Lambrusco Vs Cabernet Sauvignon

Explore Lambrusco, the amazing Italian sparkling red wine you may be missing out on

Cabernet Sauvignon is a precious and refined wine, which was born from the spontaneous intersection between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It is mainly produced in Bordeaux, above all in Mèdoc and Graves.

It has a full and captivating flavour, with scents of licorice and spices. To the sense of smell it remembers the fragrances of undergrowth: blueberries, currants, blackberries and Alpine herbs.

It is a red tannic and fortified wine, with a sumptuous and harmonious flavour, but not delicate or faint. Furthermore it is perfect for great occasions, above all in combination with meat, ideal for barbecues of meat, foods based on truffle or first courses, which are fat and rich of flavours, but it doesnt combine well with fish or salads.

Lambrusco Vs Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir comes into the world from vines with black berries and it is one of the most refined and difficult wines all over the world.

The corner-stone of its production is Burgundy , where weather conditions and quality of soil let the proliferation of this kind of vine.

The name Pinot derives from the typical size of the bunch of this grapes, which is compact and closed and remembers a pine-cone. The grape has a thin peel, a modest ability of colouring, a rather low content of tannins and a rather marked sourness.

Pinot Noir is characterised by a clear sourness, strongly determined by its level of maturing and by its place where it was cultivated. However, because of its reduced content in tannins, the flavour remains balanced.

Wines, which are produced with cultivated grapes in areas where the climate is rather cold, are characterised by scents that can remember herbaceous and vegetal substances, such as mint, leave of tomato and dill. The fruity nature of grapes remains evident, also with scents of fruits such as cherry, raspberry, strawberry and blackberry. In the wines, which are produced in the areas where the climate is hot, the scents of fruit are very prominent. In some cases it is possible to perceive also egriot, blackberry and plums, so as floral scents such as rose and violet.

Otello Ceci owned a beloved trattoria in Parma, Italy. There he served regional favorites including Parmesan-Reggiano and Prosciutto di Parma. But it was his wine that stole the show.

Honor tradition but never become bound by it. Be fiercely passionate and equally generous. Value creativity, originality and fresh perspective and above all, never, ever stop innovating. Our great grandfather Otello lived by these principles.

80 years later, we, the third generation of the Ceci family, remain committed to his legacy of authenticity, quality and innovation. We knew this was our calling from a young age.

No one ever had to tell us. We are inspired by Otello’s tenacity. We strive daily to be better. To do things differently. To do Red Differently.

One Name Many Grape Varieties

Lambrusco is not a single grape variety, but an umbrella name for as many as 15 different red grapes that are not clones or mutations but different varieties with broadly similar characteristics. They originated in the Italian province of Emilia Romagna, and like many Italian grapes they are high in acid and tannin. They became popular because they yield heavily producing almost three times more fruit per vine than most varieties. It requires significant work in the vineyard to reduce yields and produce superior grapes. The most high-quality Lambrusco varieties are Salumino, Grasparossa and Sorbara. These will be discussed in more detail below. Lambrusco Maestri, Marani and Montericco are also widely planted, but these tend to produce lower quality fruit and go into making some of the larger commercial versions of Lambrusco wine.

Places where Lambrusco varieties grow best have had DOCs created, named after the quality Lambrusco varieties and centered on a particular town or area. Lambrusco Salumino di Santa Croce, Lambrusco di Sorbara and Lambrusco Grasparosso di Castelvetro display the best characteristics of their varietal. Other appellations for Lambrusco include Lambrusco di Modena and Lambrusco di Reggiano, and these appellations can use any of the various Lambrusco varieties.

Lambrusco The Misunderstood Red Sparkling

One of my favorite memories of drinking Lambrusco happened many years ago during Vinitaly. After a busy morning of tasting Brunellos and Proseccos, we left the show early and headed for lunch on a sunny patio in Veronas centro storico. As plates of culatello and bottles of chilled, frothy Lambrusco kept flowing, I thought to myself can it get any better? Needless to say, I was hooked on this refreshing, earthy sparkling wine.

This article will explain what Lambrusco is, what you should look for when buying Lambrusco and why it is so sadly misunderstood.

Lambrusco: A Great Wine That Should Always Be In Your Wine Rack

Lambrusco is an Italian wine, usually sparkling. Traditionally red, it is now also available in white and rosé. The term Lambrusco indicates a series of black grapes and the wine produced with them. Lambrusco grapes are mainly cultivated in the broad Emilia plain and in the southern part of Lombardy, between the Po and the city of Modena. Lambrusco is one of the most sold wine in Italy and exported worldwide: in 2016, 400 million bottles were produced.

There are several types of Lambrusco wine, with different degrees of sweetness, and different types of effervescence. Lambrusco is either frizzante or spumante can be dry , or sweet . Both the frizzante and spumante versions can also be rosés.

Grape variety

Lambrusco is made from a family of grape varieties. This family includes no less than sixty varieties, the 3 main ones are Salamino, Grasparossa, and Sorbara.

The Lambrusco grapes obtained from the Salamino bunches are distinguished by their intense ruby red colour, with a purple reflective foam.

Grasparossa is the grape variety that gives the most structured Lambrusco, with the body, very intense colour, purple and dense foam.

Sorbara is the lightest in colour of them as the grapes tend to have relatively thin skins with very little pigment. It is also considered as the highest quality variety.

Production method

The appellations

The following are the appellations of Lambrusco in order of annual production capacity.

What can we open it with?

Why should you give it a try?

What Is Lambrusco Wine

Lambrusco is almost exclusively produced in Italy. While the rest of the world is slow to forgive the sparkling red wines past reputation, the Italians are still big fans. Its not unusual to see locals sipping on this bubbly red throughout northern Italy.

However, due to the wine boom of the 1970s, Lambrusco cant seem to shake its reputation as a cheap, sickly drink outside of Italy. Were here to tell you that Lambrusco is definitely worth another try.

Lambrusco is a red sparkling wine with a color that varies with the style. While some are a deep purply red, others are as light as rosé.

There are over 60 related varieties of the Lambrusco grape, all native to Italy. The six most common are:

  • Lambrusco Grasparossa
  • Lambrusco Salamino
  • Lambrusco di Sorbara

Lambrusco wine is a mix of several of the grape varieties, as each has a specific flavor profile.

Similar to other Italian sparkling wines Lambrusco has high levels of acidity, and low to medium alcohol levels at around 10-11.5% ABV. And because Lambrusco is made with the red grape skins kept intact, it has higher levels of tannins.

Six Of Our Favorite Lambruscos To Drink Right Now

Good Lambruscos are almost always going to be in the $20 to $30 range, Keith Beavers, wine professional and VinePair columnist, says as I set up a Lambrusco blind tasting.

Hes right. Our panel immediately pans three cloying, $11-ish bottles in rapid succession.

Beavers wisdom goes against persistent misconceptions about Lambrusco, the sparkling red wine from Emilia Romagna, Italy. Many Americans associate Lambrusco with inexpensive, teeth-achingly sweet juice made famous by the brand Riunite in the 1970s and 1980s. Riunite Lambrusco currently retails from $7.50.

The story of how Lambrusco earned sneers is an old one and hardly bears repeating, Eric Asimov writes in The New York Times, except that many people are still stuck on the notion that Lambrusco is sweet, fizzy, and mildly alcoholic.

In reality, the category contains multitudes. More than 60 types of grapes from villages in Emilia Romagna can be used to make Lambrusco. In certain areas, winemakers are eschewing the Charmat method used for sweet and bulk wine, and re-embracing traditional, in-bottle fermentation. Lambruscos can be dry and acidic, like those grown in the sandy soils of Sorbara or dark-hued and deeply tannic, owing to a late harvest and clay terrain.

Such distinctions have existed for millennia. Now, more nuanced Lambruscos are available stateside and worldwide. We tasted several bottles to determine these stalwart picks. Here are six of the best Lambruscos available in the U.S. now.
