The Pennslyvania Liquor Control Board controls most of the wine trade in the state. Most of the stores are outright terrible. Some are OK, and a few are really awesome. However, even the best ones are completely unlike wine stores in any other state. Most of the wines are still overpriced and boring.

There is also a movement for small private wine shops. You wont see too many, and most have an abysmal selection of wines. There is a reason for this: the laws that allow free wine markets in Pennslyvania are onerous and lay high costs onto the shop owner.

Where Is 19 Crimes

19 Crimes is an Australian wine brand that was established in 2012 by Treasury Wine Estates.

The winery’s main focus are red blends made from grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Durif and Mourvèdre.

The winery chose its name 19 Crimes because in the early 18th century the British Government began transporting over 162,000 British criminals to live in Australia. This wine celebrates the 19 different laws those criminals broke because their rebellion helped create a new culture and new country.

Though we cant promise that you can roll into any state store and find natural wine, there are a few that are known for offering at least a few. Theyre not often labeled as such, and are mixed in with the conventional selection, so we suggest bringing a phone along so you can search for more info about any bottles that happen to catch your eye.

Perhaps the best-known Fine Wine & Good Spirits shop for natural wine is the location at 12th & Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia. Last year when we went on a shopping trip there with Chloe Grigri of The Good King Tavern and Le Caveau , she was able to point out a number of interesting natural wines from the shelves without much digging. It is a sort of-secret in the local wine community that the wine buyer Max Gottesfeld knows the shops more esoteric offerings inside and and out and is always ready to give recommendations.

You Now Can Purchase Wine At A Pennsylvania Grocery Store

The Giant Eagle Market District in Robinson becomes the first store in the state to offer direct-to-consumer wine sales.

Get your shopping cart rolling: Consumers now can legally purchase wine at grocery stores in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Today, Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle became the first grocer in the state to take advantage of the changes enacted by the sweeping liquor-reform measure Act 39, which was signed by Gov. Tom Wolf in early June.

I bet Im not the only one here who thought this day would never come. This is a historic moment, and Im absolutely delighted to be part of it, said Giant Eagle CEO Laura Karet at a press conference this morning at the Market District in Robinson Twp.

That store is first location in the state that isnt a state-run Fine Wines and Good Spirits store to offer general-purchase wine sales. It currently is the only branch of the chain to do so, though that is expected to change over the next few weeks.

Weve been talking about moving Pennsylvania into the 21st century with respect to the sale of wine and spirits, and this is a significant move toward a private sector model here in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with the sale of wine at Giant Eagle, said House Speaker Mike Turzai at the press conference.

The selection at the Robinson store currently is fairly limited, with 67 unique wine labels, tilting almost entirely toward budget-conscious, mass-market brands.

How To Get Alcohol Beer & Wine Delivered In Pittsburgh

Instead of PA Wine and Spirits home delivery, try these options.

Confused about how to order alcohol in light of recent shutdowns? Us too.

The state of PA has been in flux since the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board closed all liquor stores in the state on March 17.

In lieu of in-person sales, state residents now have the option to purchase a restricted quantity of wine and spirits from a reduced catalogue on the Fine Wine and Good Spirits website, and have the option of getting PA wine and spirits home delivery.

But the story doesnt end there. As many residents have noted, the website is tricky and unreliable. There is a narrow window to make purchases before the site gets overloaded and displays a message that says, Due to overwhelming demand, the online store is not available at this time. Please try again tomorrow or in the coming days.

So, what are PA residents doing? Short of driving for the border, theyre shopping local! There is no better time to support local businesses! Distillers, beer distributors, and wine shops are able to continue operations, albeit without dine-in services.

Many have curbside pickup hours, delivery, and/or ship throughout Pennsylvania. Below are details on what a few Pittsburgh favorites are offering for PA wine and spirits home delivery and pickup options.

Drinking Pa: Where To Find Natural Wine In Pennsylvania

There has never been a better time to find interesting wines in Pennsylvania! Natural wine, sometimes called real wine or low-intervention wine, is to mass-produced wine what artisan cheese is to pre-wrapped, neon-orange cheese slices. These natural wines are agricultural products made by small families and independent producers, who treat their land, soil and vines with respect and care, and who refuse to add a bunch of synthetic or intrusive ingredients to manipulate or stabilize their wines. Do you know how much stuff can make its way into wine besides grapes and yeast? Sugars, dyes, stabilizers, animal products, and so many other things can be added that dont legally have to be listed on the label.

There isnt one standard or legal definition for what natural wine is, but it is generally agreed that it refers to wines that are made with grapes and the native, wild yeasts on their skins and stems and in the air. The land is often farmed without artificial irrigation , the grapes are picked by hand, and the wines are unfined and unfiltered, with little-to-no added sulfites . Altogether, its a lo-fi way of making wine, one that calls on ancestral methods more than industrial technology, and, from our experiences, natural wines provide vibrant, vivid, sometimes wild flavors that make each glass an adventure.
