First conceived in 1944 in the vineyards of Portugal, Lancers was originally packaged in highly identifiable, authentic clay pot bottles. The wine first gained popularity amongst American troops returning home from World War II. Eager to celebrate, the soldiers were quick to embrace the wines crisp, refreshing style. Lancers remains one of the best recognized imported wines in the United States and, for many Americans, recalls fond memories of their introduction to the world of wine.
Lancers new packaging is a modern take on the classic concept, featuring environmentally friendly glass bottles with a plastic sleeve that offers protection from sunlight, helping to preserve the wines fresh, fruity character. When they came to take away his wine, he told me he felt liberated, not mournful, and called the arrival of the trucks a little bit of a relief. I didnt believe him. In the quarter-century hes been my friend, Ive always thought of him as The Collector, in capital letters. And here he was saying, apparently in earnest, I drank all the great wines in the world and Ill drink more. I have absolutely no remorse.
The crew from Zachys Wine Auctions, a division of a retail store in Scarsdale, New York, came to his home a few months ago and carried off about 9,000 bottles, 90 percent of his collection. The workmen, essentially household movers with the bodies of stevedores and the souls of epicures, lugged them up a flight of steep, unsteady, wooden steps that serve as the only entrance to my friends faultless natural wine cellar, once a root cellar under a shepherds cottage, circa 1910. The bottles had aged for decades in pastoral perfectiona cramped, dark, dank, and creepy space, everything fine wines adore. Much about food and drink is labeled artisanal, usually without justification, but if there is such a thing as an artisanal wine cellar, this was it.
The Collector skillfully bid, bargained, and usually outmaneuvered competitors who were after the same auction lots, the same unopened wooden crates, the same rare bottles from 1945 or 1959. He had been a rugby player well into his middle years, and he knew how to compete.

There is so much more to rosé than simply its colour. There is much to tell about this subject, but I want you to have a certain picture in mind when you buy your next bottle of rosé. But first, a little history. The birthplace of rosé is Provence, a tiny province in the South-East of France. Despite rosé being known as a French wine, it was the Greeks who planted the first grapevines there. Rosé wines arent all made from one variety of grape, although theyre mostly made from Grenache and Cinsaut. The regions of Languedoc-Roussillon and Southern Rhône have a diversity of rosé wines, and even have areas dedicated to the wine.
I can confidently tell you that the French love rosé: one in every three bottles of wines consumed in France today is a rosé. In fact, in 2016, Provence produced some 156 million bottles of AOC rosé wines!
Despite the French having initially mastered the art of rosé production, today, rosé wine production is global. Countries like Austria, Hungary, Moldavia, Switzerland, Romania and South Africa feature in the World Rosé Statistics as the main producers, having increased their production by 50% over the last 10 years . And dont forget California, with its craze for blush in the 80s Portugals Mateus and Lancers with their long histories, and Italy and Spain which make various rosé wines from many different grape varieties.
