws that prohibit wines being shipped from certain places and to certain other places. As you can see in that map to the right from the Wine Institute, the states in red prohibit the shipment of wine in some way or another. In Utah and Kentucky it is a felony, notes The Wall Street Journal‘s Greg Bensinger. People in Alabama need ;if they want to get wine, otherwise it’s illegal. But even in those blue states, there are some restrictions that might turn Amazon off from starting up business there. In West Virginia, for example, the winery has to get a letter of approval from its own state as well as West Virginia. Furthermore, advertising the shipment of wine to residents is illegal. However, there is some hope in other places.

Amazon Wine, launched in 2012, offers wineries and other wine brands opportunities to sell to customers through Amazon.com. Wine will continue to be offered through Amazon Fresh, Prime Now and Whole Foods Markets,Amazon wrote in a note to wine sellers.

Amazon notified wine sellers on Monday that the company would shut down its Amazon Wine business at the end of this year.
