I.W. Harper Bourbon History

IW Harper whiskey was first produced by the Bernheim Brothers Distillery back in the late 1870s. You may be familiar with the name Bernheim. Theres the Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, KY, where Heaven Hill currently produces its whiskeys, Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest and Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey, also produced by Heaven Hill. So who was this Bernheim?

Who was this I.W. Bernheim?

Well, Isaac Wolfe Bernheim was a German-Jewish immigrant who first arrived in the US back in 1867. He was not a distiller at the time. He eventually found work as a bookkeeper either for two distillers or a wholesale liquor company, depending on which source you believe. Eventually, after earning enough money, he brought his brother to the US and the two started a distillery of their own, called Bernheim Bros. They eventually started blending whiskey and released a brand of their own.

Whats with the I.W. Harper name?

So why is this brand called I.W. Harper and not I.W. Bernheim? Well, because of the social climate and prejudices at that time, the Bernheim Brothers felt that it was best to have an American sounding name. So I.W. Harper was born.

What Is The Wine Region Of Lodi Famous For

The region of Lodi is famous for its powerful Cabernet Sauvignon.

This tight-knit wine region is nestled between San Francisco Bay and the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is considered to be the next up-and-coming region of the States, as several innovative winemaking techniques and wines are emerging here.

The regions real focus is the ability to produce cost-effective wines, with 80% of the vines being Cabernet Sauvignon. However, the region also produces interesting expressions of Chardonnay, Viognier, Albariño, Zinfandel and Grenache.

For Lodi to produce grapes with such success, they are reliant on the warm summers and the cooling effect that the Delta offers their vineyards. This key combination of warm sun and a cooling breeze, ensures perfect ripening of their grapes, without losing any refreshing acidity.

    Taste Testing All Apothic Wines

Kentucky- Finished in Cabernet Sauvignon Casks and then aged for a second time in luxury Cabernet casks. The result is a wonderfully complex bourbon with flavorful bursts of toasted vanilla, ripe fruit and spice, for an exceptionally clean, lingering, smooth finish and a rich character.

    2 oz.

Muddle sugar and 1 orange peel in glass. Add bitters and bourbon. Stir well. Add ice cubes and stir again. Garnish with fresh orange peel.

Bourbon, Americas native spirit, traces its heritage to immigrants who brought their whiskey-making skills to the American colonies in the 18th century. Rye was the crop of choice for them, because it was easier to establish than the traditional barley. But when settlers pushed west to Kentucky, which had gained a reputation for fertile soil and pure spring waters, corn became the base material for their whiskey, and it established a style that Kentucky could call its own.

Although its historically affiliated with Kentucky, Bourbon today may be made anywhere in the United States, so long as producers follow a recipe and process that is set by law.

Review: Richmond Hill Takes Us On Melancholy Colorful Road Trip

Leaving Iowa features Don Faust, left, Leslie Day, Pam Kobre, and Kevin Babbitt.

The new show at Richmond Hill in Geneseo the family-friendly comedy Leaving Iowa is definitely a mixed bag, in good and not so good ways.

The nostalgic memory play by Tim Clue and Spike Manton is set both in the present day and in whiplash-inducing flashbacks the summer of a 1984 during a family vacation from Winterset, Iowa to Hannibal, Mo.

Leaving Iowa focuses on the road trip with the parents and their two kids, and is narrated by the only named character, Don Browning , and he, his sister and mom are played by the same actors in their then-and-now versions. Don is on his own modern-day journey to take his fathers ashes to his childhood home, as well as a way to breach the chasm between himself and Dad.

The kaleidoscopic, affectionate play is billed as a toast to the idealism and character of parents from the greatest generation, and a frantic roast of their dedication to the family road trip. It was nominated Best New Play in the Country by the Detroit Free Press and one of SoCal Theaters 10 Most Memorable Moments of the year after its run at the Laguna Playhouse.

A show suitable for ages 10 to 100, Leaving Iowa is a postcard to anyone who has ever found themselves driving alone on a road, revisiting fond memories of their youth.

Apothic Cabernet Sauvignon For Lovers Of Sweeter Reds

Apothic Cabernet Sauvignon is an extension of the Apothic range by E& J Gallo, the worlds largest family-owned wine company. The Apothic wines are loved for their sweeter style, bold red wines. In saying that, there is a rose and a white wine in the range as well. The packaging is as stylish as the wine is bold and the entire brand is very well crafted.

True to its name, the Apothic brand it is certainly creating a stir. Quite literally with Brew which is a red wine infused with cold brew coffee. They even have taken a leaf from the Scotch and Sherry houses and reversed it for the Apothic Inferno. The Inferno is matured in toasted whiskey barrels. I note the spelling of whiskey and assume it is Bourbon not Scotch.

    Apothic Cabernet Sauvignon

Apothic Cabernet Sauvignon has an abundance of oak on show. Indeed, the wine really is as it says on the bottle, smooth. In this case, the oak shines through as caramel corn and vanilla notes against the confectionery blackcurrant jam Californian Cabernet characters. The Apothic Cab is undoubtedly very ripe and there is a little mint and a whole lot of chocolate and raisin on the front palate. This ripeness becomes more evident when you consider that it sits at 13.5%. As a consequence, there is a large dollop of residual sugar left from a shortened the ferment.

Best Washington: Woodward Canyon Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon

    courtesy of woodwardcanyon.com

Region: Washington | ABV: 14.5% | Tasting Notes: Black cherry, Menthol, Baking spices

Washington State might seem like an odd place to cultivate a big, rich, warmth-loving red grape like cabernetafter all, isnt Seattle rainy about ten months out of the year? Maybe so, but once you get east of the Cascade mountain range, the climate is considerably drier and sunnier, yielding one of the nations premier growing regions for hearty reds.

Only the second winery to be established in Washingtons prolific Walla Walla Valley, family-run Woodward Canyon has been churning out delicious reds since 1981, and their Artist Series cabernet is a blend of grapes sourced from some of the most highly regarded vineyards in the entire state, including the lengendary Sagemoor Vineyard. The result is a silky, medium- to full-bodied wine bursting with notes of ripe black cherry, blueberry, cassis, warm baking spices, cedar, black pepper, menthol, and cocoa, says Claire Coppi, a Certified Sommelier and a cast member on SOMM TV. Wait about five years before opening, as the wine benefits highly from a little time to integrate in the bottle.

My Overall Opinion Of Apothic Cab

Overall, I found this wine to be very enjoyable. It may even be my favorite Apothic wine so far.

I can see that Apothic went for a more refined red with Apothic Cab and I can appreciate that.

Its difficult to find the official varietal compositions for Apothic wines, but I can tell this is definitely not a straight Cabernet Sauvignon.

Its more of a twist on Cabernet Sauvignon, as they go on to say on the bottle label.

Most likely its a blend thats primarily Cab. Perhaps 80%. But I would guess also Merlot, Zinfandel, and/or Syrah.

Its just too jammy to be a straight Cab.

What it is though, is a smooth sipper that I believe will appeal to many. Especially given the just under $10.00 price tag.

Apothic Cab Cabernet Sauvignon price $9.99.

Best Under $: 2016 Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Region: Alexander Valley, California | ABV: 13.9% | Tasting Notes: Toasty oak, Cassis, Wild herbs

For almost five decades, the Duncan family has shepherded Silver Oak Cellars on a continued path of perfection. Their Alexander Valley property is worth a visit to California alone, just to experience their LEED Certified Platinum winery and, of course, to taste their Alexander Valley Cabernet.

Classic Silver Oak layers of deeply delicious toasty oak notes are harnessed with vanilla, blackberry, cassis and violets, further revealing black currant and wild herb notes over time in the glass. Expect bold tannins, bold flavors and mind-boggling complexity.

Region: Mendocino County, California | ABV: 14% | Tasting Notes: Plum, Spice, Vanilla

Bonterras reputation in the beverage trade can be distilled into two major points: first, theyre committed to producing quality wines, and second, they were organic before it was cool. Yes, even as far back as 1987, Bonterra has made their wines without using pesticides. The extra effort is evident in their 2018 cabernet, an inspired feat from the originators of organic vino.

Expect flavors of cherry, plum, and spice with pretty oak notes tinged with vanilla. The wine has a hearty structure with soft acidity and a fresh finish.
