Grandfather Vineyard And Winery

With over five acres of grapevines, the Grandfather Vineyard and Winery is the first producing winery In Watauga county. This charming vineyard overlooks the iconic Grandfather Mountain and grows roughly 12 varieties of grapes. Because of the higher elevation, these fruits produce wines with bold flavors. Visitors can enjoy a number of events on site throughout the year that include live music and different food trucks.

Grandaddy Mimm’s Moonshine Distillery

Jack “Mimm” McClure was a moonshiner and philanthropist in the North Georgia Mountains. Our authentic moonshine is crafted from his 1930’s recipe, which is distilled and bottled on site at the distillery. Owner Tommy Townsend is Jack’s grandson and is also the lead singer with Waymore’s Outlaws, Waylon Jennings’ band. We invite you to come in, sample the best moonshine you’ve ever tasted, take a tour and meet Tommy. You can choose from several flavors, all made with natural ingredients.

Mabry Mill In The Fall

A point of interest that should be on your list is Mabry Mill, one of the most photographed sites on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Youll find the Mill, restaurant, and historic interpretations at milepost 176.

Next, venture north to Chateau Morrisette, one of Virginias oldest and most well-known wineries. Meet the dogs and then take a few home. You know, the award-winning wines known as The Black Dog red blend, Our Dog Blue Riesling blend, and Frosty Dog ice wine? Theyre each crowd favorites and have amassed dozens of medals between them. If you skipped dining at Mabry Mill, the restaurant at Chateau Morrisette is definitely in order. The menu is fresh and local, and the atmosphere is rustically elegant. On to Rocky Knob! At milepost 169 youll find the Rocky Knob Visitor Center and parking area. The Picnic Loop Trail is one mile long and does, indeed, include a picnic area as well as restrooms. Dont miss the two overlooks across the road for easy glances down and out. If its serious hiking youre looking for, consider the hike up to Rocky Knob itself, elevation 3,572 feet. Its a narrow hike up, but its not far from the parking area.
